Stayed here one night. The sight was not very level and it was pretty tight for our 28’ fiver. They had reliable 50amp service but the water was available across the drive through a garden hose. I had plenty in my fresh water tank and didn’t want to try the water. It was a small campground with about 12 spots.the staff/owner was very nice. No sewer. They had a dump station but no water to rinse out hoses. It was pretty close to the interstate and you could hear traffic throughout the night. I would not stay here again. - Planterman

The staff was very friendly. The grounds were clean. The site was gravel with grass side yard. However, the gravel on roads and the campsite was similar to limestone in that there was a powdery, gritty residue that tracked into the RV, stuck to shoes, etc. We were on day 6 traveling with 3 large dogs and had kept the camper clean until this stop with this powdery gravel. Additionally, upon check-in a staff member said the power company warned them that power was fluctuating and everyone was advised to not plug in. Staff said they'd notify when safe to plug in but no one came around to advise about safety. So it was basically dry camping for $56.00 - no consideration for the lack of power. I didn't give a 1 because the grounds were well kept, staff was pleasant at check-in, and it was quiet (except for having to run generators) but I don't think we'll return to this campground. - KateG

Great KOA facility. Wide gravel roads and level sites. Great customer service with well stocked store with great pizza that they will deliver to your site. Large green space between sites with plenty of room for your RV and tow vehicle. Nice clean restroom. - Funengineer
Aug 2019 - $57.00
We just completed an 11-day stay at Des Moines West KOA, doing numerous friend and family visits plus a bit of sightseeing of the Des Moines and Central Iowa areas. This KOA has fairly level sites, including a few side-by-side sites. Nearly all sites are pull-throughs. A few sites have an upgrade to a concrete patio with ourdoor furniture and gas grill. There are 10-12 cabins for rent as well as a couple of yurts. This park is well equipped to serve families: pool, play equipment, basketball and jumping play areas, fishing pond, activities on summer weekends. We have stayed here 5 times in 3 years. - gbburgess

This little park was a pleasant surprise. We were traveling cross country, but decided to take an extra rest day here. It is several miles off I-80, but worth the trip. The last mile is down a well-maintained gravel road. There is a nearby lake and room to roam. It is extremely peaceful and a great respite from the usual "campgrounds" you find along the interstates. - Camping Granny
Aug 2016 - $21.00
I loved this place! The owner was super cool, it was exactly what we were looking for...zacardias, lightening bugs, full moon, friendly peeps, and quiet, lovely and Awesome!! - Deb Kytle
Jul 2008 - $16.00
Way off the interstate, poorly marked, no one at the check in station. Note on drop box not to use because someone is stealing the money! We were dead tired, got set up and ready for bed, when there was a knock on the door and the attendant wanted their money. Luckily we stayed only one night (well 4 hours). Would not stay here again. - BIGBUBBA1959

My husband and I have stayed at Island Park several times. Each time the park gets a little cleaner and the overall park better tended. The Camp Manager has his hands full. This park has been under poor management for years. To may late night parties, loud campers and poor behavior. Under new management, the restoom/showers are a little cleaner, the grounds are mowed and well maintained and the overall experience is SO much better. There is no internet connection. There IS a dump station in the park. The river surrounds the park so rainy season can be difficult. As a kayak-er, I LOVE the ease of access to the river. We will return for sure! - JenniG
Aug 2013 - $15.00
This is a nice little public park for an overnight stay. It is very quiet. You register at a box as you drive in (must pay within an hour of arrival) once you pick your site. There is no dump station. - luckydog

Beautiful county park, our campsite was on a raised gravel bed with a big fire ring and nice picnic table. Was also beautifully shaded and near a clear rushing River. Electric only, we were in a motorhome. - Hamilhome
Sep 2015 - $15.00
Spacious, wooded county park 35 miles W of Des Moines and 6 miles N of Stuart (I-80 exit 93). Gravel roads and pads, back in sites looked like 30 feet or so. Next to the Raccoon River, with canoeing access advertised (River looked pretty fast to me). Also walking trails. Very peaceful and pretty. - Creigh Gordon

A good place to stay with full hookup sites. The site was fairly level and was able to level up with no difficulty. The hookups were adequate and there is a Verizon tower on the grounds. A great place to camp when the other campgrounds in Winterset are full. There is a sign stating that the campground is closed July 6-20 for the county fair. That date would vary some year to year. We definitely would stay here again. - Kent and Margaret

