Sep 2017 - $9.00
Great waterfront site at a great rate. Easy walk to beautiful lake. Sites are good size. Antenna TV worked well. Some road noise due to construction at dam. Bathrooms and showers were fine, just a tad old, dark and somewhat dusty. I saw zero spiders but there were some cobwebs on the ceiling. We stayed 2 nights and at that price with that view, I'd stay again. - RvCandyP
Aug 2017 - $9.00
On entering the Park, we were greeted enthusiastically by volunteers and loaded up with materials about local events and other things we could use. Very nicely done! Rated bathrooms very low because of large amounts of cob webs at the ceilings and floors. Toilets were clean, but showers had lots of soap scum built up. Grounds were relatively clean, but did notice scraps of paper everywhere. Looks like papers and other refuse was just mowed over with no effort made to pick it up before mowing. - Linda and Jim
Jul 2017 - $9.00
Bits of litter about, roads are narrow but doable. Some sites need a bit of leveling. Some sites have lots of shade, all sites have shade at some time during the day. Helpful hosts and rangers. Had an electrical issue and they had an electrician at our site with 10 minutes, very impressed! Decent spacing, not as much as some COE campgrounds but enough that you didn't feel as you were intruding on your neighbor. We would definitely stay again if in the area. It was quiet and dark for good sleeping. - JonesAussies
Aug 2018 - $22.00
An excellent place to stay. Seniors with national park pass get in for half price. This one of the best setup experiences I've ever had in 3 years of RVing; the site was dead level front to back and side to side. - Arby473
May 2018 - $11.00
We spent two nights at the Howell Station Recreation Area in May 2018 in our 39' fifth wheel. We really enjoy COE campgrounds and this was the best we've stayed at. The campground is absolutely gorgeous with many mature trees and lush grass. There is a large amount of space between sites. The Des Moines River runs along the campground and there are well-maintained walking trails beside it. The campground is quite big rig friendly. All the sites are back-ins but the road is fairly wide so backing in wasn't too difficult. Although all the sites have 50 amp electric, there is no water nor sewer connections at the sites due to the many trees. There are large dump stations by the entrance and drinking water is available there. We would definitely return to this campground if in the area. - Phil G
Aug 2017 - $10.00
This is an excellent campground. Sites are well spaced and quite large. Biking path is great and can be taken all the way into Pella. Campsites are well-maintained and easy to get into. It's an easy walk to the river and the boat launch is close by. We had good reception on phones (AT&T), MiFi (Verizon) and Dish TV. There are 4 dump stations with fresh water available. Hosts are friendly and helpful. - Bobbi1948
Jun 2017 - $18.00
Volunteer check-in staff was very friendly, and helpful. Toilets and showers were very clean and well stocked. We did NOT like the lack of dumpsters for garbage, and that the sites were not very level and were mostly loose gravel. The COE rangers drove through a few times but hardly slowed down on their rounds. Flying insects were a problem for us as well. Most likely will not return to this particular campground. - Linda and Jim
Aug 2014 - $9.00
Great park; friendly staff; clean restrooms. Spacious sites. Close to Pella. Our loop (#34) had nice lake view. A good number of first come first serve sites. - Linda Johnson
Sep 2013 - $18.00
Well the campsite was nice, but the grass was brown. They have tent camping, but complain if you pitch one up. I got a slip on the tent "you're killing our grass please take down". If you're here to fish Lake Red Rock fair warning!! Bring your own bait because the closest shop is 20 miles away and if you ask the locals they have no clue. Its a real nice lake but no lake bait shop and the gas dock opens at 9am and closes at 2pm. So bring gas as it's 4.75 a gallon for 87 octane. The campground does not enforce the 10pm quiet time because at 2 am the campers were lighting off fire works. If you like college frat parties you will like this. Drunk boater camping here after a day on the water. All night long yelling and stumbling around the camp. We reported them every night, but no change. We will not come back because we talked to others and they say it's like this every weekend. - duramax man
Aug 2019 - $30.00
Kellogg RV Park was a pleasant surprise for an overnight stay just off Interstate 80 and especially for under $30.00 a night. Even though you're next to the highway the traffic noise is not disturbing. The park was well laid out with adequate space between units. All sites are pull through with stone drives for RV and mature trees and grass for patio area. If you want a composite picnic table be sure to ask when making reservations. The park has showers and laundry on site. The staff was friendly on arrival. The entrance is through the Phillips Gas station / Best Burger Restaurant, don't overshoot it. We would stay for one or two nights when in the area. - Done With It
Jun 2019 - $25.00
This is behind a Phillips gas station and such a nice country setting. Very cute and manicured with tons of pull throughs. Has a little restaurant and ice cream service inside station with reasonable prices. We could have stayed longer but was an overnight stop. We would definitely stay here again if in the area! - 7Hillsonwheels
Jun 2019 - $28.00
Easy check in at gas station. Lot's of rain over the past weeks made site driveway muddy and soft. We got muddy but didn't have a problem maneuvering. They have a tornado shelter-thankfully we did not have to use it. Good overnight spot. Noisy highway. 45ft MH towing. - Ramblin-Roll
Aug 2019 - $10.00
CG overlooked Red Rock reservoir. Site was nice and shaded but they are removing a number of Ash trees due to the Emerald ash borer. Towns of Knoxville and Pella are within 15 miles. The National Sprint Car races were going on at Knoxville so CG was close to full but very quiet considering the number of campers there. Most were gone during the day and early eve because of the races. Hiking, biking, fishing and boating are things you can do. CG is well maintained and very nice. - Jay Miller
Jul 2019 - $10.00
