Date of Stay: August, 2017 - $3.00
Overall Rating:

This is a USFS campground in extreme southwestern Kansas. The price is half off due to the America the Beautiful Senior Pass. The campground is about 4 miles east of Highway 27, down a dusty gravel road used by oilfield service trucks. It is located in the center of the Cimarron National Recreation Area in the bottomland of the Cimarron River. The campground is shaded by a few big cottonwood trees. The campground is served by two water spigots and a two vault toilets. There are no hookups nor a dump. All sites are back-in. There is no privacy between sites. The internal road is dirt and the parking areas are a combination of dirt and gravel. Judging by the potholes in the road, it does not appear as if the campground has received much maintenance recently. The Forest Service lists the usage of this campground as "light" but the August weekend I was there the adjacent picnic area was very active with many ORVers - some of whom liked to drive around and kick up the dust in the campground. During my stay, the campground itself had only one other occupied site besides mine. I would stay here again but, if possible, try to avoid a weekend in the summer. We camped at Cimarron National Grassland in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The campground is at the entrance to an ORV area with many trails. It is a pleasant quarter mile walk to the Cimarron River when the ORVers aren't around. The nearby Point of Rocks was a landmark on the Santa Fe Trail. The adjacent picnic area has fishing ponds. The bird watching was surprisingly good.
