Beautiful park on Viking Lake. Quiet, clean, camp host very helpful. Why only average rairing.. .very unlevel lots. - Long01

Great park to visit. Great amenities in the campground. Water in the showers was cold late in the evening one night but then very hot in the mornings. The grass was 6 inches tall and needed to be mowed. Having two dump stations was a big plus when people lined up to get out on Sunday. Great fire pits and picnic table at each camping spot. We will come back here someday. - Candbs

Viking Lake is located in a 1,000 acre park in SW Iowa and is one of the most popular state parks. VLSP was surrounded by forest, had well maintained grounds, a playground and two modern, clean restroom/shower buildings. Showers are the 'push-button' type with no water temp control, but the hot water temperature and pressure were OK. Cellphone reception wasn't the best; may depend upon your provider. There is a 5.5 mile multi-use trail around the lake and a 1-mile Burr Oak Nature Trail. There's a sandy beach (unsupervised) located on the west shore, 4 boat ramps, 6 fishing jetties and Deb’s Lake View restaurant which was (seasonally) open for breakfast, lunch and dinner but serves no alcohol. The same building also housed a boat concession selling bait, ice, firewood, fishing gear, rents motor boats, paddle boats and pontoons. The roadways are paved but the sites are gravel. The newer 'upper' campground area appeared to have the most level level sites; some with views of the lower campground below by the water. The lower 'lakeside' campground sites near the lake were closer together, more crowded and mostly occupied full-time. The lesser crowded 'West' campground near the tent area had more room between sites. The campground has nonelectric, electric, full hook-up, and buddy campsites and two dump stations. Our electric-only site cost $16. Note - pick your site cautiously; we discovered our advance-reserve site (#25) was the most un-level we've ever come across. We had our front auto-levelers maxed out with 4 boards underneath plus about a foot of boards under our front tires and were barely level. Saw many other motorhomes and 5th-wheelers with what looked like a small forest of lumber under their rigs too. - OTR-again

We camped here with our vintage Airstream for a rally with 13 other Airstreams. The roads into the park are plenty wide and directions were good. The campground had adequate spacing between sites, not generous, but sufficient. The sites were mostly gravel and grass. Leveling was good, just a little adjustment but nothing drastic. Nice paved roads for walking down to the lake that had a couple docks for boats and a fish cleaning station. The sites were shady and kept clean, in fact the whole campground was very clean and well maintained. The shower house was very clean and in some state parks keeping them clean doesn't seem to be a priority but they kept these shower/toilets clean and maintained. Water pressure was good, though you do have to push the button every couple minutes, but no big deal. We stayed here four nights and would stay again. The park is in the southwest corner of Iowa, not far from Missouri. We visited the surrounding towns which had special activites the weekend we were there. Clarinda had a 1940's festival with Big Band music; great steak house there. - JonesAussies

Very clean big state park. Water is available in each section but not at the site. The water was on when we stayed. The sites are gravel and mostly level. Our site had 50amp but not sure if all do. We were the only campers there for 2 days and it is a big park. We could not get our WiFi to work and there were only 4 PBS channels on the antenna. The Verizon phones worked well. A very nice park and would stay again even though TV and internet wasn't available. - Fulltime 5er

Great little State Park. Swimming beach. Disc golf. Hiking. Restrooms newer and clean. The non-electric sites, with a few exceptions, are very much "tent only" though save maybe for a fold up tent camper. - User988