This is a very nice city park. Most sites are back-in but several are pull-through as well. Six additional sites are being prepared. This is a self check-in Park. Pick your site then complete the paper work. Walking and hiking is close by. - Hobbes

Small but very nice park. FHU and W/E sites available. Mostly back-in sites. Gravel road and sites. Picnic table, fire ring. No cable and limited OTA. Shared water spigot with your neighbor. Beautiful city park is adjacent with play areas, Clark Tower and a covered bridge. - travelswithpuppies

Very nice park. Quiet, clean. Cool bridge as you enter. Winterset is a nice little town. - Jules RV
May 2019 - $24.00
Nice little park near Winterset IA. Water and power hookups, but shared between sites, so we were lucky to have enough hose and extension to hookup. 2 Sections - one with lots of trees, one flat and open. On the tree section we were in, odd numbered sites were NOT very level - we could not get to level despite having front wheels in the air... Sites varied in length, mine could have taken a 45 footer, the one next to me would have been tight with 30... Great access to winterset, lots of county parks and the bridges of madison county.... 12"6' bridge and 90' corner at entry, manageable, but be careful :D. - piston9
Aug 2018 - $22.00
This location is 4 miles SW of Winterset in a nice park setting. There is a tunnel with a low ceiling, but our 10 1/2 footer fit fine. We pulled in and were greeted by the host and he pointed us in the right direction. The sites have a concrete pad on the back, so the tires can be on concrete if you like. We chose to stay in front so the stabilizers could be on concrete. They have electric, but it was quite a ways away. We needed an extension cord. They have water, but it too is quite a ways away and we needed an extra hose. Sewer dump is located on site and works well. No wi-fi here and the bathrooms/showers were a little rough. Nice park, just a bit rough and rural. - mlbpafan

Sep 2019 - $28.00
Extremely nice *new* owners that are adding on and upgrading the park. Saw 60 or so new pull thru sites going in that look nice. Older park that was not laid out to accommodate the larger rigs of today. We were in a 40 ft motorhome and we were able to get around, just had to be careful. Was there at end of season so it was not crowded. Interested to see how upgrades look. - DRNiven
Aug 2019 - $45.00
Our site #22 was probably nicest in the park except not FHU. Most sites are very narrow with very tight turns. While we were a side by side and very close on hookup side our other side had a wide gravel patio with nice picnic table and fire pit in step down large grassy fenced area with a good view. Would not stay here in any other site. Dump station was awkward to get to and line up with because it is on a corner. Inner roads are a crushed gravel and had a lot of wash out ruts from several days of rain. They did try to get them level but not very successful. People in office were very helpful and friendly. - We Two III
Aug 2019 - $42.00
A little pricey. We were traveling and called ahead. All the good sites were full. They did find us a spot with no sewer. We were really close to our neighbor. We do appreciate them finding us a spot on such short notice. We stayed for two nights. Wifi worked some of the time. There was a gun range nearby and you could hear the gunshots. This was only a minor distraction. - Jerry Crum

May 2019 - $14.00
This is a great little state park in an area that is short on places to camp in an RV. There are about 24 sites total, all back in. About 1/3 of these are full hook-up, and the rest electric only. There are a half dozen electric only sites that are first come first served. The rest must be reserved at least 2 days in advance, and can only be reserved online. The sites are only 30 feet long, and the interior roads have some tight corners, so this is not the place for large rigs. Walnut Woods is very near the river, so if it has been raining excessively, you will see some water. After a whole night of rain, we awoke to some flooding. One or two of the concrete pads were half covered with water, but ours was not. The campground is well maintained and the "park ranger" in charge is very helpful and friendly. - BounderPounder
Nov 2018 - $11.00
Our site was very difficult to back into. Not enough room for our 21' travel trailer & tow vehicle. We had to park our truck in the grass. Electric only. Rate was $11 All facilities were closed for the season, but there was a porta-potty. No water to be found anywhere. Lots of room to walk a dog. While the website showed many sites available, there were reserved tags on all but 3. Decent stop for 1 night. - CJVJn1Doug
Nov 2018 - $11.00
Quiet. Very pretty wooded area.
Concrete pads. Electricity provided. No water or dump station available at this time of year. - terrymsawchuk
