Just when you think you have already seen the best COE campground, you find another great one. We got a call later on Thursday afternoon, asking if we would like to come early. We were five hours away so had to wait until our scheduled Friday date. When we checked in, I mentioned the call and that we were actually booked on a second site for Saturday and Sunday due to the busy weekend. The staff immediately searched for a different site so that we would not have to move and came up with one. All sites are shady and yet the trees don't interfere with setting up your RV. Lots of activities for the kids and a concert Saturday night. Many people had boats and there was a nice swimming beach as well. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Motorhome.

COE campground right on the water. Hilly campground but level sites. Sites are shaded and not on top of each other. Roped off area to swim in. Easy to launch kayaks. Very friendly staff that want to please. Busy on weekends of course but weekdays are great. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Motorhome.

Great COE campground. We stayed in the first loop on the left, which was quieter than the other two loops. Easy to navigate, great staff, site was huge. We liked it so much we extended our stay from 3 nights to 6. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Another excellent COE park. Many lakefront sites with generous spacing for most. Most of these are low to the water which facilitates easy launching of kayaks and canoes. Roads are easy to navigate and are in good condition. The sites have recently been improved by replacing the wooden crosstie borders with concrete borders. This makes for a very clean look. Sites are asphalt or crushed rock and the sitting areas are crushed rock. This is the first COE park in this area to do this and I hope the others will follow. All the sites are generally level, but be careful when selecting sites; some are VERY short. The lengths given on the Recreation.gov site seem to be accurate. Several of the pull through sites are not very good (such as site 59). Although these have a sitting area adjacent to the parking area, the parking area is simply a wide, marked off place in the road. One hiking/biking trail is in good shape, but not well marked. Restrooms are clean, modern and well stocked. There are 2-3 fishing piers and a boat ramp in the campground. There is an overgrown convenience store/restaurant/gas station (with diesel fuel) 5 miles from the CG. Ice is available at the CG, but I don't think firewood is. This CG has a very nice, clean white sand beach, plenty of play fields and good dog walking areas (although none are designated as such). Verizon signal is approx. -112 dBm (1-2 bars). According to the gate host, they are going to credit card payment only (no cash) later this season. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Beautiful park. Pull thru was a little narrow for our 36 ft motorhome. Sites are nice for travel trailers or back ins. Lake is great and huge. Be nice if you had a boat or wanted to fish. They also have a beach. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We loved this campground. I would've given it a 10, if it had full hook-ups, but we knew that it didn't from the start, so it probably isn't fair of me to give it a 9. It's easily accessible, but stay on the main roads (don't listen to your GPS when it tells you to take Ryan Salem Rd and Lindsay Rd because they're very dark, twisty, and creepy at 9pm). Speaking of 9pm, be sure to get there before 10pm because the gates CLOSE then, and there's no code to get in (exit only after 10pm). There are 141 sites total. Two are park host sites, MANY waterfront sites, some pull-thru sites, and 31 are first-come-first-served sites (three or so of these are also pull-thru, and a couple are waterfront). There are shade trees GALORE. Most of the pads are level (just a few of the inside-loop ones may slant a little toward the road). Some of the sites have concrete terrace-type steps leading to the picnic table area, which look really nice, but anyone with mobility issues should avoid them. Also, some of the picnic table areas are at the back of the site, which seemed a little awkward to us. There's a parking area for boats and jet skis, but some campers even had them docked behind their campsite. There's a large section of the lake that's cordoned off for swimming, along with lots of recreation areas for the kiddos -- basketball courts, volleyball courts, playground equipment. We had site #53, which was waterfront and had a view of the fishing pier. We plan to return someday. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here from May 3 through May 7. This park is beautiful. SO many lakefront sites. We and our friends had sites 116 & 117. They weren't real close to the lake but we still could see it from our campsites. Our site wasn't quite level enough for our length. We had to manually level the front jacks because the pad had a slight incline. Most sites are shaded. The campground is pretty hilly, so if you want to bicycle, get ready for some good exercise. There is NO AT&T cell service. Over-the-air TV is very limited too. We did not use the beach. I believe it opened on May 2nd. I wish the campground was open all year, like the COE campgrounds in Mississippi. It closes for the winter. We used our recreation.gov senior discount, which made it 1/2 off. Great price at $11.00 per night. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There are limited country restaurants appx 20/30 min away. On the way to a restaurant, we ran into a couple of closed roads due to recent flooding & because the area is so rural we had trouble finding it. We had to stop and ask local people how to get there & how to get back to the campground.

