The best part of this park is the host/caretaker. He is the most helpful, friendly, accommodating and available we have had the pleasure to work with. If he can't help you, you can't be helped. This park is convenient (due to a toad breakdown we had to walk/bike everywhere), clean, quiet and picturesque. Most sites are close together (only 2-10 have some vegetation between) and they allow both back-up and face-in parking). Everything worked great, Wi-Fi better than almost anywhere we have stayed, cell service (ATT) and Dish satellite were surprisingly strong. Our nightly rate is based on a month stay. Be aware that, until they change their website/info, they have added three sites 23-25 next to the office overlooking the park beach and playground that do not have covers for the picnic table. Everything else is the same but the brochure and park map are misleading if they indicate that all sites have covers. Houghton RV park is great location, short or long term. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is a very nice campground located on the Portage Canal in Houghton, Michigan. Paved roads, paved sites, FHU 50 amp, sheltered picnic tables, fire pits, privacy shrubs between sites. Long sites with room for motorhome, tow car and enough room for chairs overlooking the canal. Lovely way to enjoy the water and relax. The host is very helpful and checks to see if you need anything. He helped us get a repairman out for a leaking hot water heater. Would make it a point to stay here again for sure. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed here for a week and would return. Beautiful location right on Portage Lake Canal with easy walk to town and several good restaurants. Excellent location as a base for exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula. So much to see in this area! There is a great city park for children across the street from the campground, where our Verizon cell service was very good. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Don't miss the underground part of the Quincy Mine tour. Drive up to Copper Harbor, visit the lighthouse at Eagle Harbor, stop at the visitor's center in Calumet. The food at Joey's and The Den was very good and we heard good things about the food at The Library. Walmart and a good laundry are not far from the campground.

This a great little rv park! It's right on the water and each site has a covered deck with a bench, picnic table and a view! The camp host is very pleasant and even stopped by to check and see if everything was ok after we got settled. There is a nice walk/bike path from the rv park into town and to the Isle Royale visitors center. We've been on the road for 9 months and this was one of our favorite stays! Wish we could have stayed longer! We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

This was our first time staying here and we loved it. The breezes were nice on the waterway and we enjoyed the boat traffic as well. The host was very friendly and helpful. I asked if I would be able to drive into the site (facing the water) instead of backing in (with the utilities on the proper side) and was told "some people with long cords and hoses do that. Let's walk down and see what you think you'd like to do." He had a very accommodating attitude. We would return to this very nice park. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is a very nice RV Park run by the city. All roads and sites are paved. The roads were wide enough for us to maneuver our 40' motor and the site was plenty long enough. Each site has a shelter with a picnic table and either a patio or deck. We were in the back row, which is elevated so we had a wonderful view of the river, looking over the units in the front row. The host was most helpful and accommodating. We had site #15 and had no problem leveling our motor home. Even though there are not much for amenities, I felt the price we paid was fair. We had stayed at another park in the UP for just about the same price and it was mediocre at best. The WiFi works great and the cable TV was good. I would definitely stay here again We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is a small, clean, well maintained city rv park located on the Portage Waterway inside of a large city park. Pets are not allowed in the park but a short walk to the entrance road leads to mile long walk along the river and into downtown. The park has full hookups and if parked on the lower level, you can back in or if your utilities are long enough, you can pull in to face the river. The camp host was very pleasant and has lots of information about the area. The park does recycle. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is a wonderful little RV Park right on the Portage waterway. All of the sites have views of the waterway. Unfortunately, all of the sites are back ins. You can pull in and connect to water, electric and sewer if you have extended cables and hoses. The town is an easy bike ride along the waterway. Houghton is the home of Michigan Technical University. We were quite impressed. The Campground hosts/managers are extremely friendly and helpful. They are natives of Houghton. Full hook ups on the river. Nice site. Restrooms are shared with nearby park. Not the best set up. No showers. No dogs allowed in the park nearby, kind of inconvenient. Tight getting into and out of the spot with my motorhome, but doable. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

What a pleasant surprise. Not like any City park we've ever been to. The entrance is off the highway and just down a hill. Small sign so be on the lookout. You cross a narrow bridge and past some playground tube slides to get to the RV park. There is ample room to park your RV and register. The roads are paved and a bit narow but really no problem. The host is very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. The RV park sits right on the portage canal with views of Hancock across the water and the lift bridge. Some sites are more level than others, and the upper row appears to have more satellite reception challenges. All sites are asphalt, with grass and a covered deck in the rear with picnic table and bench. Each site has a big fire pit. Some of the sites in the upper row, 1-12, have more landscaping separation. All sites are back in. The sites are carved out on the front end to park your toad. Our site was level and right on the water. The utilities and cable were good. Strong cell signal. WiFi was mostly good to very good. There are toilets you can use at the recreation park a short walk away. The City park stretches along the canal past the lift bridge and makes for a very nice walk, about a mile and a half round trip. You can wash your car for $5 and your RV for $10. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

