We had a great time here at Big Creek. We were traveling with another couple in a motorhome and The staff was able to accomodate us in sites 121 and 122. One of us was able to pull in and the other backed in so our awnings faced each other and gave us a common area. We were here 4 nights. We got to visit the surrounding areas, participate in the rubber duck race at the campground (and won!), plus spend a day in the creek. The hosts are awesome and this is now our go to place when visiting this area. - wwebb58

From the moment I phoned to check reservations we felt like we were taken care of. The park was big, clean, well run and quiet! Wood available (for small fee) for nightly burning to complete the camping experience! - Chris_Ashlea
Sep 2017 - $27.00
We chose BCRV because of it's location near everything in the Arcadia Valley area, such as Johnson Shut-Ins S.P. (amazing), Elephant Rocks S.P., Pilot Knob, and nowhere near big-town distractions. The managers are super nice and have thought of everything. On the weekends they host a small candy bar bingo game, and rubber duck races in the big creek along the park edge. These things may not be important to you, but it does give you an idea of the effort they put into guest relations.
The entire place is super clean and well maintained. Camp store is well stocked with low prices. For instance, 20 pound propane refill is $15, ice $2, wood $4. Bathrooms and showers were large, modern, good pressure, and very clean. Laundry room large and clean with 2 washers & 2 dryers, plus book and DVD exchange. Meeting room available. Arcade with about 7 games. Outdoor game equipment for free loans. Large playground and whiffle ball diamond.
You will have to get a site close to the Wi-Fi antenna if you want to connect. When we did connect speeds were better than most campgrounds. Back in sites are well rocked and drained. The site drive ins are about 15' wide and I guess about 45' long, and then there's about another 15' of grass between lots. Lots of space behind the lots too. Very comfortable. Don't tell the kids: they have good cable TV! BCRV will be on our list to visit at least once a year. We think you will enjoy it too. - LesOrKim

Great place to get "off grid" the only location to get WiFi is at the camp store (FREE). If you hold your tongue just right you can get AT&T signal but Verizon is a no go. Large wooded sites (even the tent camping sites) with large level concrete pads, picnic tables and fire rings. We hiked the Taum Sauk Mtn trail a whopping 1772 feet MSL, and also cooled down at the Shut-Ins. - mecicon
Jun 2018 - $28.00
We have visited several state parks in Missouri. This was our first to Johnson's Shut-Ins. It was a terrific stay. The sites are separated by trees and a decent size grass area. We stayed in site 207 which is right down a small hill from the shower house. The Shower House was clean and the showers are very large compared to other state parks. There is no cell service or WiFi. We went to the Shut-Ins to swim during the day. Our 3 year old loved it. There are no Coolers or disposable drinks (water bottles) allowed as well as food. You can take a back pack and carry water in a non-disposable container. We did not hike very far into the shut-ins, so the path was easy to navigate. I do know the further you go back into the hiking trail you do have to hike with care. If you camp there is a separate area you are allowed to park. We will definitely be back. - midwest_misplaced

Let me start with this: if you want to stay in a park with wifi, cell service and TV, this is not the place for you. However, if you want to get away from it all and get back to nature, then this should be on your list of places to go. Johnson's Shut-ins is located in a very scenic area of the Ozarks and is one of my favorite places to visit. The park is extremely popular in the summer but doesn't get too crowded since there is a maximum number of cars allowed in the day-use area at one time. The campground includes restrooms & showers in each loop, bike paths, playground, amphitheater for evening programs and wifi at the camp store. The rest of the park has a visitor center, picnic area, hiking trails and the shut-ins, which is a wonderful place to splash and swim. There is a special parking lot for registered campers, so you have access to the shut-ins even if the day-use area is full and a line has formed. Or you can ride bikes on the path that connects the campground to the day-use area. We stayed in Site 203 and loved it. Trees separated the site from most of the others and gave us partial shade, but there was also an open, grassy area for playing catch. The river was closed due to high water, but it didn't bother us at all since there are plenty of other things to do. My only complaint is that the camp store is only open for a few hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and not at all during the week (it may be open more often during the summer season). So be prepared to drive several miles to town if you need supplies and it's not open. By the way, if signs are posted stating the river is closed due to high water, please stay out of the water. People have drowned at the shut-ins from trying to cross the river during high water. It doesn't matter if you're a strong swimmer; debris such as trees gets stuck in the shut-ins and can trap you underwater. - JeniLynne

