Lucky I reserved a spot; on a Sunday night in early October, the campground looked full. I stayed in #9, which is non-electric but closer to the electric section than the rest of the non-electric sites. While the site was huge, it was also on a fairly significant slope, and it was tricky to level. Nevertheless, it is a very pretty spot with a private section of boulders to explore and privacy if you park facing the boulders. There was no one in the office when I arrived, and it looks like they have short hours, so plan to take care of yourself. No o/a tv or wifi, Verizon signal worked good but ATT data signal did not work. Beautiful quiet spot to camp. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stayed at this campground only one night, as we were passing through to Arizona. However, if we had had the extra time I would have loved to stay longer. The rock formations were fabulous and we spent the evening climbing over and through them. You can actually pull your trailer or rig right up into and amongst the rocks for a great camping experience (however there are no hook-ups if camping in designated spots within the rocks). We stayed where there were electric and water hook-up and it was very nice and clean. Quiet, dark skies, a wonderful spot off the beaten track. It is about a 30 minute drive from the Interstate in Deming. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This park is awesome. The full service sites are nothing to write home about, but they are nice enough. If you dry camp, you can get some pretty spectacular spots. The rock scrambling is fun. The hike to the mesa was nice, especially if you follow it up with a soak in the hot springs at Faywood. It was the perfect place to spend Christmas. Great find off the beaten path! About 30 minutes north of Deming, but totally worth the drive. The road to the park is completely paved and the interior roads are dirt and mostly (mostly) passable. For those wondering, there are 2 reservable electric/water sites (E-7 and E-8). E-7 is a bit narrow, so E-8 is preferable. There are 10 total electric sites all in the same area, so the rest are first come/first served. E-1 through E-4 are back ins while E-5 through E-10 are pull throughs. Every site has a covered patio table and trash can. They were all full when we stayed. The Pegasus North sites (15-19) are all boondocking, but also reservable. Site 15 is quite unlevel, but the rest are very level and can accommodate any size rig (18 is *gigantic*). The road to Pegasus North is passable, just drive slowly if you have a big(ger) rig. The rest of the sites in the park are also first come/first served and vary in size and grade from small to large and level to quite unlevel. Choose carefully before paying the iron ranger. The darkness is hard to describe, unfortunately the cloud cover didn't allow for stargazing....but it must be amazing. We'll be back for sure... We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

The electric sites were full when we showed up on a Friday; so we boondocked! Boondocking among the rocks was MUCH better than being crammed into the electrical portion of the campground which resembles a commercial RV Park versus a state park. Since we boondocked... no electricity, sewer, or water. Some boondocking sites are pretty unlevel; but we made do. Some of the roads going to these sites were bumpy/rocky/eroded. Verizon service is functional. If you can do it... Boondock. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed in E07, amazing park...quiet, isolated and hiking is relaxing ( not strenuous). An absolutely must do is the hot springs at Faywood just down the road. My wife and I rented a private pool for an hour just after sunset. Very private ,clean and amazing views of the stars while soaking in 102* water. Dump station at Valero in Deming is an easy do if staying for more than 3 or 4 days. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed three nights in an "Electric Site" (E-08) which included 30amp plus water (no sewer). The cost was $14/night plus a $12 Transaction Fee from ReserveAmerica. Our average cost all-in was $18/night. This is a beautiful area with great boondocking options for smaller rigs. Although we had a traditional campsite, we absolutely loved the park. We had a wonderful view of the rocks through our windshield as well as through virtually every window. Our campsite had plenty of space both in width and length (you don't have to unhook your toad unless you want to take it somewhere). Access roads and interior roads are big rig friendly. Our neighbors, camp hosts and CG staff were all lovely. The bathroom/showers in the visitor center are okay. Private shower stalls require you to push a button which gives water for 5 seconds so you have to keep pressing again and again in an effort to obtain a continuous stream. Having said that, the water is warm and there is decent water pressure. We received satisfactory signals for Verizon cell, Verizon wifi and DirecTV. Expect fabulous sunrises and sunsets plus a dark sky excellent for stargazing. You'll want to spend your days outside walking, hiking, biking and climbing on the rocks. It's a pleasant place to be and the price is right! City of Rocks is a solid 30 miles from the 10 frwy (Deming) but it's a very easy drive - pretty much 65 mph the whole way with virtually no vehicles in either direction. We reserved six weeks in advance which got us a 30 amp site. The CG was full the weekend we stayed which also happened to be Veteran's Day weekend. We look forward to returning one day and hope to stay longer next time! We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

We had a late lunch at Alisa's House of Pies in Deming. The food and pies are delicious. Alisa and her husband, Curtis, are hands-on owners, chefs and bakers. It was a delicious meal and we enjoyed chatting with Alisa and Curtis.

