I guess I'm only the 3rd to write a review of this place. Overall impression is quiet, lots of shade, and no crowds. This use to be State Lands and now the town of Ayr is running the show. It's pretty much an honor box system as I saw no host and no signs of any representatives from Ayr. Roads gravel not very well consolidated and easy to get around on. Sites all were back ins and had plenty of shade. Some were more open. Grass and gravel with picnic table and fire ring. Sites weren't too close together. Pit toilets, dump station in town of Ayr (according to previous post) I did not see any water outlets but previous post stated they were there. Verizon phone and Mifi worked ok with one or two bars of 4g. There was no place to dump trash when we were there. The lake had been drained and they were digging it out again and going to restore the dam. It's best to think of this place as a "Deluxe Boondocking site". You have great 20,30,50 amp power and a place to go to the bathroom. I suppose the cost is reasonable for what you get but it seems a bit high for what you don't get. It should be noted that there's about 1.5 miles of dirt road or more to get to the park. The "or more" depends on which way you come in if you come in from the East on "Pony Express Rd" you get "more". Still we'd stay here again if we're in the area. We camped at Crystal Lake State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Rural park, lots of huge old trees, decent little pond to fish, acres of grass. Site was gravel, pretty level. If you want peace & quiet this is for you! About 10 miles from Hastings. Couple miles of good gravel road to get there. We visit annually. We camped at Crystal Lake State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Decent fishing for kids, bike or hiking paths. Site for 2day antique tractor pull & machinery with demos of threshers, etc, & parade.

Date of Stay: October, 2013 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

$15 per night was for a 50 amp electric-only site. The campground is managed by the Village of Ayr. The gravel roadway to the campground is about one and a half miles long. There are several water hydrants throughout the campground. There are only vault pit latrines in the campground. Spacing between sites is generous and most sites are level. There are trees in the campground affording shade to some sites while others are out in the open. There is a dump station in Ayr that you can use if you’re a registered camper or for a $2 donation if not registered. The campground is located near Crystal Lake (fishing available) in a sparsely populated area with very limited dining and shopping opportunities. Train runs nearby. We received two bars of 3G on our AT&T phone. We used our Millenicom jetpack as a Wi-Fi hotspot and it worked well. We got nine OTA TV stations including CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS. We camped at Crystal Lake State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.