This park is not very well maintained. Most sites do not have a fire pit or a table. Also horse poop, hay and cigarette butts on the site. It is very sandy so you have to be careful that you don't get stuck. We were able to get our A class Motorhome in a site, but it took us about an hour and a half to figure out how to get there safely without getting stuck. It is difficult to find your site because it's not real obvious how the sites are setup. With that said it's a beautiful place and the river is close by quite large rocks on the River sides. - dlupton
Aug 2016 - $35.00
We pulled in on a Thursday evening at 7:00. The office was closed (They closed at 5 which is early during the summer time at a campground.) their website welcomes walk in. There was nothing to note what sites are available to take. It was extremely frustrating. We had to wait until 9:00am the next morning to find out if we were going to have to move our pop-up camper. We didn't want to set up too much until we could find out. When the office opened she told us we had to move. She was not apologetic at all. When I asked if they have many walk ins she said yes. I asked how they are supposed to know what site to pick and she said by the map on the door. Then she said it must have blown off last night. She was clearly not telling the truth. They did not put their map on the door. I would have felt better even to get a sorry. The bathrooms were filthy and my husband found a used condom hanging from the rafters in the men's room. The price and camp sites were great so it is a shame that I won't be coming here again. - B3cky
Jul 2008 - $38.00
This campground was a mixed bag. On the plus side, it sits right on the Black River, which is crystal clear, and has gorgeous scenery. The campground rents tubes, canoes and rafts, and will take you five miles up the river for a delightful float trip back down to the campground. The campground offers free firewood, and has limited supplies in the camp store. It is close to Johnson Shut Ins State Park, which is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon swimming. On the negative side, this is definitely a campground and not an RV resort! There are no full hookup sites, and the dump station was difficult to maneuver around, messy and smelly. Lots of shade trees make the sites awkward for large RV's. Sites were sandy. There are sites for horse campers, and if you don't have a horse, you definitely don't want to be in one of those sites! It seemed to us that most of the people camping here were repeat customers for many years, and we felt a bit out of place as "newbies". The office staff weren't overly friendly, and didn't seem to care whether they had our business or not. We enjoyed the river, but if we returned to that area, I think we would try one of the other campgrounds. - shayerk

Oct 2018 - $19.00
As others have stated, this campground has two areas a couple of miles apart. One is designed for ATV vehicles since they have a great area for off-roading, and the other is for those with horses. I originally had crossed this park off of my list of possibilities since we don't have an ATV and we don't have horses, which I am allergic to. However, we found ourselves there when my plan to walk-in to another park close by failed when it was full. Lucky us! We ended up in a premium (to us) spot in the horse section that was in the woods, spacious, private, and all around beautiful. We arrived on a Saturday and most spots in that area of the campground were full, but come Sunday afternoon, we had the place to ourselves. There are plenty of trails here, but due to them being muddy, we didn't take advantage of them. We did drive by the ATV area, and if we had one, that would have been a blast. Overall, a very nice park with friendly rangers and staff. The only bummers were that this was not a Water hook-up (it was very close by to fill) and that the only dump station is located at the ATV campground so we had to drive a couple of miles to it. No big deal. - NovarroNomads
Sep 2017 - $19.00
There are two campgrounds in this park, the campground for those with ATVs and a campground for those with horses. The ATV campground has more amenities with paved sites and 50 amps. Since we did not want the sound or feel of ATVs, we chose the equestrian campground, about 3 miles away, with 30 amp gravel sites and pit toilets. It is much heavier wooded with very large sites and lots of quiet and privacy. We loved our choice. We were a bit concerned in that there was really very little park personnel presence. There are not camp hosts. Also the dump station is only at the ATV campground and you must go there when you arrive to register. Still, we would stay at this much quieter campground again. There is not water at each sites but there are water spigots scattered throughout the campground for filling a tank. We had good Verizon data and voice. Because of the heavy tree cover, we had difficulty getting DirecTV, but were finally successful in finding a hole in the trees. Most sites would not have satellite access. It was nice and dark and quiet at night. - TheJim
Oct 2013 - $21.00
We stayed on the horse campground side so there are community water spigots, vault toilets and 30 amp max only. But it is gorgeous and peaceful and private. Be careful picking a site near campers with horses (our neighbors had smelly ones and didn't compost cover their poop!) but such a cool campground. I'd be hard pressed to recall any more beautiful in late October. Definitely gave that deep woods camping feel. Nature at its best! For those looking for more amenities I hear the main campground is awesome but they are pretty much always booked up so reservations or early arrivals a must. - Katygee

