Bathrooms were pretty typical. No trash, clean toilets, but a lot of bugs and some mold on shower curtains. Loop B is very open/no shade. Great views of surrounding water. Lots spacious. All other loops are in the trees with no views but you would get shade. In early May campground was only about 1/4 full. On Sunday everyone else left and I was the only one in the loop! Surrounded by water and marshland so be prepared for bugs in summer. Sites level and well draining gravel. Nice fire pits with adjustable height grill. Two fishing piers on the property. Could launch kayaks from waterside lots in Loop B. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Go to the very tip of the peninsula to find a very nice swimming beach and picnic area. Sunset Cove restaurant about 5 miles away has nice water view, decent food and reasonable prices. Not much else around this area. This destination is for getting away and relaxing, not for "seeing the sites."

Stayed over Easter weekend which turned out to be opening day for rockfish. Full hookup sites are well kept, large and secluded among the trees. There are electric/water sites on peninsula where it was very breezy that weekend but offer stellar sunrises & sunsets. Biking, fishing, hiking, swimming abound. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I enjoy this park because it has a great kayak area. There is a protected area where you can kayak without the power boats cruising around. Lots of campsites, one loop is full hookups in the woods. Also very private with vegetation around you. another loop, on the water is electric only. but its open so its hot in the summer. Then there are a few other loops, mostly for tents but an RV can get to some of them. There is a short hiking trail, a boat launch, a swimming area and boat rentals. The nature center is a good stop and there is a small store there. You are far from any major stores, maybe 30 min. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If the lighthouse is open, take the tour. Early in the season, fallen trees are cut and left so bring an ax to chop wood for your fire.

We arrived after two weeks of ridiculous rain and the weekend forecast predicted more. We stayed in Greens Point, site #87 which was pet-friendly, extremely spacious and very private. The phragmites blocked a little of the lovely water view but also provided a wind screen. Electric only which is all we need. I understand Tulip Loop has full hook-ups. Although the ground was saturated and standing water everywhere, the mosquitoes although no worse than at home, were still pretty bad. We enjoyed the nature center and civil war museum on site. The one short hiking trail was mostly underwater so we didn't attempt that but did hike down the park road to the beach. The restrooms were spotless and the showers the BEST we've ever had. Separate stalls with a private dressing area, bench, shelf, hangers. Fabulous. Because of the weather the campground was pretty empty but that made for a very quite stay. We would go back to this park, but more likely in late April or early May. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Motorhome.

I have stayed here twice in the last month (Sites 80 and 63). Both were great sites, but I liked 63 the most. It had tons of room to spread out and no close neighbors. They only have 1 FHU loop (Tulip) but a couple of others with power only. The FHU loop is back in the woods with some of the other loops having a nice water view. Since it was just starting to get warm there were not too many bugs, but the warmest night (high 60s) we did see a few mosquitos and as it get warm with all the standing water around the sites, you will need to bring plenty of repellent. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Stayed in Tulip Loop #72. No 50 amp service available, only 30 amp. Lots of biting flies. No golf carts allowed. You'll need a vehicle to get around, even to other camping loops. Our site was fairly level, all hard packed gravel and VERY large. We had plenty of room for our 38' motor home and tow vehicle. No TV reception, no cable and no WiFi. We had very marginal cell service. Nothing near the campground in the way of town, stores etc. And lastly, the campground is supposed to be haunted. It is the site of a Civil War prison camp. The lighthouse has very limited open houses, so we never got to see inside it. The road to the park is narrow for a large rig. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Motorhome.

I support the other positive comments. Overall Point Lookout is a very nice state park and is recommended. However, Maryland has a new reservation system and the staff seem to be still learning so check in is a little slow. More important you cannot check in before 3 pm, so if you arrive before 3 you must wait. Not "user friendly". We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Site was very level, with a nice long driveway. Right on the water, with beautiful views. Surrounded by tall marsh grass and a few pine trees, so it felt very private. Close proximity to the bathhouse. Seems like most other sites on the outside of the loop were similar (grassy setting backing to water or trees), while the sites inside of the loop were in an open, marshy field. All sites included a picnic table and fire ring with grill grate. Campground in general was very well-maintained, and saw the hosts mowing different grassy areas several times throughout our stay. Only negative was the amount of pollen that coated every surface within minutes (although I know this is a seasonal concern pretty much everywhere). We had to wipe down every single item multiple times. Bath house was very clean and well-maintained. Looks like host cleaned it several times a day. Only two shower stalls, but they were nice and roomy with fairly hot water. There was also a dishwashing nook in the bath house with nice double-sink, which is always a bonus. This park offers tons of activities and amenities, such as a huge fishing pier, camp store, canoe/kayak rental, lighthouse, historical sites, swimming beach, etc. Most of those were still closed for the season, which was fine. Still beautiful to look at, and we didn't have to fight the summer crowds. The park used to be a prison for Confederate soldiers, so lots of cool exhibits and memorials for history buffs. Again, the setting was very beautiful, but the bugs were killer. Luckily, there was a nice strong breeze blowing off the water during the vast majority of our stay. However, the second it stopped, the bugs descended on us. Mosquitoes, gnats, biting flies, you name it. If they were this bad in April, I can only imagine how awful they would be in the middle of summer. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Looks like you can board a day cruise to Smith Island directly from the park during peak season, which sounds neat. This is a very rural area, and there is not much to do in the immediate vicinity. Leonardtown is about 45 minutes away, which offers all major stores. St. Mary's College is about a 20 minute drive away, and the PAX River Naval Station is about 35 minutes away.