First Impression: Very, very nice. Back-in to a waterfront site on the Portage River. Attractive. Safety: no concerns. Access: Michigan route 26, just south of the river. Look for small brown "camping" signs on road. Municipal road in good condition, no big sign, GPS took us right in. Office: Occasionally manned but camp host is next door. No store. Credit cards accepted. Call for reservations. Facilities: No pool, spa, fitness, or rec room. No laundry room. Restrooms part of city park but no showers. No propane sales. City park (next door) has huge playground, river swimming area. No off-leash dog run. Campground: Roads are asphalt, sufficiently wide with gentle turns and no overhead obstacles. Big rig friendly. Prevosts will just fit. Sites are all spacious, back-in with trees and bushes between most sites. No tent area, yurts, or cabins. Sites are asphalt and sufficiently wide but some sites "tilt" towards the water making auto-leveling difficult (our front jacks bottomed out). Utilities at mid-rig with full hookups-20/30/50; no meters. Adequate water pressure with good taste. Sewer pipe is 4" threaded, about 2-3" above ground level. Nice, covered concrete patio with aging picnic tables. Fire rings and elevated, charcoal BBQ grills; wood at $5/small bundle. Poor satellite views (in a steep river valley). Free cable TV (16 channels). Free Wi-Fi but weak range and very low bandwidth. Verizon phone at 4 bars; 4G at 5 bars. No railroad or aircraft noise but notable local traffic noise. No recycle bins. Bug Report (early June): Big, black bees. Small brown ants stayed on the ground, small black ants invaded the rig. Runners: campground roads good for running, no fitness room so no treadmills. Yoga: patios are plenty big enough for your mat. Conclusion: Overpriced for no amenities; local camping options are limited. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Houghton is the only major city in this part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There is a lot of history with copper mines and smelting plants (now as museums). Only a few major chain restaurants (Applebees, Pizza Hut), typical fast food with a few local restaurants. Landromat. Wal-Mart (diesel at $2.449). Econo Foods. Banks. No RV stores. Ace Hardware. Auto dealerships south on route 26.

We loved this park! The City of Houghton has really made it a lovely place to stay when visiting the area. All sites are back-in and we had a site right on the waterway. Each site has a covered table and a park bench sitting on a deck behind your RV. Our back window overlooked the deck and the wonderful views of the waterway and the town of Hancock on the other side. The bike/walkway along the water is lovely with freshly planted annuals and herbs and across the street from some incredibly homes. It is a mile and a half walk round trip from the RV park to the bridge. Yes, stopping at Roy's bakery is a must. Dan Kemp, the manager, was very helpful and friendly. We told him we were ancestor hunting and he directed us to people and places to do research. He's a Yooper and has written a great book that you can buy from him at a discounted price and get it autographed. The nearby day use park does not allow dogs so you have to walk your dog on the bike path along the water. Love this place and if it weren't so far from home (Nevada) would visit it often! We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We have had a really frustrating experience here at Houghton City RV Park. I reserved site #8 on May 18th. We check in and pull up to #8, an excellent site, and it's occupied. Seems we got shuffled because the people in #8 had decided to extend their stay. We were offered several lesser sites even though #5 and #6, both excellent sites, were empty. We got stuck in #10. Big mistake. Even though all sites are blacktop, this one has a large pond right at the hook-ups. When it rain,s as it just had, water and mud collect in this low spot making it difficult to hook up whether you pull in to get the water view or back in. The sites on the front row, #3 thru #9 are excellent. The balance of the sites are very good. Internet is NOT reliable. Does not work with Android tablets at all. Works most of the time on the Windows laptop. Our neighbor has also experienced connection problems with his Apple. Cable TV works well. Some road noise from the street above and behind but quiets down a night. Houghton and the Keweenah Peninsula are great and the camp ground host/manager is a good ambassador for the area. Certainly would stay here again, just make sure to get site #3 thru #9. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

Superb park with waterfront views at every site. Only problem is there aren't enough spots; we would have stayed more than two days if there had been a cancellation. Park so you have a view of the water, forward, backward, whatever. When arriving, do NOT turn at Houghton Canal Road: no park access despite the advice of some mapping programs. Lots to do in area but don't miss the Quincey Copper Mine tour ($19 for seniors). We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

Allow at least a half day to drive the Copper Island Loop. Lots of places to stop. The town of Gay has a bar. Fort Wilken is almost entirely a re-creation and not recommended. It was Fort Useless: never a shot fired in anger; reopened after Civil War to give the Army a place to put excess troops.