Huge place, lots of space. An amazing adventure for our dogs, as there is plenty of opportunity for off-leash play. There is a beach and two other water access points for the dogs. Staff very helpful--they spent an afternoon troubleshooting my sister and brother-in-laws rig that had broken down. They also sponsor float trips, but we did not do any, so I can't comment on them. Only downside was the ticks. That's probably true any grassy place in Missouri. Be sure to use DEET on your skin and Permethrin on your clothes and also protect your dogs. Bring a swimsuit to the shut-ins and hike to the lower pool--magical. We'll stay there again if we're ever in SE Missouri. - JacknLorie
Jul 2015 - $20.00
Campground isn't right on highway which was great. You drive down a gravel road and are met by nature. Lots of trees and big sites. River is right there, so peaceful. Everyone was very nice. My only complaint is they could put a bench in the shower and bigger curtain where you undress. Better not be modest. - Kspam
Jul 2012 - $25.00
Beautiful area! Summer weekends get crowded with a party atmosphere. They have canoe and raft rentals for floating. The "beach" area is a great place to hang out at once the floats trips have shoved off for the day, it's an easy walk as it's part of the campgrounds. Bathrooms seem to be keep as clean as possible for all the people that were there the weekend that we stayed. Watch for lower hanging branches if you have a larger RV or motorhome. Sites appeared to be mostly dirt or gravel. - DDnDoug

What a pleasant surprise this campground was-- we practically had it entirely to ourselves. It was hard to choose a campsite-- they were all long, level and shaded, plus each one had a level area for a tent. In addition to the parking spur, fire ring and picnic table, each site had a counter height table with a shelf above that, all sheltered by a roof, where you could do your meal prep. There was no electricity or dump station. Vault toilets were located throughout the campground. There were several water spigots and some were threaded so you could fill your tank. The campground has a trail that lets you access the 12-mile hike/bike trail that encircles the lake. We used this trail to reach the boat launch where they had a nice shady, waterfront picnic area. Further down the trail (or accessible by car) was a lovely beach area that appeared to be locally popular. The beach restroom did have flush toilets and coin operated showers. The lake is 440 acres and has a no wake rule. There is also pedestrian access from this lake-front trail to the Trace Creek section of the Ozark Trail--- Missouri's long distance hiking trail. The campground has 39 single sites, 7 double sites, 9 walk-in tent sites, and 4 group sites. Some of these are available for reservation on recreation.gov. Our rate reflected the access pass discount, but there is no discount on the double sites. - midcenturynana

We stayed at the East campground in the B section. Overall a nice campground. The shower/bath house on the East side needs to be updated. There are only 2 toilets in the bathroom portion. The shower still uses solar to heat the water, and it is not very efficient. Luke warm showers at best. You can go to the west side of the river to the new bath house, however the showers were not designed very well. The changing portion is not divided from the shower and if your not careful, your clothes can get wet! We stayed here for 6 days and the only time we saw the camp host was when we checked in on day one. The park did get loud and rowdy, and no host anywhere to enforce the quiet times!!! No washing machine/dryer and no camp store. There is a small store adjacent to the campground, that is part of the local canoe rental. The bath/shower house should have been upgraded when the west side was added to the complex. No cell phone reception and no Wi-Fi and no TV station reception. Seems like I was asking people to slow down all week long as well. Don't know why it is so hard for people to follow posted speed limits in campgrounds. Children playing in the campgrounds and people flying down the roads, way faster than the posted speed limit!! Again, if the camp host would have been doing his job. All in all it is an average campsite. Could be a whole lot nicer with rule enforcement and some upgrades. - KentuckyCampin
Jul 2008 - $20.00
Nice campground. Can get loud on weekends. Right next to Black river, great swimming and family fun. Playground nice. New addition on west side of black river, but not shady. The East side has plenty of shade. The west side not hard to get in and out of, but pulling in and out of the west side can be tricky with larger units. Hard turn coming off of K highway into entrance and downhill. Overall, nice campground for the money. - KentuckyCampin

This is a NFS campground on the Black River operated by concessionaire. The campground is about 7 miles off the highway via a blacktop county road, the last mile or so it gets winding and pretty narrow, so don't drive fast on that stretch. My Senior pass garnered a $6 discount off the $20 rate. Water is available in front of the shower house, which could mean having to drive twice around the loop before settling down, unless you have a long hose or have a site next to the one of the 5 spigots scattered throughout the park. There is NO dump station so plan accordingly. Most of the electric sites are up on the high ground, few of those are level - I needed 3 inches of blocks under the drivers side wheels of our 26' TT and had to lower the jack a lot to get it level. The pads are wide enough so you can park alongside your RV; in fact you will probably have to, only a few were very long. The shower and restroom were adequate. If you don't mind spending a little more, there are 2 double sites with electricity at $30 a night closer to the river, although I didn't find any easy access to the river anywhere in the campground; the best access was from a small parking area 1/4 mile away across the bridge, though people with disabilities may find it a difficult walk to the river even from there. There were only 2 other sites occupied during our 3-weekday stay, we never saw a ranger nor any sign of the concessionaire, I just put our money envelope in the can. We had no ATT cell service . - Hickory Nut
Oct 2012 - $31.00
This campground has recently been revamped. It is near the Black River and a short drive from Johnson's Shut-Ins and Elephant Rock State Parks. Site #29 is very difficult to get into. Few sites are level but all are paved and spacious. Very quiet in October. We will go back to this campground. - Pat and Rex
