This place is now Rio Grande del North National Monument. Wild Rivers is the area where the campgrounds are. Camping in Wild Rivers was so relaxing we planned on 3 days and stayed 5. It is first come first served. Once you get a site you can stay for 14 days. Because it is off the beaten path it rarely fills. Sunday thru Wednesday RVers under 30 feet should have no problems. Tenters have more options and should be able to find a site most days if they are okay with short walk ins. There is only one pull thru and it will accommodate any size rig. Most of the other sites are easy back ins 25 to 35 feet. You will need blocks to get level and don't expect to get absolutely level. The sites are large-ours was 1/2 acre. Most are very private. There are 26 sites divided into 5 campgrounds. El Aquaje has 7 sites. It fills last, has fewer trees, with less privacy and smaller sites. However, this is where the only pull thru is located. La Junta has 3 walk-in tent sites. It is next to the day use area. Montoso has 4 sites. Big Arsenic has 6 sites--The 3 on the rim are suitable for trailers. If you are longer than 20 feet take the right fork. It circles around the rim sites. Do not take the left fork it will take you to a very tight circle with a tree in the middle and 2 short tent sites. Little Arsenic has 6 sites. Five are good for RVs and one is a walk in tent site. Each site has grills, fire rings, covered table and gravel. All very clean. We camped at Wild Rivers Recreation Area  (BLM) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Tios in Cerra has good home cooked Mexican Food. You can get a shower for $5 at Questa Lodge in Questa.. Very clean lots of hot water. Rael's Store and Coffee shop also has showers. The is a small grocery store close to the Dollar Store that has most anything you need. The Texas Red Steak House in Red River is wonderful. Lots of hiking in the area. Lots of shopping in Red River. The Vietnam Memorial in Angel Fire is worth the trip especially if you or someone you loved served there.

Very remote and quiet. Near wonderful hiking trails and nice road for biking. Night sky was amazing! If it had electricity and flush toilet, I would give it a 10. We had a very nice three days. We camped at Wild Rivers Recreation Area  (BLM) in a Motorhome.

The actual rate was $3.50 per night, which reflects a 50% Federal Senior Pass discount. This is not a campground you will happen across, but if you do go to the trouble to find it, you will be rewarded. The 13 mile drive from highway 522 is slow but is easy and all on paved roads. Do study the directions on the website as your GPS may take you on a "shortcut" down a gravel road. The campgrounds are laid out on short gravel spurs off of a 6 mile paved loop road. You will want to stop at the fee/information station as you enter the site. The map you will get is critical to being able to find your way around. In terms of sites suitable for RVs, there are 5 areas. They are as follows : El Aquaje with 7 campsites, La Junta with no campsites except a handicap site, Montoso with 4 campsites, Little Arsenic Springs with 6 campsites, Big Arsenic Springs with 6 campsites. Many of the sites are fairly unlevel, but they are all well-separated and beautiful. This is really a campground for smaller RVs. There is fresh water for filling a tank, but there is no RV dump. There are vault toilets. There are no campsites that can be reserved. There is a Visitor Center that is open during the prime season and when staff is available during the off-season. There are great hiking and biking trails. Our Verizon phone worked well. Our Verizon data worked most of the time if we used our booster. This is certainly a campground we will return to. We camped at Wild Rivers Recreation Area  (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Price reflects senior discount, sites normally $7. Pit toilets, no hookups, but threaded faucets scattered throughout campground. Sites level and very widely spaced. It's a 13 mile drive from highway 522 to the campground areas (there are several, but each just has a handful of sites) but it is paved all the way. Roads in the campgrounds themselves are gravel, but mostly in decent shape. Some were washboard. Campground elevation is 7500 feet. Scenic views abound. Sites have sheltered, covered picnic tables. Taking into consideration that this is a boon docking campground, it still deserves a full 10 star rating, due to the fine views, excellent hiking trails, and huge spacing between sites. We camped at Wild Rivers Recreation Area  (BLM) in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Wonderful place to camp. Our site had a covered picnic table area, fire ring and grill. There are several hiking and biking trails in the park. If you don't like being remote or possibly being the only people around in a very quiet area, you probably won't care for this place. There are only vault toilets (clean) and no showers. There is water available but not at the sites. Our site had million dollar views for $7.00 a night. We camped at Wild Rivers Recreation Area  (BLM) in a Motorhome.

One of the most beautiful spots in Northern New Mexico at the confluence of the Rio Grande and Red Rivers on BLM developed facility. Outstanding bicycle/hiking area. Very few amenities but there is water and restrooms available along with picnic tables and grills. Visitor center is well stocked with maps and experts on local animals and geology. If you like remote but accessible this is it. We camped at Wild Rivers Recreation Area  (BLM) in a Motorhome.
