Big Eddy's CG is a primitive campground situated on the Penobscot River. There are several water spigots to fill up with water and there is electricity in the office if you need to charge up your phone. Also, the office has wifi so you can check your email or receive text messages. There are two showers available for use and cost $1.50. The fishing on Penobscot River is excellent and I learned how to fly fish during my stay. There is excellent hiking all around as well. The Golden Road is a rough road whether you are coming from Greenville or Millinocket, so please take your time and make sure you have all of your provisions as you don't want to venture down this road more than you have to. I will have to say I was more relaxed at this campground than I have been in a long time, I finished five books during my two-week stay. There are books and puzzles you may borrow in the office, along with organic coffee for purchase every morning. Firewood is also available for purchase. - NanetteLkc

Campground has changed ownership in last several years. The maintenance of the grounds and roads has degraded since the change but the attraction here is the Big Eddy on the West Branch of the Penobscot and the fantastic fishing and wilderness experience. We are 35' long, had some trouble backing into our site due to the placement of stones following a "curved Pattern" -- but got in OK. Next time will try for a different site. We were on the river - electric is available a few hours in the AM and PM and the rest of the time you're on your generator (if you have one). A big negative with this CG is no dump station. You have to carry into town and dump at the municipal water treatment plant or your next destination. The access road(Golden Road) to the CG is VERY rough. Go slow or expect to have repairs needed when you leave. Closer to Millinocket than Greenville. - gcd28
Jul 2006 - $27.00
These primitive sites are huge along the office side of the Penobscot River. The sites we were in were large with multiple backup sites for trailer tents. The rushing sounds of the rapids were the only background noise heard. Speaking of noise, there is no cell phone reception and radio reception is poor to none. By far the most peaceful campground I've ever visited. - thecyr

The park is in a great location right on Moosehead Lake. The road to the park from Greenville is paved, but a little rough. The sites are wooded and well spaced so you don't have to listen to your neighbors. There are only a couple of pull through sites. The only threaded water supply is at the dump station. There is water throughout the campground and out houses. There is one central bath house with showers and toilets. The staff is friendly and we saw deer in the park each day we were there. - JimSC
May 2013 - $29.00
This state park is pretty. The roads are quite rough getting to the park the last 5 to 6 miles. So rough that cabinets that never opened in three years did fly open. The sites are extremely tight for bigger rigs and more geared for tents and pop ups. This is a nice place to fish and hang out. - SteveAZ

Jul 2018 - $50.00
Easy online reservations, very friendly owners and knowledgeable about where to see moose. We only stayed a couple days before the holiday - great location for Mount Kineo hike and moose watching. Verizon cell and mifi worked fine, no T-Mobile. Sharp turn into the entrance approaching from the south is very tricky in a 40 foot MH + tow, but doable since there was no outbound campground traffic. Very little road noise, nice quiet campground. We would stay here again. - Roaming Together
Aug 2016 - $45.00
Beautiful, rustic campground; in trees and secluded from neighbors. We were in 40' MH but it reminded us of our tenting days. There was no TV reception and Wifi was only in top level campsites, but we loved the place! Owners VERY friendly and nice. Only W/E provided at site but we did get one, on-site, free dump during our stay. Love this place and campground. - Mainiac
Aug 2015 - $35.00
Rate reflects a one week stay and High cost reflects that this is the only campground in the area, and the Moosehead Lake area is a very nice area. 30 amp / water at my site, WiFi was marginal (worked about 40% of the time). Restrooms are vault / pit toilet, they do have showers with running water but I wouldn't use either, very dilapidated. One pull through site, all others are tight back in on dirt with leveling needed. No laundry or recreation area, no children's area, no antenna tv or radio, US Cellular phone service. Would not stay again if there was a choice. - SailorGolf

This is a lovely, quiet campground on stunning Moosehead Lake in the North Woods of Maine. It is located 6 miles down a well-maintained dirt logging road. The facilities are basic and spotless. We love that it has no Wi-Fi and minimal cellular reception. It is a place to go to escape; a perfect Maine campground. There is a wonderful walking path along the shore, and wildlife abounds. We prefer this campground to nearby Lily Bay State Park. - gardenbug

If you need hook-ups, do not even think of going to Frost Pond Camps. By the same token, if you want to experience camping at its essence you cannot find a better location. The owner is helpful and friendly. He ensures that Frost Pond Camps remains quiet and peaceful. There are cabins for rent at the campground in addition to the six campsites. The campground is located in a secluded area, approximately 1 1/2 hours north of Greenville, Maine. The road leading to the campground is dirt and can be rough on your vehicle. But the bumps just add to the remote feeling. Literally, you can place your hand in front of your face at night and not see it. It is that dark. The sky is overflowing with stars. The pond is beautiful and many fishermen were catching large brook trout. - Winnie