Overnight stay unreserved and arriving 5:30 pm on a Thursday. Walk in only and almost full. 2 sites left but nice one overlooking the water and it was a pull through. Several levels, and Park seemed to be quiet with families. Gate assistant very pleasant and accommodating. Would stop here again, disappointed we were just passing through. This is a great park on the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway. There are 141 sites, the bulk with views of the lake. We were on site 96 right on the lake, with launch access for our kayaks. The sites are all paved, and fairly level, and most have been recently updated with gravel picnic areas and all are mostly shady. Sites have decent distance between them . The bath houses were are exceptionally clean and very well maintained. You can tell the park was built many years ago, but it remains in excellent condition. No hiking trails in the area, but the lake (when it's not too windy) is a lot of fun to kayak. There is laundry available in the park. Each loop has a nice shower house/bathroom. This lake is great for boating/fishing/kayaking. Little to no Verizon cell signal- enough for phone calls and text only. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Tent Trailer.

Way above even our expectations of a Corp park. Rate reflects a Senior Pass. What a beautiful, water front, spotless campground. We had a terrible storm while we staying. One of the campround hosts came by our coach that morning to let us know that if there was a Tornado WARNING, they would be driving through the park blowing their horn continuously. What, really? How unbelievably wonderful. This park has 50 amp and water, no sewer. Dump site was perfect. Beautiful laundry room (shhh, only $1). This is a park that will cause us to change our future plans in order to return. We are retired and travel about 9 months a year. This easily is in our "top 10" of parks. The sites have grills, fire rings, concrete tables, picnic tables, trash poles, concrete borders around the crushed stone, and breathtaking views. The folks in the office are simply wonderful. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here two nights while traveling the Natchez Trace Parkway. The campground is about 15 miles from the Trace, out on a finger of land that juts into the lake. Many of the sites are on the water or have a water view. There are LOTS of trees, which is nice for shade but not so nice for maneuvering. We found a back-in that fit our 45' fifth wheel and HDT and getting into the space was challenging because the loop roads are kind of narrow. Some of the loops you shouldn't even go in (and we didn't) because the turns are too tight. The pull-through sites were nowhere near long enough for our big rig. Bathrooms were very clean. There were at least a couple basketball courts. Dump station was easy to access. We would stay here again, it was very peaceful and beautiful. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Many sights on the water. Spacious, quiet and relaxing. Our site is 47 and we are sitting on a small peninsula ten feet from the water. The campground is a bit removed from highway but the roads in were excellent. All the facilities are in great shape. They have a laundry, swimming area and boating. Rest rooms are very clean. They maintain the campground very well. It shows they take pride in making this campground special. For $12/night on the water it is hard to beat. We extended our stay an extra night. This campground is off the charts. We camped at Piney Grove COE in a Travel Trailer.

We have been coming here for almost 20 years for a family reunion about 20 miles away and are well acquainted with the area. We usually park in a different part of the part, but our normal section was closed until mid May for site upgrades. Our site was satisfactory, but the roads were narrow and quite hilly. If you want to get away, and I mean away, and sit on a peaceful lake and unwind, this is your place. I planned to stay 7 nights here and it turned into 11 because it was so beautiful. The campground closes on Nov 15 and they were on a walk-up system during my stay. They have park volunteers that man the gates and check people in. You go pick your spot and then go pay. During this walk-up part of the season, they do NOT take credit cards. You have to pay by check or by cash. They were only about 10% full so I had my pick of spots. The nearest amenities are a good 40 min drive so you better be ready to kick your feet up and do nothing. The lakeside sites could not have been better. Backed up right to the lake. Kayaking was great...the water clean and clear. There's only 1 hiking trail here near the entrance and it's short but there's another state park (Tishomingo) which has plenty of trails. It was about 5 miles. There is a nice swimming beach for summer times use. They had newer showers and bathhouse for the swimming beach. Site accessibility (easy to back in, plenty of room, pull-throughs also available) - 5. Campground location (Way off the beaten path. Good roads in, lots of hiking at Tishomingo park nearby) - 2. Nearby amenities (Shopping 40 minutes away) - 2. Site Privacy (spacious sites not a lot of privacy though) - 3. Campground amenities (Bathrooms/showers decently clean. Laundry has 2 working washers and 2 working dryers) - 3. Dog friendly (Excellent walking loops and plenty of space) - 5. Activities (Water activities. Swimming beach in summer, basketball courts) - 3. Cost ($24/night for 50 amp W/E hookups) - 4. Staff friendliness (The park volunteers and rangers were extremely nice) - 5. Connectivity (Decent signal without a booster for both AT&T and Verizon with good download speeds. Terrible OTA. Only 3 channels..all PBS) - 2. Total rating = 3.70.
