This was a very nice park. We stayed in the equestrian area because that’s all that was left. There our spot was huge but it did cost extra. No WiFi or cable. But a nice little playground and small store with essentials at the main area. They had planned activities and a putt putt course. There is a public pool close which costs a little but the facility is nice. Plenty of hiking trails and cave tours close by. Overall a very nice place to stay. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Travel Trailer.

We did the X cave tour which was neat and a 2 mile hike we enjoyed. Plenty of hiking and caves in the park to explore (cave tours cost a little). Great ice cream at the food truck by the welcome center!

Very popular campground. The utilities run in a straight line with each 2 campsites sharing the same water and electricity services. This means that some sites have longer than 25 ft runs for water, electric. Some are more than 50 ft runs, but it is detailed in the website. Choose wisely. The weekend we were there, everybody had a fire going and so smokey at night you couldn't see the stars. Quiet time is 11pm. Water was out one day. Great hiking. Lots of space around many of the sites. Lots of kids riding bikes. Mini golf available. Several cave tour options. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Travel Trailer.

Okay this place is AMAZING! Its a steep 11 degree grade getting into park and a couple sharp turns (swing wide), but once in, it has much hidden beauty. We were told there were 160 caves in park. We did the guided tour and then an unguided tour, which was scary and downright PERFECTION! We did a lot of off the beaten path hikes, followed super crystal clear mountain water streams up to hidden waterfalls, showered under the falls and swam. Hiking trails were a blast and the rock-climbing wall - yeah, experts only, its a cliff. MUST VISIT this park, nicest local people out of all the 44 parks we have been to! Sewers only available on one row so plan accordingly and Oct is almost always full due to an amazing Halloween time. Sites require some leveling and another site we stayed on was a bit muddy, but we loved the park. Restaurant in park sucked but the rest was great. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Be careful, this is a real rugged park in areas if you are hiking. Drive diligently through roads leading up to park. The cliffs are breathtaking during day and non-visible during night so be careful. Great hickory trees - we were able to cut and prune and make amazing hiking canes.

Originally reserved site 55A, but it was too tight to back into. Got moved to 69, but the utilities were over 100 feet away right behind spot 70. Got moved to 70, had electric (30 & 50), water, and sewer. Site was mostly level and pea gravel. Had nice metal/vinyl picnic table, fire ring, and lantern hook. Mature trees to tie up clothes line or hammock. Site 70 backed up to the road entering the campground. But traffic was limited so not an issue. Beautiful park full of caves and bridges to explore. Some reviews say "internet" but none available. Large campground with many different type of sites. Unfortunately the two clerks that check you in know absolutely nothing about campgrounds or rv's, totally clueless. Reservation tags that expired a week earlier still on the sites. Very poor communicators. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is our favorite ky state park.....most sites are level with gravel...there are some tight spots depending on the size of the crowd camping...mostly shade and some full hookup sites...the rest have electric and water, all utilities worked well...the shower houses are clean and like most parks could use some updating but I've seen worse....plenty of hot water...you can purchase wifi, tango network but during the winter it is non existent and during the summer it is slow but bearable....you can pick up a lot of local tv stations with antenna....cell service is good, we have at&t.....this is a very family friendly park with putt putt, pool, horseback riding, a lot of hiking trails, cave tours, lake etc....the main road into the park is one of the most scenic of any state park in Ky...we will continue to go there again and again..... Arrived at 5:10 p.m. and the office was closed so we did a self-check in with no problems. The sites are mostly in an open field with some shades sites in a steep area. Since it had been raining for the past week we opted for one of the drier sites in the open field. The set up is rather haphazard and it is hard to tell which electrical post, water spigot goes with each site.

I'd stay here again for a one or two-night stay and would definitely take the cave tour. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Truck Camper.

There are no real restaurants nearby so it was good that we had stopped at the grocery in Grayson to stock up. There is a restaurant at the lodge but no sign as to when it would be open.