Jun 2016 - $30.00
Stayed here for a week in June. We made our reservations a couple months in advance so our choice of sites was limited; however, the sites are all very nice, wooded, and with space between the sites. Many sites have interesting ledges or large boulders left after the last ice age that provide great places for kids to climb and explore. One tip is that the sites are identified by the size of the RV that they will accommodate. I found these to be very conservative. Our Class C is approximately 30 foot overall with the rear slide open and we would have easily fit in the campsites identified as "small - pop up or tent up to 20 feet." I believe the sizes allow for an RV and one vehicle. Road in from the park gate is about a mile of well graded gravel surface and there were no overhanging limbs to worry about. Access to the lake was by a short walking trail to a beach/picnic area with side trails along the lake shore or through the woods. - ME for Maine
Sep 2009 - $19.00
Peaks-Kenny State Park is in between Greenville and Bangor, Maine. There are about 56 sites in two loops a walk away from Sebec Lake. The sites are nice and good size and there is a central washroom with bathrooms, showers and a dish-washing area. The land was donated by the Mr. Peaks in the memory of his parents and one sister that was married named Peaks-Kenny. The walk down to the lake is about 5 minutes and there is a huge shaded picnic area on the beach. A playground, boating area and swimming area are all in this area. The lake looks out to the mountains up north and the views are outstanding. Beautiful lake. We arrived around 11 in the morning and from Sept 20 to 23 it is self-registration so we took our site and put our money in an envelope into the spot for it. We were one of two campers in the park at that time but as the day wore on more tenter's came in. Just a reminder the Maine State Parks do take reservations now for the summer months and after the mid of September reservations are no longer taken and the price drops too. Maine State Parks have really increased their cost for a night’s stay for an out of stater at their parks but with the drop in price it cost us $19.26 including tax for a night and that is without services. Nice stay – we stayed here about 19 years ago during the summer with our three children and it was quite crowded so this stay was so quiet – quite a change. - gsnakehill

Aug 2018 - $48.00
This crowded campground exists primarily for children -- with a pool and lots of activities -- and motor-oriented adults with ATV parking and access. Cost is demand driven; our site went from $40 to $48 depending on date. Using your air conditioning is an extra $2/day. The walking path we tried was not well maintained. Exit SR 6 at Pond Road. Ignore any computer instructions that have another route (particularly via Prides Loop; you will end up in the pond). - Mtmoi
Aug 2018 - $40.00
We stayed here based on the reviews. Previously we had stayed right in Greenville. I don't think the reviews reflect the reality at this campground. Not to say it's bad, but it is just OK. Our 50' site barely fit our 45' motorhome. It was really just a very small 45' site. We had to ark across the street or else loose our entire side yard. Wifi was very poor to non existent. Our site was nicely shaded and it had a picnic table. The campground should put a sign on Pond road prior to and not after the entrance. You are coming down a hill and their sign is hidden behind trees until it is too late to make the turn. With no where to turn around we had to unhook at the farm just beyond. - 06Millennium

The Birches has 5 RV sites. One particular site is right on the lake with an absolutely gorgeous view. The sites have water and electric. The sites are not cramped. Dump station nearby. The restaurant in the lodge has a wonderful menu with specials every night. The food is great. The staff is friendly and nice. - william wilson
Jul 2013 - $48.00
After visiting their website and reading all the flowery prose, I booked two nights in our RV. I wish now I hadn't chose to visit this poor example of what being a good host means. The Birches talks a good show, but all is not as it would seem. The RV sites are dreadful, Moosehead Lake is barely in view, you are placed at the marina, and the mechanics garage is in front of you. You feel like "Cinderella", before her fairy godmother appears. My advice to campers is to stay away from here. There were other issues, but the bottom line is the Birches rates a "2" and I'm being generous. - prose4those
Sep 2009 - $40.00
The Birches is a beautiful log cabin resort on the prettiest part of Moosehead Lake. It offers 2 RV sites, 2 yurts, and housekeeping cabins. The RV sites are right at the marina, which is on a sheltered channel. Campers could dock their own boat right by their RV. The Birches offers launching for your own boat or rental of a power boat or kayak. Added treats are on-site float plane sightseeing or a moose cruise on a pontoon boat. There is a beautiful full service dining room overlooking the lake. - trailergypsy