Beautiful location. Mature trees, and nice trimmed grass between sites. Literally hundreds of sites, but only certain ones have views of the lake. Gravel camp pad. 62 was level with a little adjustment. Bathrooms had lots of bugs but otherwise clean. Especially liked site 59-63 that have views of Red Rock Lake. - David A Wright
Aug 2015 - $18.00
Nice gravel sites. Paved roads. Lots of space between sites.lots of shade. Good tv reception. Nice boat launch. Lake Red Rock is the largest lake in Iowa. - Ric53
May 2018 - $16.00
Sites are small and packed together. There are sites with gravel pads, and some pull-through sites. Most sites are small for motorhomes. Our 27 ft RV just fits in our pull-through. The campground is on a beautiful river with lots of trees. - JJDK
Nov 2015 - $11.00
This is a beautiful campground right on the Rock Creek, which looks more like a river. However, there is not a level site in the entire campground. All sites are grass and very soft ground. This is not a campground for motorhomes or even larger fifth wheels. We stayed one night, had blocks under our jacks, and by morning the blocks had sunk in the ground 8 - 12" and we had to dig our jacks out. I would not recommend this campground to anyone with a larger RV. I rated this campground the way I did because of the unlevel sites and very soft ground. - kwikkeys10
Jun 2015 - $16.00
My daughter and I stayed here for an overnight in a Class B RV. We arrived and the host was very helpful. We took a spot right on the lake. It was not level but we wanted to be by the lake for the evening. The campground was very clean and people were nice. We were there during the week and it was not crowded at all. We used the 30 amp hookup. If we were in our old Class A pusher it would have been tight getting around. This spot is great for smaller motorhomes and trailers but there seemed to be a few spots for the big ones. We'd stay again for sure. - Flash
Sep 2019 - $47.00
This is a very nice park and the staff is helpful and friendly. All of the roads and sites are gravel with grass between sites. The pull through sites are level and plenty long to disconnect and park on your site. The roads are all easy to navigate for a big rig. There are large, mature trees, giving most of the sites plenty of shade and some of the sites have lovely patios. It appears that the utilities are all located conveniently and in our site we can attest that they were in good working order. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit. I did not use the bath/showers/laundry but did peek in and all were neat and tidy as was the rest of the park. There is a very nice common area complete with a large fire pit and comfy chairs all around. Other amenities include, two playgrounds, swimming pool, fishing pond, sandpit, GaGa pit, and disc Golf to keep everyone outside and busy. There is also a hiking trail that apparently leads to a park; I was not able to use it as it was muddy. The only drawbacks to this park and the reason I gave it a 3 out of 5 rating is the location. Not only is it just off of the highway but also right across the highway from a speedway - so you can expect road noise for sure and more noise during the race season. AT&T and Verizon worked well in the park and we used our satellite for TV coverage. However, the price of the site includes cable. - the Fishers
Sep 2019 - $51.00
Overnight stay, easy on and off I80. Pretty sites with grass and trees. Didn't use the bath house so I can't comment to that. It was raining so there was some mud but staff offered to move us if the site was too wet. It was fine considering the weather. Nice patio site with fire pit, chairs and picnic table. So the bad part is the highway. You can hear it and see it. Lots of trucks. With the windows shut and some white noise it wasn't too hard to sleep. Windows open the noise was annoying. Maybe we'd go back if traveling in the area. It's certainly convenient and we like KOA for that. Staff was nice. - Patnal
Aug 2019 - $65.00
New section of park is disjointed from main section and all amenities. RV site location elevation made it difficult to walk to office/store. They do offer golf cart shuttle service when you call, but doesn't help much when they are closed. These sites should not be in use until site location is completed. These sites should have been discounted until completed. Expressway noise was unbearable. No WiFi at location. - DNY97
May 2019 - $25.00
You can bring your horses with you to Elk Rock campground as there are trails, riding ring, mounting posts, a shower spot for your horses, horse poop dumping area with a wheelbarrow, places to keep your hay, and DNR is friendly! Everything for the horses is very clean and kept nice! The only downfall to this place, is there isn't hot water in the shower rooms most of the time, but it's still a decent temperature so you don't freeze to death hahaha. People out there are very friendly as well! I LOVED it and will be coming back again!
Highly recommended if you love horseback riding and camping! - LilLezBean
Jul 2017 - $18.00
Also an equestrian park. All facilities we saw were complete and well taken care of. New plantings everywhere. Newer restrooms and plentiful shower facilities. Also had firewood available for sale. - Linda and Jim
Apr 2016 - $11.00
We camped at this campground pretty early in the season. There were quite a few sites that remained open through the weekend. One disappointment was when making the reservation the visitor alert stated that the shower houses would be open the day of arrival. The day before departure the alert was changed to the following weekend. We were not dependent on using those facilities but if I was a tent camper or someone without a bathroom I would have been disappointed.
The playground at the electric campground needs to be updated. There is an additional playground in the equestrian campground area that was much nicer and offered more. There are pull-through sites available as well as back-in sites. There were also tent camping areas with grassy pads.
The park offers hiking/multi-use trails. It appears this campground caters more to the equestrian campers. They had very nice facilities and there were numerous day use equestrian visitors.
Staff was rarely seen throughout the weekend and no one ever checked in with us. I maybe saw them drive through one or twice throughout our stay. This may be different during peak seasons. There was a reduced rate for our stay-I am guessing because the facilities were not turned back on yet. The campground offers 30 and 50 amp electrical sites but no water or sewer sites. - Moon8211