I can't say enough good things about this park. Rangers and staff are very friendly and helpful. The park is well kept though you can see areas where they probably would spend the money if they had it. (Such as some of the wooden bridges/planks).

The park is on the water and there are many sites (not full hookups) near or on the water. There are numerous places to fish, bike or hike. The terrain is pretty much level so it is easy to get around.

We stayed in the Tulip circle which has full hookup sites and allows pets. There are no bathrooms in this loop so you need to have facilities within your RV.

There was a lot of standing water and many mosquitoes! I'm sure you will need bug sprays during warmer months. But bring your bug spray and you're good to go! Great places! One of my favorite parks! We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in the Tulip Loop, a full hookup loop. I suspect that's why no bathhouse. Other loops have them. The sites are level, gravel and large. I had no problem with a 38' motorhome and tow vehicle. Each site has a large area for the fire pit and picnic table. full tree cover so no TV reception, and very little phone. My MiFi usually showed barely one bar. Lots of room between sites. Very quiet. As someone noted, you need a vehicle to get from one area to another. The park is spread out. Great place for fishing and crabing. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Motorhome.

This park has many things to do within its boundaries as well as historical sites.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes, poison ivy, deer flies, briars, and thorn vines are all around the camping sites. The park is in a low area and near bay waters. This lends it to swamp bugs. The camp host for this loop left the park before his hosting time was finished.

This loop does not have any public bath house or restrooms. This loop has full hookups so this may be why. Restrooms in other areas of the park we are familiar with, are nice. Those areas are still subject to the swampy environment.

Campsite 65 is gravel with timbers at the edges. 30 amp & (50 amp older style 'L' plug) amp service, water, and sewer. We had room to park tow dolly at back of site and place our 30' MH near the hookups.

This site had been recently used by someone who had disposed of egg shells, food bones, and crab shells in the vegetation around the edge of the campsite. Park personnel should have caught this on a departure site inspection and cleaned it up or had the camper clean it up. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Motorhome.

Park had all the camping activities we look for. Hiking, history, fishing, beach, beautiful scenery, water activities. BUT you had to drive to get from one area of park to other, very spread out. Nature center, museum, and lighthouse closed, no lifeguards on duty, surprised since we visited July weekday. Very few shaded sites where we were (Greenspoint Loop). Very quiet, we were one of only two occupied sites for three days.

Grass was very high in some spots, campsites had lots of poisin ivy around them. Might be a better park to visit in the fall. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Motorhome.

Price was average as weekends are higher and Golden Age Pass not honored starting Friday and two-night minimum on weekend! Sites are well spaced with many wooded and shaded. We had full hookups which worked well. Haul your own trash to central dumpster. Weekends are popular; we arrived Thursday evening and the camp was nearly empty. Many bring boats and fishing gear. Park is remote, mostly quiet, very pleasant but mosquito spray is probably needed. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Interesting history nearby - a lookout for British invasion during War of Independence as well as during the civil war. Point was also site of a prisoner of war (civil) and hospital. A few miles away are St. Mary's College, Patuxent Naval Air Station. Seafood on Wynne Road a few miles away on Smith Creek - try Courtney's for "local flavor."

Stayed in Tulip Loop, which is the only full hookup loop of the 5 campgrounds. Others have assorted or no services. Dogs are permitted only in a few loops. One loop of cabins. Nature Center is great and offers great programs during the summer months. Bird watching is magnificent with eagles and osprey. Kayaking and/or canoeing in the small lake is enjoyable. Monthly Civil War reenactments and opening of the lighthouse are fun and educational. Dog beaches on both north and south side of causeway, but not at the river beach area. Mosquitoes can be bad during the summer months, so come prepared with plenty of spray and netting. We love it and plan to return. We camped at Point Lookout State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
