Overall Rating:

The BLM's Orilla Verde Recreational Area has 7 campgrounds along NM 570 (paved 2-lane road). No reservations are accepted, but except on the summer weekends, you should be able to get a spot if you arrive before 5:00 p.m. All of the campgrounds are on the Rio Grande, but some have better views of the river than others. None of them have dump stations--you have to go to Taos or Espanola and pay $10 to dump at the end of your trip. Before turning on NM 570, stop at the new Visitor's Center and ask the rangers about the campgrounds and where to get water. The first two campgrounds you will come to on NM 570 have RV hookups--Pilar and Rio Bravo campgrounds. Pilar has no shade and no view of the river, but plenty of room for large RVs. Rio Bravo only has 4 sites that are big enough for 20'+ campers and with hookups, but features cottonwoods, shade and a view of the river. As you drive further north on NM 570, the campgrounds are less populated and require dry camping. But the views and solitude are worth it. I wouldn't take an RV longer than 20' into the 7th campground (Taos Junction), because of a bad road and curve. We stayed in the 5th BLM campground, Petaca. It has lovely adobe shelters, grills, fire rings and vault toilets. It is right on the river, so wildlife is plentiful. We watched a Golden Eagle attack a crow's nest and calmly eat his prey for about 45 minutes on the hillside right by the campground. Big horn sheep are common visitors as well as colorful warblers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, waterfowl, etc. Two of the sites in Petaca would accommodate our 30' camper. There is a water spigot, but as of May 30, it wasn't turned on yet from a very cold winter. We filled our fresh water tank at Rio Bravo before journeying on down the road to Petaca, then we were able to stay 7 days without refilling (2 people). If you enjoy dry camping and New Mexico nature with its sagebrush desert, afternoon rain showers and rugged canyons, you should love this campground. We camped at Orilla Verde Recreation Area, Petaca Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Taos is a charming town with great restaurants and shopping and only a 25-minute drive from Pilar. We enjoyed the food at Michael's Kitchen and Old Martina's Hall. If you are a bird nerd, Fred Baca Park has terrific birding opportunities.
