Saying Palmetto Island is isolated is an understatement. It is literally cut from the Louisiana forest about 10 miles south of Abbeville. The interior roads are paved, kind of, and the sites are gravel (not the small pea size gravel it is crusher run). Each site has a table, fire ring and post for a lantern. Water and electrical hookups are 3-4 feet off the ground and look new. The sites are wide, deep and surrounded with tall oaks and palmettos. The back of each site is a forest. Most are very private; some you can't see your neighbor. There is WiFi but it was very unreliable. Verizon worked fine with 2/4 bars. Don't plan on satellite as only a couple of sites had a clear shot but there is off air network TV. The volunteers keep this place in good shape. The bathhouse/laundry was very clean and orderly with a newish appearance. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

If you like seafood drive into Abbeville to Duruy's or Shucks. The oysters and shrimp were GREAT! The famous Tabasco sauce plant is about a 40 minute bone jarring drive away but we found it worth the trip.

This is a fairly new park (open since 2010) and it shows. Everything is clean and new. Sites are all back-in, but they are roomy, widely spaced, and well shaded. There is free laundry and wifi, which is unusual for a state park. Unfortunately, the wifi is pretty slow, but cellular connectivity is fine, even though the park is pretty remote. We liked being away from the highway and took advantage of it by taking Route 82 along the gulf when we left. Highly recommended. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Truck Camper.

Overall Rating:

Getting to the park from Abbeville involved some narrow and winding roads with little or no shoulders. Reduce your speed and drive carefully. Inside the park, roads were patchy but maintained. Palmetto Island is very nice, a perfect winter retreat. We were there in March and the insects were starting to be a problem. All the sites are large and fairly private. Some have concrete pads, most are gravel but well drained. A few have FHU but most are water & electric only. There is a small pond & stream for fishing and canoeing/kayaking. The facility nearest our site (38) had screened porches, (free) washers and dryers and bathroom/shower facilities. There's a short nature trail that takes you through the palmetto woods. There are some beautiful old oak and magnolia trees. Watch your step because there are poisonous snakes. There have been Black Bear reported and wild pigs roam the woods. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Great setting! Site are well spaced, level, long (40' motorcoach), and offer some privacy. Sites include table and fire ring. All sites offer 50/30/20 amps and water. Eight sites offer sewer at no up charge. Campground has WiFi that worked fairly well but slowed on the weekend when the campground filled up. 2 bars for ATT & Verizon and satellite depends on site. With our Winegard X2 we had no issues. I would have rate Palmetto Island higher if more sewer sites, had camp store (no ice or firewood). Finally, a lot of litter ignored by staff, too bad. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Great Park!! The sites are huge, lots of follage between the sites so you really can't see your neighbor. Could be a challenge to get satellite because of all the trees. Verizon works pretty well considering the location of the park. Very quiet. Free laundry too. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is not a park that you'll want to stay just a night at. It's too far off the interstate. It's more of a destination. Come here and relax. The roads are a in need of a little repair; but navigable. The restrooms and showers are very clean. The laundry is free and there's a book swap library right there. There are warnings of the park being an active bear area; we didn't see one yet - but we did see a couple armadillo. Sites are level. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a fabulous state park! The newest in the Louisiana park system, it's clean and well-maintained. The "Comfort Stations" housing the restrooms, showers, laundry, and book exchange are very nice. And the laundry is FREE. Sites are among beautiful trees and a nice ways from each other. All park staff and camp hosts were helpful. There is an active Friends of the Park group that has events throughout the year. I can't add much to other reviews. We LOVED it! We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

One of the cleanest state parks we have stayed in. Our site was level and well maintained. The grass was cut and neat. The park employees were friendly and professional. The roads are starting to get potholes and needing to be patched. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Louisiana State Parks appear to take pride in their campgrounds and this shows. Sites are long and wide. Restrooms are clean and even have free laundry. The wi-fi is slow but it works. The hosts were very nice as were the kiosk staff. The surrounding swamps were just like you'd expect to see in a movie. Abbeville is not far, with the usual services including the requisite Dairy Queen. The interior roads could use some work, and better trail maps would be nice. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Motorhome.

What a lovely park! The sites are well spaced and have vegetation between for visual separation. Everything was very clean. The bathrooms were spotless and kept that way by amazing, vigilant volunteer camp hosts. There are free laundry facilities that were also spotless thanks to the volunteers. When we were there it was very calm and quiet. However, fair warning, according to the staff, on many weekends the park turns into party central with the local folks. It can be late nights with lots of noise. According to the staff, the sites on the cul-de-sac around 66 are the biggest party sites. We were there on Christmas weekend and it was almost empty. There are roadways and trails for biking. Also, the roads just outside the park are calm enough to be good for biking. Do be wary for loose-roaming dogs. The birding is great if you are into that. There is park WiFi that sometimes worked, very slowly, so don't depend on it. We were able to get DirecTV satellite with our portable dish strategically placed, some sites would have more of a problem. We had very good Verizon voice and data. We started out on site 67 but moved to site 66 since a big family with music came in next to site 67. We would definitely stay here again, but would avoid weekends. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Visited the Tabasco factory on Avery Island, about 50 minutes away. It was a fun tour and I loved the Tabasco shop and restaurant. We also visited Abbeville. St Mary Magdalan Catholic Church was a beautiful church to visit and we even got a private tour from the friendly local priest.

One of the nicest state parks I've been to. The sites were large and fairly private, walking trails were short but fun and the local wildlife was plentiful. The grounds are very lush and peaceful. The hosts picked up trash at least twice a day and kept the place immaculate. The free laundry was in good shape. Showers/bathroom also very clean. There are plenty of bear warning signs but also watch out for the feral pigs. I don't know if they're aggressive or not but hearing them snorting at you as you're walking through the woods is a bit unusual. Please note the roads around this park can be pretty horrible. I found this common through Louisiana. I would highly recommend you follow the directions listed on the park website to get in and out of the park. I followed my GPS on the way in and it was extremely rough. I followed the park instructions on the way out and it was well worth the extra 15 minutes travel time considering how much better the roads were. Site accessibility (Easy to get to. Roads inside the park were great. Level sites) - 5 Campground location (Good location if you want something remote. Fairly close to Lafayette for bigger town stuff and Abbeville for small town stuff) - 4 Nearby amenities (Everything you could need was nearby) - 5 Site Privacy (Spacious sites and fairly private) - 4 Campground amenities (Free laundry, trash cans near every site, clean bath/showers) - 5 Dog friendly (Great walking loops and plenty of space) - 5 Activities (hiking, biking) - 5 Cost ($18/night for 50 amp W/E) - 5 Staff friendliness (Very nice and helpful staff) - 5 Connectivity (Good signal w/out a booster for both ATT and Verizon with good download speeds. Great OTA) - 5 Total rating = 4.8. We camped at Palmetto Island State Park in a Motorhome.

The newest park in the Louisiana system, Palmetto State Park is about as good as it gets. I think everyone of it's sites back up to a canopy of tropical vegetation. Nice separation between sites. Two very clean bathrooms with FREE laundry facilities. Abundant wildlife in park. We saw deer, hogs, raccoons, armadillos, and rabbits. Very quiet during the week. Nice biking throughout the park.
