We had a nice lot near the little beach access area with a nice view of the bridge and Huron. Lot was wider than it was long it also had a slope to it so getting level was a task. Option would be to pull in parallel with the road, which several people did, but then our fire ring would have been behind the motorhome. Very nice park with some hiking trails. Close to town and several attractions. There are 2 dump stations in the park. One near the entrance by the north loop and one between the 2 southern loops. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

Great State Park right on Lake Huron with a great view of the bridge. There is road noise here, but the park and views are great. There are some trails to walk on also. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Rate is per night, add $8 for the online reservation and $9 per day for vehicle pass unless you purchase the $33 annual pass, which is a bargain compared to some other states. We stayed in the upper loop, which has a few pull-thrus long enough for big rigs - although the curves at the end of each row can be difficult to maneuver, especially if the park is full. People tend to park their vehicles right at the edge of the pavement, which makes things very tight with our 68' combination. We followed the signs and they led us into our site facing the wrong direction, so we had to reorient ourselves. It might be worth a recon trip if you book one of those pull-thrus, they face both directions. The park does pack 'em in pretty close, but it's a great location for the activities in the area. Lots of campfire smoke in the evenings, as is typical in state parks. This one has some trails with Mackinac bridge lookouts, and you can ride your bike on the roads but be aware the lower campground is quite a bit lower and has a steep hill to climb back out. We checked the lower loops for size and didn't think we'd fit in any of those spots. There are some right at the water's edge with NO hookups, and NO generators allowed. The upper campground seemed more spacious and had less trees. If you're in a tent or small trailer keep that in mind, the lower campground is very cozy. There's a trail from the campground to the rest area/visitor center that's off the freeway, so you can get brochures and information about the area if you missed it on your way in. Nice campground, we'd stay here again. We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Mackinac Island. It's less than a mile to dock #1, you can ride your bike there and take it on the ferry. They'll also pick you up and take you back to the campground. Crossing the Mackinac bridge is $4 each way for cars or motorcycles and $5 per axle for us big guys, so plan on spending some time on each side to reduce the need to cross multiple times.

We stayed at the park 2 night to visit Mackanaw island. The lower campground is right on the water. We stayed at the upper campground. We were backed in to shrubs which was very private. Some of the camper backed into open space between campsites. I would not recommend these sites unless you were camping in a group. The fire pit was nice/clean. The roads were well maintained. They have a picnic area/playground for the kids and a lookout toward the Mackinac Bridge. It is very convenient to town and the ferry. I wish they had a play area for our dogs to run after being cooped up in the RV for road travel time. They could have used an area to run around in but I notice none of the state parks have dog park areas. Overall...I would recommend this campground. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a nice state park campground. The sites are not necessarily level and there are only electric hookups (no water or sewer), but we still enjoyed our stay. Our site (#32) was fairly private. It did back up to a cemetery which didn't both me, but I suppose might bother some people (there was a fence so it wasn't obvious). Bathrooms were very clean. We didn't use the showers, but they were private rooms that looked nice. Verizon signal was pretty good. My biggest complaint is that for a 3 night stay we needed to have a 4 day Michigan State Parks pass. It was cheaper for us to buy the annual pass for $33 than pay $9/day. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a very nice state park. We were in the upper portion, away from the lakeside. The sites next to the lake would be great for families (we no longer have kids travelling with us). The price of $30 per night does not include the reservation fee or the Michigan State Park pass which is $30 per year for non-residents or $9 per night. The bathrooms & showers are in good shape, firewood is available for sale. We enjoyed the walk on the paths, especially the viewpoint of the Mackinac Bridge. This park is very convenient to the ferries to Mackinac Island. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Base Camp for Mackinaw Island and surrounding area. We camped in a little rig "Tear Drop" style RV w/o toilet or shower, plus we like to eat outdoors using the picnic table and set up our dining canopy for sun and weather protection and thus rely on condition of campgrounds facilities and being nearby our site. So our critique is focused in that area. There are 2 campgrounds here. We were in the upper but scouted out the lower and found it to be less crowded with sites having more space and much better shower/restroom facility (newer/more modern). Yes, we did get close to the restroom/shower building in the upper; they were decent but an older facility showing its age, needing a little updating. Shower stall area was separate section separated by a breezeway from the restroom building. There were 8 private / separate shower rooms/stalls with a lockable door with an alcove for changing along with a small narrow wall mounted bench. A bit crowded with little ventilation/air movement - bad design/layout. Spray from shower got all over changing area. Needed a shower curtain and change direction of spray to face opposite wall. Floor was a pool of water very slow drainage and because park was packed, these showers got heavy use / the only facility in the upper section. Restroom and communal sink area was opposite the shower section with separate entrance and laid out typical government building style. Communal sink area was messy and also needed paper towels that could be used to wipe down area after each use, also needed hooks for hand towels and small shelves for toiletries. Rest of campground was packed and most sites were crammed next to each other much like a typical KOA. Neighbors were on top of each other and like some other reviews stated a typical Michigan State Park. We camped at Straits State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Nice, well shaded area where we stayed, in the upper campground. Our 37' 5th wheel would have been hard to get into the few slots in the lower section (near the Straits). Plus, mosquitoes would have been worse in lower section. When I hooked up to 50 amp, there was no power. The first ranger was unable to fix the problem, so the next morning, another ranger came around, and figured out the breaker was bad. This wasn't a big problem - it was cool enough, we could run on the 30 amp and 1 A/C. They were prompt at they could be - I did not have a problem waiting overnight to get it fixed. Very stable power, once the 50 amp breaker was replaced. Sites were fairly close together - like many private parks we have been in. Dump station was well laid out, and easy to use. Hose with screw connection available to flush black tank. I think the price is high, since there was only electricity, and the sites were fairly close together. Price is for site plus Michigan DNR sticker you must have (prorated out over the 11 days in MI state campsites). Lots to do in the area. We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Mackinac Island is a must, whether you want to bike, shop or see historical sites. We enjoyed 8 mile plus ride around island perimeter, with lots of stops to enjoy the beauty. Ride over on ferry was fun. Stayed out of the busy tourist area, except to eat. Joanne's double dark espresso fudge was outstanding. Chuck Wagon has great hamburgers. Bought smoked fish in St. Ignace from Manley's. Wow. Outstanding. Had white fish and lake trout. Loved them both. Prices seem very reasonable to me.

