I made a serious mistake but just looking at this campground's website and not reading the reviews on RVParkReviews. The website gives a very warped and idealistic view of the property. There are no signs on the highway indicating where the entrance is located. After you finally find the entrance you have to negotiate potholes and overgrown foliage above and along both sides of the road. There are even low overhanging limbs where you park to register. There whole place is an overgrown, unkempt fish camp. They have benches along the river, but you can't really get to them because everything is so overgrown. One sticking point is that they charged more for the site than stated on the phone and on their sign at the office. At check in they even wrote down the stated price on the check in form and we later discovered they charged a higher price. When we questioned the price at check out they said that is their price and if we didn't like it we could leave. Another strange thing is that when you check in you have to give them all kinds of personal details and then sign a wavier releasing them from any liability from THEIR negligence. We will never stay there again. BTW, there was one glowing review from years ago. But bet is that review was posted by a relative.Avoid at all costs. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Motorhome.

We were in a desperate situation trying to find availablity for a flexible time and on a holiday week. Knife Island was the only campground that could take us. We were able to park horizontally, giving us a large front yard looking towards the St. Louis River. Unfortunately, due to overgrowth, we were not able to see the river. No bathrooms, only portable toilets, which were only dumped once a week and no lights during dark hours. Full of spiders, not cleaned and ran out of toilet paper all the time. Grass only cut twice while there for 2 months and no weed whacking. Grey water was allowed to flow outside onto the grass. A honey wagon comes around once a week for sewer and never totally emptied the black tank. The sign up front said water & electric included but after a month we were told since we were running A/C it would be $3.50 a day more. Temps were close to 90 degrees. A very rustic campground. Picnic table barely useable. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We read the reviews of this campground before booking and thought, it cannot be that bad, can it? Well I can tell you it was not awful, but other than their price of a bundle of wood, I struggle to find much else that was good about it. Our picnic table and fire pit have not had anyone weed whack them most of the summer. The grass was over taking both, making it impossible to use either. The grass in our site was not mowed either, so that was very disappointing. Our site, site 1, had garbage all over it. The place is run down, with nobody caring to take care of things. I would not stay here again. The dumpster and recycle bins were overflowing with garbage, so it stunk a bit. The road to drive in the campground is a dirt road with pot holes large enough to swallow a small camper. We did not have any trouble with low hanging branches as others have mentioned. Our friends that camped with us had to sign a waiver for their kids being there. They said most people do not bring their kids. It was in regards to the river mostly. If they maintained it, I do not think they would have to worry about it, but again, its so overgrown that it makes the boundaries tough to see. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

First Impression: Quaint. Secluded. Rustic. Thirty spacious sites tucked away in a small forest. A few sites in a meadow. Safety: no concerns. Access: Don't trust GPS. Don't trust Microsoft maps or Mapquest; they can't even find the address. Google maps on wife's phone took us right in. Poor roadside signage. Office: Casual, family staff. No store. Credit cards accepted. Must call for reservations and directions. Facilities: No amenities. No laundry room. Restrooms are porta-potties; no showers. No propane sales. Playground consists of a few swings and see-saws without the sees (or saws). No off-leash dog run. Campground: In a flood plain (St. Louis River). Roads are narrow, dirt/gravel with gentle turns in meadow but sharp, tight turns in forested section. Low hanging branches. Big rig challenging. Prevosts will have problems in the woods. All sites are spacious, pull-through but mostly back-in. Tents can go almost anywhere. No yurts or cabins. Sites are level, gravel/dirt/grass in "ok" condition with grass landscaping. Utilities at rear of site with either 20/30A or 20/30/50A (at extra cost); monthly meters. Low water pressure with "ok" taste. NO SEWER; pump truck available for a fee. Dump station. No patios. Old picnic tables. Open ground fires not permitted but fire rings are at some sites. Buy wood in office. Good satellite views in meadow; not-so-much in the forest. No cable TV. No CG Wi-Fi. Verizon phone at 5-bars; 4G at 4-bars. Distant railroad, no aircraft, but interstate noise notable when outside. No recycle bins. Bug Report (early June): Small brown ants; mounds all over the place. I sprayed and sprinkled (ant "food"). Runners: CG roads adequate for running, no fitness room so no treadmills. Yoga: If you don't mind, place mats on the grass. Conclusion: Marginally overpriced. We're here because a big, Duluth air show has other CGs booked. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Cloquet is a small town in two parts, separated by the St. Louis River. Walmart on route 33 just off I-35. Kwik Trip diesel at $2.499. Banks. Applebees, Perkins, some local and fast food restaurants. Walgreens. Menards (mega hardware store). Super One groceries. RV dealer, parts, service on Highway 61, west, over the river from the Knife Island campground. Drive 19 miles to Duluth for big city amenities.

Our site was gravel/grass but spacious. We had a back in site with W&E 50A.

Although there is no sewer connection at the sites, the park offers free of charge, a sewer truck to empty your tanks.

Campground is built along St Louis River with access to Knife Island.

Staff was very friendly and often asked if there were anything they could do for us.

Would stay here again. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Neat place to stay in RV, the sites are shaded and mostly level gravel. Nice folks run the place. Only electric and water sites but they have free weekly pumping service. There are only portable toilets and no showers. Stayed here many nights. There are some nice tent sites also. Many trees and neat geologic features. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We only spent one night at this very small little campground on the St Louis River. It was the site of a slate mine. Owner was a nice, friendly lady. Not much to do here, but a passable place for a pass through. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Clean campground with dirt roads. Seasonal campers do not honor the 10 mph speed limit, threw up a lot of dust. Easy to get in with big rig and on a pretty river. Would not stay here again, music from River Inn just on the other side of the river keeps you awake and just kind of a different atmosphere here. There is a dump station, but price of $28 and no sewer at site seemed high to us. We camped at Knife Island Campground in a Motorhome.