We stayed here 2 nights and found that it was very quiet at our site. The roads from the interstate were narrow and had several hairpin turns. There are only 3 pull through sites and very few big rig sites. The electric was good but water pressure was very low. Sewer connections at the sites were not where they should be and we had to wait until we were ready to leave to dump. This would be fine for a family with children and a small class A or trailer. Overall, the campsite was great. The staff were helpful, bathrooms were clean with hot water, and the hiking trails were well-marked. The cave tours were also very nice. There were some small campsites, so it is best to check out the size before making reservations. My only complaint has to do with the "mountain bike" trails. They are suited only for horses or foot traffic, not bikes. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Tent Trailer.

Date of Stay: April, 2015 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

The campground area is fairly small and pads are close together, much like many older KY state parks that were originally built by the CCC. The access roads are narrow and have some tight turns and steep grades, but we saw a number of mid-length travel trailers in the campground (30-35' long.) Be advised that there is a hairpin turn just past the Welcome Center with a very steep grade just as the turn ends - underpowered vehicles will have difficulty here and backing (if required) will be a challenge. Bring your own firewood as we did not see any for sale inside the park. Double-check your utility distances unless you have extensions handy.

Our spot, B-48, was near the rear restrooms, but unfortunately many KY state parks do not fully open all facilities until Memorial Day weekend, so we had to use the restrooms at the check-in station at the campground entrance. These restrooms were quite old and worn, but were cleaned regularly. Most posts were in great shape, but a few of the pull-throughs looked a bit worn. Utilities were in good order and looked well maintained, although in some spots they are a long distance from the pad and will require extensions. Distances for utilities are provided on the reservation website and are accurate, so check the description first to be sure you will be able to reach.

Many of the spots are fairly level (ours required only minor front-rear leveling) but some of the pull-throughs will require substantial effort to achieve level. Check-in was easy, park staff were very courteous and helpful, and the campground host was easy to find at all times and quite friendly.

The park itself is really beautiful, clean, and well maintained. It offers much to do (mini-golf, 'gem mining', horseback stables, cave tours, boating, hiking, bird watching, wildflowers, etc.) There are a number of planned activities as well that are posted all over the park. We will definitely camp here again. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Tent Trailer.

This was our second time at Carter Caves State Park. I can say that we had a great time. There is a multitude of things to do they have a large number of hiking trails, two cave tours and canoeing. They do have full hook up sites available but because they back up next to one of the campground roads we did not stay at one, our site did have water and electric. Pad was large. As with most state parks it is showing it's age. The site next to ours the electric did not work. Carter caves in in a remote area do not expect for there to be a lot of stores or shops in the county. We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This was our first trip, and as novices, we were not sure what to expect. The campground was very small and the sites were on top of each other. Our site was horrible to get into (we stayed at #15). I don’t know how anyone could ever pull into the next site #13 to us. Narrow roads, trees and a poorly situated dip in the road made it very difficult for us to maneuver into the spot. Also, our fire pit was so close to the camper pad we couldn’t open our awing. We had to haul the (heavy) picnic table back over to our site, because there were two at the next site over. Some of the other sites, which were recommended to us, were booked, but we found upon our arrival that #23, 36 and 37 looked very nice. We were near the bathhouse, which was old and dated, but found it to be clean and well-heated. I showered there, and had plenty of hot water. Showers areas were roomy enough, and again well heated. It was still very chilly on this Easter Weekend, so I was happy to go to a heated bathroom. As recommended, we bought firewood locally (at the campground) but found it to be fresh wood, which did not burn at all. We loved the campground activities. They just opened a “gold mine” area but we didn’t do that with the kids. We did go on the cave tour (highly recommended). There were many closed tours due to the unfortunate outbreak of “white-nose syndrome” (killing bats) but we had a delightful tour. The kids and I attended a haunted ghost story at the Lodge one evening. The hiking was great, and we did the moderate (few rough climbs) 3.5 mile trail around the campground (recommended). Overall, the camping sites were much less desirable than the overall camping experience. I would love to go back but will definitely avoid the sites in the middle of the grounds and find another place to buy firewood. No alcohol on the allowed property and if you want a cocktail, prepare to drive 30 minutes into Moorhead because Carter County is dry! We camped at Carter Caves State Resort Park in a Motorhome.

The rate we got was with discount added. We would have gave the campground a 10, but the sites were a little close for our liking. Other than that we loved the park. The caves were OK, but the trails were outstanding. People were friendly and it was a really family friendly campground. We will be staying here again when we get a chance.