Overall Rating:

The campground has two sections. The lower is right next to the lake, and some sites have a good view of the Mackinaw bridge. There are some swimming areas there. The sites in the lower section are generally closer together, shorter (although there are a few sites long enough for a class A or long fifth wheel). Some are not level, and some look like they tend to be muddy. Most are back-in sites.

The upper sites are more spacious and most are long pull-throughs. I don't know about the bathrooms in the lower section, but in the upper section they are great. Large, clean, and the showers are excellent: private rooms with plenty of hot water and no "push button" valves. The check-in procedure was aggravating. There may be an attendant at certain times of the year, but when we checked in, we had to stand in line to use a dedicated phone to the reservation desk. Even with a confirmed reservation, we had to provide all the check-in information again to the agent: name, address, credit card number, license number, camp site, number of people, etc. Then, when I was finished the agent told me I had to hang up the phone, that I couldn't hand it to the guy who had been standing there waiting (of course that guy was put on hold when he picked up the phone). They really need to fix that procedure.

There is constant noise from the traffic on I-75, but you tend to get used to it. If you are from out of state, buy the annual Michigan Park pass if you are going to stay in any Michigan park longer than 7 days. There are a few hiking trails in the park. The dump station and power is good. There is no water at the sites, drinking water is available at the dump station to fill your tanks. This park is good for it's location and close proximity to the Mackinaw Island ferries, and the "touristy" stuff in the area, but not for a good "rustic camping experience."

I would have rated it higher if it had not been for the aggravating check-in procedure. We camped at Straits State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Gang Plank Pub & Grill on the main drag in St. Ignace: good food at a reasonable price. The prices of all the ferries are the same, but we prefer Shepler's because of the better parking at the dock. If you catch their first two excursions in the morning, they take you under the Mackinaw Bridge with a narrated tour (same price).

Straits State Park is on the northern side along the lakes on the outskirts of the cute little lakeside town of St. Ignace. One would think that with 270 camping spots there would be plenty of room for everyone, but this place books up on weekends so call ahead to reserve a spot. We checked in on Friday, August 25, after making a reservation, and there were just a few empty campsites. The campground has sites of many sizes, suitable for tents up to 50 ft. rig pull-throughs. there is an upper and lower campground, the lower being closest to the lake. There is indeed lake shore camping, if you don't mind being close to your neighbors with lots of kids playing nearby. The water views are beautiful. We picked Site #249 in the upper campground, which was surrounded on 3 sides by cedar forest, level, shady and lovely, with an electrical hookup. First thing we noticed was the road noise from Interstate 75, a bit of an annoyance but tolerable. We headed out on our bikes to the town of St. Ignace, very picturesque with harbor lights, a boardwalk along the shoreline, shops and restaurants, and nice water views. We camped at Straits State Park in a Motorhome.

There are several private ferry companies located in St Ignace which will be happy to take you on the 40 minute trip to Mackinaw Island, where there is a historic fort and museum and the Mackinac Butterfly House and Conservatory. Round trip for the two of us with our bikes was $72, plus admission to the attractions on the island also require a fee.