Internal roads are dirt and winding but easily driven with a big rig, sites are dirt, most were not level and could be a challenge to find a suitable site for a big rig. There are some pull-throughs, ours was level, some sites would not be satellite friendly. Staff were volunteers and not overly helpful, you have to go find a site and then fill out a self registration form (with exact payment amount) and put it in the vault. Hint, pick up the form prior to finding your site so you can fill it out on-site and then walk it back. T-Mobile/Tracfone cell service was non-existent on the North side and fair on the South side. The park was quiet. We would stay here again. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great place. Nice trails. Hot showers available at the visitor center. Most sites are first-come first-served but some are reservable. Only drawback is the is no place to dump your holding tanks here. You can drive back into Deming and dump them for free at Valero but that's about a 50 mile round trip. Would definitely stay here again but would limit it to three or four days. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed 2 nights and would have enjoyed a longer visit. We reserved a site with water and electric, which is $14 instead of $10 for boondocking. Roomy spaces, with covered picnic table and a fire ring/grill. The scenery is amazing, and the clear night skies are stunning. I thought our Arizona skies were awesome, and the New Mexico skies are equally as imposing. The place was busy for midweek in March, but never felt crowded. Only negative is the way some motorists think they are on city streets the way they drive. It can be dusty, so going at a good clip really stirs things up. This park is a real gem. We would stay again and again. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Motorhome.

We camped here a couple of years ago in an electric site. We now have a generator and came back to try a dry camping site among the rocks. It was our first experience boondocking and it was awesome! The campsites among the rocks are so beautiful and secluded. The night skies are so dark so you can see so many stars. There are so many rocks to climb on and many hiking/biking trails. The staff is very nice and friendly. Verizon coverage actually worked here; I was surprised by that because it didn't work well when we went 2 years ago. It wasn't a strong signal, but usable. For our first dry camping experience, this place was perfect. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We LOVED this park! Very limited hook-ups. We boondocked within the rocks, completely private. Reasonably level in a pull-through. This is a magical, magical place with a night sky that is nothing like anything we have every experienced. Nice bike and walking trails. Roughly halfway between Silver City and Carlsbad. Tips for other Campers:

While there is a very nice visitor center, there are no other services of civilization within a 45 minute drive. Come stocked for your stay. Only allowed to run generator from 7 to 10 pm (although given the time of year we didn't need to use it). Showers have very poor water pressure and water is quite alkaline. Can be windy and dusty.

City of Rocks is such a great park I can't imagine anyone disliking it. It's located in the most spectacular setting amid fabulous giant rock formations which can be explored to your heart's content. Although the hook-up sites (electric and water only) are out in the open and lined up all in a row, the non-hookup sites are tucked into all the nooks and crannies of the rocks, offering plenty of opportunities for privacy and visual delight. The only downside to picking your site is that the access to it can be bumpy and confusing. A few more directional signs would be most welcome!. The non-hookup sites are especially great for those of us with smaller rigs or tent campers. Big rig owners will most likely prefer the hook-up sites. Take your time and give the campground a thorough look-see if you can before you pick your spot. Most of the non-hookup sites are first come-first served. We arrived on a Sunday and were surprised to find most of the sites occupied. The strange thing was that we didn't see any tents or RVs at a lot of them. Turns out that many families come out for the day and by paying the day-use fee they can occupy a camp site. So if you don't find anything, ask the folks occupying a site if they're just there for the day. You may be able to park at the Visitors Center until they leave and you can have the site. Not sure if that's allowed or not, but it would be worth asking about at the Visitors Center. There are clean vault toilets around the campground as well as water spigots. Flush toilets and showers are available up by the Visitors Center. There are several nice trails to hike as well as a little botanical garden to stroll through. The Visitors Center is staffed with friendly knowledgeable folks. The only thing this park lacks is a dump station so be prepared to dump your tanks some. We camped at City of Rocks State Park in a Travel Trailer.
