Onawa was our halfway stop from a trip home from South Dakota. About 5 minutes before we pulled into Onawa, our camper started making a terrible noise. Problem....blown axle. The staff provided us with possible repairmen, but it was a Friday night. They assured us we could stay at least 2 more nights in the event we could not get anyone to come. We were blessed because a repairman fixed our camper so we could leave Sunday morning. The staff helped make a bad situation much more comfortable! Thank you SO much. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Travel Trailer.

The park is on the shore of Blue Lake. While our site wasn’t on the lake shore, we could easily see the lake.
The young lady at the desk was very pleasant and explained all the rules and location of facilities very clearly. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Stayed here 3 nights during the week, so it was fairly empty and quiet. However, there were quite a few empty, seasonal RV's here, and we were told place gets packed on the weekend, including a fair number of boats on trailers parked along edge of gravel/mud campground road that ran along one side of our site. As for the roads, they are gravel, and to some degree dirt/mud where there is not enough gravel, and after a couple of days where we had torrential rains, the roads and sites can get pretty wet and muddy. Water did soak in/drain off in a day in places, but be aware. Sites were fairly level, with nice amount of shade and spacing. Campground has pool, store, playground, laundry, bathroom/shower facilities, and all were clean and well maintained. Campground WiFi was decent, and Verizon cell coverage was excellent. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Not a whole lot to do in Onawa proper, but the nearby portion of the Loess Hills Scenic Byway provides a nice day of auto touring. Make sure to find and stop at the Loess Hills Forest Overlook, located just off of one of the side loop roads of the well-marked Byway - it has great boardwalk/platform overlook of a section of the hills and valley, and is a great birdwatching stop.

This was a very quick stay for us. We called that day and reserved a spot and arrived late and left out early the next morning. The reservation and map was in the night box and clearly marked. Nice park from what we could see. Convenient to the interstate and easy to get to. Nice gas stations with store at that exit. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here on our way to and from Glacier National Park. The facilities are well-maintained, the park well laid out, and in a great location on a beautiful lake. Across the lake is Lewis and Clark State Park which has a reproduction of a keelboat visible from the shore. There is a nice pool and playground which the kids spent alot of time at. There is a well-equipped camp store and the the staff were very friendly and helpful. The roads and most sites are gravel with some being grass and all are generally level. There are plenty of mature trees and shade. The Staff were very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed our stay. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Motorhome.

This park is a tired old KOA. All the best water front sites seem to be permanent and taken. Our pull through was plenty long and level, but needed gravel. Didn't want mats on grass, but we just had dirt which turned into mud after rain. Some gravel for a patio area would be nice. Turn into park had metal posts at border of driveway which made it hard to turn into drive without going way over into the next lane of the road, then onto the grass to avoid hitting the post. They were there on exit drive too, so fortunately nobody was coming from the direction we were turning so we could take the entire roadway to keep from hitting the post. I think the price was too high for what you get - no cable and slow wifi. I made a reservation on their web site for a 30&50 amp pull through site but when I told them I needed 50 amp upon checking in, they asked for more money. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Rate reflected was by using KOA points. This is very nice park, in a beautiful setting, right on the lake.
Three things are needed here, and they are, by no means, the park's fault.
1. Water pressure regulator for very high water pressure.
2. A very good water filter. The water is orange, and even double filtering for us did not work.
3. Bug spray. TONS of mosquitoes. Hubby got eaten alive, and I was killing them in the RV, even with peppermint oil on all the screens.
We arrived a day early, and the very sweet hostess was kind enough to accommodate us.
We had a HUGE pull through, by an alfalfa field, that allowed us to get rooftop satellite. The park was easily maneuverable with our 35' fifth wheel, and long bed dually.
A negative of this park is, the county road out front has pretty heavy traffic at times, and vehicles drive very fast on it. It didn't bother us much, as we were in a spot away from the road.
They have a pool, a .50 cent a game pool table, and horseshoes, none of which we used.
We would definitely return! We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

We were here for a week and it was nice and peaceful. The sites are gravel with some grass. The rain does create large pools of water that turns to mud, however fortunately it dried out quickly. The one way system doesn't quite work in this park. We were in a pull through where there was only one way to exit, yet people were constantly driving the opposite way through open campsites the wrong way to exit the park. When all the sites were full people did u-turns to get back out. The laundry facilities were adequate. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Motorhome.

We had two long days of driving and needed a place in between Iowa City, IA and Platte, SD to spend the night. I knew our two girls would be bored after 7+ hours on the road and it had been close to a week since we had stayed in a campground with laundry, so the KOA seemed like a safe choice. I called ahead to verify they had 24x7 laundry which they verified. This was important, as we did not know when we would arrive; luckily, for us we arrived at 3:00 PM, which gave us enough time to explore the campground. The campground was packed; it was the KOA's Free Night of Camping promotion. It appears our space was the last available space in the campground. Our neighbors were quiet and respectful, although I wish the spaces had more space. The laundry room was well maintained and inexpensive. The playground was perfect for our two girls who played their hearts out for an hour and a half. The dog walk area, along the underused road was perfect for our dog. It was long, grassy, and had trash bins strategically placed. There is water, electric, and sewer hookup. There is no cable and for the first time in a long time, we skipped testing the Wi-Fi. Would I recommend this park? Yes. Would we come back? Yes. Informational: Our RV is 36' long. We camped at Onawa / Blue Lake KOA in a Motorhome.
