This is an impressive COE complex with lots to offer but they need better signage. We made our reservation on recreation.gov and received an email confirmation with our site number but no specifics on check in procedure. It turns out you need to check in at "The Shack" in West Overlook Campground. We appreciated our paved level full hook up pull-through site in Tailwater West and the recycling. We camped at Tailwater West Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The Devonian Fossil Gorge is part of the complex. The Gorge was exposed during a flood in 1993. The fossils of this ancient coral reef are remarkable.

First my only complaint. Signage here is really lacking. It is very confusing on getting to your site and how to register. You need to find the West Overlook Entrance Station to register. But don't go there first. First you must find you site then go to the station. I did not see ANY signs explaining that procedure, except at the West Overlook Entrance Station. Going there first, with a large RV could be a mistake. Look for a map of this campground that you can print on www.recreation.gov. Where to register is mentioned on that map. But in VERY small print. The COE really needs better distribute this information. BTW, if you are using the America the Beautiful pass you need to bring that with you when you register. Otherwise you will be charged the full price for a campsite. No pass - no discount! We camped in the Tailwater West loop. Bring a water pressure regulator. The water pressure varied between 100 psi to 125 psi on the input side of my water pressure regulator. Sites in this loop are well maintained, concrete pads and grass mowed. The bath house in this loop was clean, but not up to the cleanliness of other COE campgrounds we have visited. Both Verizon cell and data were adequate, 5.09Mbps download and 2.51 Mbps upload. There are nice walking trails in the area. We camped at Tailwater West Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Great COE park below the dam on Lake Coralville. Full hookups and 50 amp electric in the area where we stayed, Tailwater West. Beautiful paths to walk on and explore. Don't miss the miles of nature walk off of Linder Point. Lots of people fishing, both campers and day use. Clearly a vibrant recreational area for the people near Coralville/Iowa City. An on site Marina with boat rentals, a nice beach area roped off above the dam, several boat ramps in the lake and on the river below the dam. Just a 5 minute drive into town with a full service mall, including a movie theater and an ice rink, and any restaurant or grocery store that you might need. We would recommend this site to any rv'er that we know. Easy to get to and would be convenient for even an overnight stay. Once in the park, it was slightly confusing how to get registered. You drive directly to your site, then, instructions state to check in to a certain location within an hour. We didn't know that going in. It would've been helpful. The Assistant Director of the park was a great guy and got us all straightened around. We camped at Tailwater West Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Several campgrounds to choose from. We stayed at Tail Water West, just below the dam. This area is the only one with full hookups. We happened in on a Sunday afternoon and was able to get a lot for overnight. I doubt that one could get in on weekends without a reservation. The lots were large, shaded and have huge concrete patios. We did not have wifi or cable but for an overnight stay it was perfect. We camped at Tailwater West Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Visitor Center host couple knew absolutely nothing about the campgrounds. Pay station, at the entrance to one campground, didn't open until 12noon and they were no help. Departure times for campers already on site is 5PM and we got there at 12NOON. We visited three campgrounds before finding vacant sites in Tailwater West, none with full hookups available. There are a total of 16 in the entire complex with full hookups. Dump station is in the midst of it all and easy to access. The sites in Tailwater West are paved, wide and lots of room for patio, all with fire rings. COE staff was helpful, rangers assisted finding us an open site. We were told Tailwater West would be very loud due to heavy traffic in and out of the fishing area but we didn't notice in T-10. Since Tailwater West is at the base of the dam, tucked into the canyon along the river, there is IFFY Wi-Fi, no cell phone and poor TV reception. A good place to relax and just kick back. In spite of all the confusion we would return when in the area. We camped at Tailwater West Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the nearby AMANA Colonies. Get the brochure for Devonian Fossil Gorge at the CG and do the walking tour of "A Window into Iowas's Geologic Past," near the entrance to Tailwest Campground.

Overall Rating:

Very nice COE park located just outside of Iowa City. We stayed in the Tailwater West area, which is at the foot of the dam. Park was very clean. Electric was steady, water was 80PSI. There are several full hook up sites, some with water and electric only. In other camping loops, there are some with electric only. Plenty of shade, good for fishing. There is a beach and boat launch in the complex, but not directly off of Tailwater West. There is a mix of day use and camping here which we didn't care for, its a bit disconcerting to come out of your camper and find someone fishing or picnicking just a few yards off the back of your site, but we still enjoyed the loop. There is a wonderful fossil gorge that the public is free to explore, the visitors center was very nice and volunteers were friendly and helpful. Plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby. There was a good staff presence here as well. We would stay here again. We camped at Tailwater West Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Eat at the Hamburg Inn and visit the Natural History Museum at the University of Iowa. Old style museum displays, geological, mammal and bird exhibits were very interesting.
