MCP's 140 acres contains a 7-acre fishing lake, a campground with 100 graveled sites, modern restroom facilities, individual shower rooms, picnic shelters and playground equipment. A basketball court, baseball and softball fields are also located in the park. The Marion County Historical Society maintains a historical village at the park. There is a campground host. About half the campsites are water & elec and the other half water, elec & sewer. Most pads are long, some are fairly level, others not so. Most campsites can be reserved online (see MCP's websites Facilities page for details). The park was quiet and not very busy mid-week.
Note: it gets busy for the Sprint Car races in Knoxville, especially during the Nationals in August. Easy drive into Knoxville for supplies, restaurants, brewery, etc. - OTR-again
May 2017 - $25.00
The best public park we have stayed in. Long, mostly level back in. Easy to back in for people like me who struggle to back in. Kudos to the camp host for keeping the bathrooms very clean. Shaded sites and plenty of room. Near town but quiet. Strongly recommend. - Teach123
May 2016 - $25.00
This is a great FSU county park. The pads are long and for the most part level. This may be the only county park in Iowa that gives a $2.00 discount for having an America the Beautiful card. - rving4fun
Jul 2016 - $25.00
Nothing has changed in a year. Still good for an overnight if you are going to Knoxville speedway. Clean and safe with hook ups. Lots of room if it is not Nationals week. - acadiandave
Jun 2015 - $40.00
A great park if you are going to Knoxville speedway or the Museum. It is within walking distance of the track, but it is a long walk. Spots are small and not level, but with water sewer and electric hook ups it is much better than being right at the track. Please note there are two campgrounds right beside each other and can be a little confusing. Just look for the Sprint car sign out front. - acadiandave

You can bring your horses with you to Elk Rock campground as there are trails, riding ring, mounting posts, a shower spot for your horses, horse poop dumping area with a wheelbarrow, places to keep your hay, and DNR is friendly! Everything for the horses is very clean and kept nice! The only downfall to this place, is there isn't hot water in the shower rooms most of the time, but it's still a decent temperature so you don't freeze to death hahaha. People out there are very friendly as well! I LOVED it and will be coming back again!
Highly recommended if you love horseback riding and camping! - LilLezBean
Jul 2017 - $18.00
Also an equestrian park. All facilities we saw were complete and well taken care of. New plantings everywhere. Newer restrooms and plentiful shower facilities. Also had firewood available for sale. - Linda and Jim
Apr 2016 - $11.00
We camped at this campground pretty early in the season. There were quite a few sites that remained open through the weekend. One disappointment was when making the reservation the visitor alert stated that the shower houses would be open the day of arrival. The day before departure the alert was changed to the following weekend. We were not dependent on using those facilities but if I was a tent camper or someone without a bathroom I would have been disappointed.
The playground at the electric campground needs to be updated. There is an additional playground in the equestrian campground area that was much nicer and offered more. There are pull-through sites available as well as back-in sites. There were also tent camping areas with grassy pads.
The park offers hiking/multi-use trails. It appears this campground caters more to the equestrian campers. They had very nice facilities and there were numerous day use equestrian visitors.
Staff was rarely seen throughout the weekend and no one ever checked in with us. I maybe saw them drive through one or twice throughout our stay. This may be different during peak seasons. There was a reduced rate for our stay-I am guessing because the facilities were not turned back on yet. The campground offers 30 and 50 amp electrical sites but no water or sewer sites. - Moon8211
Aug 2019 - $10.00
CG overlooked Red Rock reservoir. Site was nice and shaded but they are removing a number of Ash trees due to the Emerald ash borer. Towns of Knoxville and Pella are within 15 miles. The National Sprint Car races were going on at Knoxville so CG was close to full but very quiet considering the number of campers there. Most were gone during the day and early eve because of the races. Hiking, biking, fishing and boating are things you can do. CG is well maintained and very nice. - Jay Miller
Jul 2019 - $10.00
Beautiful location. Mature trees, and nice trimmed grass between sites. Literally hundreds of sites, but only certain ones have views of the lake. Gravel camp pad. 62 was level with a little adjustment. Bathrooms had lots of bugs but otherwise clean. Especially liked site 59-63 that have views of Red Rock Lake. - David A Wright
Aug 2015 - $18.00
Nice gravel sites. Paved roads. Lots of space between sites.lots of shade. Good tv reception. Nice boat launch. Lake Red Rock is the largest lake in Iowa. - Ric53
Sep 2017 - $16.00
Stayed here for Labor Day weekend the campground was full, beautiful trees and shade, you will need to clean everything that is left outside as it will be covered in sap from the trees. We had a great weekend overall, but the lots are a little small , we would highly recommend this park. - Candbs
May 2008 - $16.00
