The park is quiet except for the train at night and the coyotes. If you have dogs the only grass is near the restrooms by the information station. Cell coverage was good(att). Not much to do in the actual campground. There was a concrete pad to set up on. Had quite a few ants around the pad. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

We were surprised when we arrived with reservations to find that ours was the disabled site (nothing online had indicated it was.) The ranger assured us we were perfectly fine to be in it, but I worried the whole time that someone would get mad at us (no one did, whew!) It was a great sight, the biggest in the park said the ranger, and the only completely paved one with a large ramada and picnic table area. We were glad to have it since the other spaces, while many big rigs were in them, would have been a bit tight to navigate. The park has restrooms, showers (clean, warm, but push-button with terrible water stream), free wifi, and OATV. There are just over 2 miles of trails in the park, including a cactus garden with identification signage. Our site was up on the hill, which could be quite windy, but had a nice view out the front, and I enjoyed watching the birds and bunnies start their days each morning. This park is close to Las Cruces for all your city or shopping needs. It was convenient to good hiking at both Dripping Springs Recreation Area and Aguirre Springs. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

Really nice little campground with nice covered rock patio in site 20. The cactus loop are all pull through with electric (30 amp only) and water. We had no problem parking in the the crescent style pull-through. Great mountain and desert views from either side of this loop.
I would have rated this park overall excellent if it had 50 amp service. We stayed two nights. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice park in the desert of New Mexico. Great views all around. Hiking trails were easy, but offered a great way to explore the area.No paved roads anywhere, lots of dust to get your rig very dirty.Park was very tight for our 40 ft motor home, but we got in and out with no problems.Cost an extra $14.00 to book online, would recommend reservations as park was full when we were there in the middle of the week. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Wonderful state park! Very well taken care of; the staff is excellent. We had a pull-through site that was long enough for our truck and 40' 5th wheel...we did not have to unhitch. Clean bathhouse and a nice playground. Dump station is clean and in a convenient location. Quiet at night. The only improvement needed, is better signage inside this little park. When we arrived, the office was already closed. I knew our site number, but the road wasn't completely clear as to which way to turn, so I ended up turning down the wrong loop and that loop was really tough to get our big rig safely around. We made it, but it was a (very) close one. Outside of that, it was EXCELLENT. The loop our site was in, was very easy to move around it. Definitely big rig friendly. Would most definitely stay here again. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great little park! This was our 1st stop of a year long journey and we appreciated the quiet and low key ambiance. We enjoyed some bird watching and walking around the area. Only problem was freezing water hose at night but it thawed by late morning. Now we know to disconnect when freezing temps are possible. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a little gem in southwestern New Mexico. Nice spacious campsites, covered picnic tables, concrete pads, water and electric, nice hiking trails. The camp hosts are friendly and the campground is well maintained. The only problem we had was at the dump station when we left. It was full and we could not dump. Other than making sure the dump station worked, our stay was very nice and if in the area again, we would definitely return. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Only 30 miles to Hatch, the pepper capital in the country. Had a wonderful lunch at The Pepper Pot which was featured in The Food Network Magazine. Cute town with pepper fields as far as the eye can see plus interesting shops that sell some incredible salsas. Definitely a "go to" destination.

Wow! $14 a night with water and power! That seems to be the going rate at the New Mexico State Parks. This park is located near the Rio Grande just north of Las Cruces. It is in the desert with little shade so a park for the cooler months. There are pros and cons. Pros: It's a great price for hookups. The sites are clean and pretty level and on a concrete pad. There is a picnic table under a roof which is also on a concrete pad. Each site has a fire ring. The views are great with mountains to the west and the east. The sunsets and sunrises are often amazing. The camp hosts and rangers are very friendly and helpful and the place is kept clean. The showers are clean and provide good warm water. There is wifi in and around the visitor's center. Cons: There is only one bathroom with water and showers, and it is a longish walk through sandy and gravely trails or roads. It can get dusty. The water saving devices in the sinks make the water hard to turn on. There are railroad tracks near the campground the trains run at all hours. On the whole this a good value in the Las Cruces area. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit Mesilla, Hatch and hike in the Organ Mountains.

We hiked in the Organ Mountains and had wonderful views and saw a great diversity of plant and animal life. Hiking here is a treat. We also took a trip the Hatch - "the chile capital of the world" which is well worth the trip for the local agricultural products. It's a neat, funky little town with some nice little restaurants; however, don't expect four star dining think down home cooking New Mexican style.

Stayed here two nights while visiting local area and White Sands National Monument. Stayed in new Cholla loop which has 50 amp service and water. Reservation site stats 35 foot maximum, but I stayed in site 26 in a 37 foot Toy Hauler. It was tight but doable. Staff was execellent, escorted us to site and helped me pull in. Nice campground on a hill overlooking the Rio Grande river valley. No shade trees, but pavilions at each site with tables. Dump station at visitor center. Note: Can be hot here in the summer. Would stay here again if we are in the area. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Small state park, clean and well-kept. Several hiking trails through the natural surroundings, some lead to the canal and dam, which is a diversion dam. Looked like they were dredging, so no water was flowing over it. Picnic areas are closed to car traffic during the winter months, but you can hike to them, very short distance from campground area. All the sites in our loop were pull-through loop-style, with a covered picnic table on a concrete pad with stone walls, and a fire ring nearby. Site surface for the rig was gravel, and kind of soft at the edges due to typical desert erosion patterns. Although we could hear (and see) the train, it didn't bother us. Other than that it was quiet and peaceful. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Just stayed one night, didn't look like there was anything around shopping-wise. Las Cruces is about 15 miles south for anything you might need. This campground is easy to reach from I-40, and right off of I-25.

Overall Rating:

This is a great little park for winter weather - but in August, not so much. Because there is no shade for the trailers and in August it is HOT, and I do mean hot, I would only stop by here again in late fall, winter, early spring. The grounds are very well maintained. We stayed in the Cactus Patch Campground - all pull throughs - with generous spacing between sites. Each site has a concrete patio with a half stone wall, metal covering, and placement of a nice large picnic table. The pads are also concrete and as of this writing the hook ups are only 30 amp, but they are in the process of building a few 50 amp sites. No sewer hook ups, dump station is available; other hook ups were well maintained and worked very well. Great water pressure. It appears that some loops have only port-a-potty type facilities and no showers. There is a much larger restroom across from the Ranger Station and looks big enough to have showers, but I did not go in to find out. There are several hiking trails, but all of the trails are very short in duration. If you are a walker/runner as I am, you will need to go out to the main road where there is a very nice "sidewalk" along the main road. The dam borders the Rio Grande River and if you look real hard you can see it, but the view is mostly hills and mesa. The stars are amazing and we did enjoy a very nice sunset. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Gravel roads, easy pull-thrus on concrete pads. Picnic ramada is concrete pad, covered, and sheltered w/half wall; nice touch! Signage for loops and shower houses are scarce or tiny. We got into the group but still able to turn around (40'+toad). Easy access to I25. With wind is dust, however. We camped at Leasburg Dam State Park in a Motorhome.
