We stayed here almost 20 years ago—nice to see the upgrades. We stayed in Sunrise Campground which is new, open prairie, with FHU with 50 amps. This is open prairie so lots of sun. The campground is very well maintained. Very nice solar-powered picnic shelters, flush toilets—no bathhouse at this site because all FHU but there is a shower at the campground across the road. Good spacing with the sites, which are gravel and almost all back-in. Very level and long. Very nice lake for boating and swimming. Lots of trails through prairie and trees, and the park is on the Casey Jones bike trail—a six mile loop. Services and facilities are about 10 miles away in Slayton. Very relaxing stay. We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Motorhome.

Lake Shetek state park is very nice. Features large sites in both the older lakeside section and the newer Sunrise full hook-up section. Has great walking trails with beautiful lake views. Also has swimming beach, canoe rentals, and some historical interest sites. Nice bathhouse as well. TV reception and internet is limited due to fairly remote location. We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Under an hour to Pipestone National Monument. This Federal site tells the story of the importance of Pipestone to the American Indians. Plan on a couple of hours to see the entire exhibit.

None of the sites seem level. Shady but still some sun in Oak woods section of park that has only electrical (NO water.) Our fire pit was in an odd location for the site. The bugs around the fire at night were not too bad. The bathrooms were clean and we never had to wait. We ran the AC the entire time and had no problems with electrical supply. Our site had a tree strewn view of the lake. The lake was great for kayaking and fishing. Caught a 25" pike while there. Also enjoyed biking the park and Loon Island. Our biggest issue was with all the dogs barking and whining. We had 9 dogs to 4 sites. And kids on bikes going way too fast to be in control. We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Very nice park with a new section of full hookup sites. They have 32 new sites that are all full hookup sites. The new sites, some of them backup to the woods and others are out in the open. No low hanging trees, as it is new, and no shade. The sites all are very spacious in the new section. The old section with the electric sites are a little smaller, but are well shaded and more private. Plenty of wildlife. We were seeing deer every time we went for a walk. A nice park overall and we will return. We stayed in a full hookup site. Only downsides were the sewer pipe was about 8-9 inches above ground and makes it difficult to drain your tanks, and the lack of shade trees in the new area we stayed in but did enjoy the big open sites. We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

A great location for a campground - a beautiful lake, plenty of hiking trails, and some fascinating history to learn about in the area. We took advantage of a geocaching class held while we were there, and went to look for one of the caches hidden in the park. However, significant storm damage in the park from a few weeks back resulted in a huge pile of bulldozed trees being deposited on the cache site, and we were unable to extricate it. Considering this is Minnesota, we were expecting to be eaten alive by mosquitoes while sitting around the campfire, but were pleasantly surprised at the lack of biting bugs. The bathrooms are great - updated and very clean, which was notable because the campground was packed while we were there. In addition to taking advantage of the park itself, our family enjoyed learning about the local history (1862 Sioux Uprising) and traveling to nearby Walnut Grove to visit the site where Laura Ingalls Wilder's family had a dugout on Plum Creek. The downsides to this campground: the sites were really packed closely together, at least where we were camped at site 19. Our site was difficult to back into and had a big, muddy puddle at its entrance that was still holding quite a bit of water after three days. The electrical outlet was positioned oddly at our site, and the fire pit was so close to our camper, we had some ash burn a hole in our canvas. Or maybe that was ash from the fire in the next campsite, which was immediately outside our windows on the other side! We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Most sites are not level. Campsite is shady yet not heavily wooded. Restrooms and showers were clean, and with two facilities, in close proximity to all campsites. Nice view of Lake Shetek through trees. Sites are various sizes; some offer more privacy than others. Campground host and rangers were accessible and friendly. We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful country, terrible park. Two different 30 amp pedestals continually tripped their breakers. We never did get power into our rig. We finally left in frustration. When leaving we incurred some major body damage because of the narrow roads and large trees restricting turning room. I would not recommend this park to anyone driving a 40 ft motorhome. Nice people running it though. We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Motorhome.

We've been here several times and found it quite enjoyable. In general, you'll have larger spaces with mature trees offering good shade, most sites have a nice view of the lake. Some sites are for tenting only. Other sites only offer 20amp electric. Sites numbered 31 & up all seem to offer 30amp service. None have 50amp. No sites have water or sewer though there are several faucets around the campground. Two restroom/shower buildings (northern is newer) are well maintained. Any site would work well for a pop-up or travel trailer. 5th wheels would be comfortable in most sites as would a motorhome - check site description carefully though (some are not real level!). Good hiking at this park (trails are easy and well maintained) & canoe rental. No naturalist. Decent dump station. Swimming beach - well there is really no beach at all - just access to the lake with swimming area marked by buoys. Nice breeze in the campground most of the time. If you like bird watching, you'll love the trails here - lots of variety to see in the marshes, woods, and grasslands. We camped at Lake Shetek State Park in a Motorhome.