Be careful if coming from the North through town, our GPS wanted us to route us under a bridge less than 10 ft high. The RedBuds were in full bloom and beautiful. The fishing is apparently very good here and in the area. The campsites are quite close so it gets a 7 instead of a nine. - stetwood
May 2018 - $30.00
The campground was extremely clean and well maintained. The bathhouse was always stocked and taken care of. The showers were just like home ones. There is swimming, paddle boating, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding. They do family events as well with potlucks for the whole campground and dances. Our children have a blast here. The view is fantastic and the fellow campers have always been friendly. We stayed in the cabins and they were fabulous. Has all the amenities, very spacious, well kept. The owners go above and beyond to make sure your stay is great. We enjoyed our stay so much the first time that we are now frequent fliers to this campground. It has become our favorite. You can follow them on Facebook to see what's happening. - Spikec6
Aug 2018 - $22.00
An excellent place to stay. Seniors with national park pass get in for half price. This one of the best setup experiences I've ever had in 3 years of RVing; the site was dead level front to back and side to side. - Arby473
May 2018 - $11.00
We spent two nights at the Howell Station Recreation Area in May 2018 in our 39' fifth wheel. We really enjoy COE campgrounds and this was the best we've stayed at. The campground is absolutely gorgeous with many mature trees and lush grass. There is a large amount of space between sites. The Des Moines River runs along the campground and there are well-maintained walking trails beside it. The campground is quite big rig friendly. All the sites are back-ins but the road is fairly wide so backing in wasn't too difficult. Although all the sites have 50 amp electric, there is no water nor sewer connections at the sites due to the many trees. There are large dump stations by the entrance and drinking water is available there. We would definitely return to this campground if in the area. - Phil G
Aug 2017 - $10.00
This is an excellent campground. Sites are well spaced and quite large. Biking path is great and can be taken all the way into Pella. Campsites are well-maintained and easy to get into. It's an easy walk to the river and the boat launch is close by. We had good reception on phones (AT&T), MiFi (Verizon) and Dish TV. There are 4 dump stations with fresh water available. Hosts are friendly and helpful. - Bobbi1948
Sep 2017 - $9.00
Great waterfront site at a great rate. Easy walk to beautiful lake. Sites are good size. Antenna TV worked well. Some road noise due to construction at dam. Bathrooms and showers were fine, just a tad old, dark and somewhat dusty. I saw zero spiders but there were some cobwebs on the ceiling. We stayed 2 nights and at that price with that view, I'd stay again. - RvCandyP
Aug 2017 - $9.00
On entering the Park, we were greeted enthusiastically by volunteers and loaded up with materials about local events and other things we could use. Very nicely done! Rated bathrooms very low because of large amounts of cob webs at the ceilings and floors. Toilets were clean, but showers had lots of soap scum built up. Grounds were relatively clean, but did notice scraps of paper everywhere. Looks like papers and other refuse was just mowed over with no effort made to pick it up before mowing. - Linda and Jim
Jul 2017 - $9.00
Bits of litter about, roads are narrow but doable. Some sites need a bit of leveling. Some sites have lots of shade, all sites have shade at some time during the day. Helpful hosts and rangers. Had an electrical issue and they had an electrician at our site with 10 minutes, very impressed! Decent spacing, not as much as some COE campgrounds but enough that you didn't feel as you were intruding on your neighbor. We would definitely stay again if in the area. It was quiet and dark for good sleeping. - JonesAussies
Jun 2017 - $18.00
Volunteer check-in staff was very friendly, and helpful. Toilets and showers were very clean and well stocked. We did NOT like the lack of dumpsters for garbage, and that the sites were not very level and were mostly loose gravel. The COE rangers drove through a few times but hardly slowed down on their rounds. Flying insects were a problem for us as well. Most likely will not return to this particular campground. - Linda and Jim
Aug 2014 - $9.00
Great park; friendly staff; clean restrooms. Spacious sites. Close to Pella. Our loop (#34) had nice lake view. A good number of first come first serve sites. - Linda Johnson
Sep 2013 - $18.00
Well the campsite was nice, but the grass was brown. They have tent camping, but complain if you pitch one up. I got a slip on the tent "you're killing our grass please take down". If you're here to fish Lake Red Rock fair warning!! Bring your own bait because the closest shop is 20 miles away and if you ask the locals they have no clue. Its a real nice lake but no lake bait shop and the gas dock opens at 9am and closes at 2pm. So bring gas as it's 4.75 a gallon for 87 octane. The campground does not enforce the 10pm quiet time because at 2 am the campers were lighting off fire works. If you like college frat parties you will like this. Drunk boater camping here after a day on the water. All night long yelling and stumbling around the camp. We reported them every night, but no change. We will not come back because we talked to others and they say it's like this every weekend. - duramax man
