We were at our site for about 30 minutes and the hosts showed up to welcome us and give us maps and information. They pointed out some must see spots and answered our questions. We dropped our trailer and drove to "Twin Sisters" to watch the sunset. The next day we walked from our campsite to the bench on top of one of the mounds. Nice, short hike. We drove back in and stopped at "Cap Rock". The signage isn't very clear so pay attention to the other markers on the map and the road. It's about at the spot where the asphalt turns into a gravel road. We didn't miss the AC because it was plenty windy at night. We opened our windows and were quite comfortable. Our neighbors, while close were quiet and respectful. If you are limited on time and traveling through the Badlands, stay here and see pretty much the same kind of formations. According to the literature at the park, Makoshika means "bad earth" or "bad land". We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

No dump site at this state park. We ended up dumping at a KOA in Miles City since we were headed west after we left Makoshika. If you are headed east, there's a Flying J not too far from the park.

I'm from east of the Mississippi and I'm not accustomed to driving through a neighborhood, popping out into a large state park full of rock formations. Pretty cool rocks and tons of walking/biking paths. Nice, but difficult-looking, disc golf course, too. I'm not scoring it higher because $28 is a lot for no hookups, pit toilets, no dump station, and the only water was 1.5 miles away at the visitors center. The $28 is for a non-Montana resident. Our site looked like it had just been repaved. The whole park looked to be in excellent condition. Camp hosts were excellent, driving us to our site and then stopping by later to check on us. We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Motorhome.

Had to drive through residential area to get here, but what a nice place to boondock. Views that are breathtaking. Lots of trails to hike and things to do. Site 11 was very spacious, level and private. Would definitely stay again. We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Motorhome.

This is an amazing treasure of a state park. As you pass through a small Montana town you drive into a diverse and amazing landscape.

Aside from the beautiful landscape the camp ground was easy to navigate, clean and well maintained. Staff was courteous and extremely friendly. We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: September, 2015 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Have stayed here numerous times and for the area it is my favorite, but I'm fine with no hookups or showers . Always have stopped here late September to early October so the lack of shade isn't a problem, would guess it to be very hot in the summer.

Main reason I like it is the badlands vista and lack of traffic. I'm sure the fact that its well past peak camping season adds to this .

This campground or Sully Creek in Medora are routinely my first night from, and or my last night on my way home from an annual trip to the Beartooths, Yellowstone, Tetons, etc. We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Truck Camper.

This is a great vista, badlands setting and the views are great. The downside is that there is no water or service of any kind, except vault toilets. The RV area is asphalt with only one spot that has any shade to speak of and if that is occupied (which it was when we were here) you will fry in the other spots. It is horribly hot in the summer on the asphalt, but would likely be super in the spring and fall when the heat wasn't so oppressive. There are water pump jack spigots, but for whatever reason they were not turned on. Also, it is unfortunate that no one has planted trees to offer shade. The view is great, but you need to decide if primitive camping is for you, especially in the extreme heat of July. The primitive camping isn't bad, however no shade in the heat of the day is a booger. Were it not for that or if we could have been in the only spot with trees we would have stayed more than one night. We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Travel Trailer.

If you can go without hookups for a day or two, this is a great place to stay. Beautiful surroundings out every window. An excellent trail through the badlands. We camped at Makoshika State Park in a Travel Trailer.
