Robert Moses is one of our favorite NY State Park campgrounds, and site #187 is our favorite site here. We really enjoy watching the ships entering and leaving the Eisenhower Lock from the comfort of our motorhome. The site is packed gravel and grass, but it is a bit off level but within the range of our leveling jacks. Our site had 20/30/50 amp power. We were here over the Labor Day weekend, and though the park was nearly full, it was quiet at night, at least on the Long Sault loop where we were. The nearby bathroom facilities were keep clean, and the family/handicapped private bathroom was a big help to us as my wife needs assistance showering. There are a number of hiking trails, both in the park and around nearby Massena, and a very nice visitors center with many wildlife displays and a large aquarium featuring native fish and turtles. There are several programs available for kids there. There's an Aldi's grocery store not far from the park entrance, and a Walmart Supercenter just a couple of miles further away. Massena has several nice restaurants, an a few miles east there's a Native American casino with a restaurants for nearly all tastes. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

A few hiking trails start from the Visitor's center. There is a new building where we could get a WiFi connection. No food in the park and only two grocery stores open in Massena, which looks like it has seen better days (lots of closed businesses). Park is very large but underdeveloped. Seems that NY Hydro has the best part of it. Went to the St-Lawrence lock to see a ship going through it. The park rules do not seem like they are enforced. Friday evening was loud music and talking 'til midnight!! Hydro dam and St-Lawrence lock visitors center are both closed since 09/11. Nice park if you have bicycle. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Travel Trailer.

Large park but didn't seem too busy - lots of empty sites. Great nature center, lock visitor center, & hydropower visitors center. Generally you stay by a body of water because it would be nice to look at the water from your site, but most of the sites don't have a view of the water because of the undergrowth. If this was cleared a lot more of the sites could have a view of the water (and the large ships traveling through the locks). I think it would also reduce the biteing bugs. Other reviews mention site 187 - it's not that great, but sites in the E39 to E51 are much better because this area is mowed and you have a nice view. No food available in the park and Massena looks like it is going through a hard time, lots of closed businesses. The staff appears to be all college students, the rules do not seem like they are enforced. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

September 26, Robert Moses State Park,Massena, NY, 1000 Island area, site 183 with electric, 212 sites, bathhouses with showers, dump station This is a huge NY State Park along the St. Laurence in the 1000 Island region. The Eisenhower Lock is located here. Observation areas for watching the big ships go through are located in the park. Two main areas for camping - Long Sault Camping Area and the Barnhart Island Camping Area. We had site 183 with electric in the Long Sault area. At the Marina there is a very nice beach located on the river. Waterfront and Prime sites cost more money. Out of Staters pay $5 more. Interesting park but they were working on some of the roads while we were there so drove on some gravel. Park will close on October 9. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

We actually had two different sites this time, the first one (175) in the wooded section of the Long Sault loop for two night, and the second one (187) a beautiful waterfront site looking out at the Seaway where the ships enter and exit the Eisenhower Lock, also on Long Sault, for an additional four nights. Both sites were quite large and well separated from the neighbors by trees and bushes. Both sites were electric only, the first 30 amp max, and the second 50 amp max. The first site had a public water spigot between it and the next site near the road that was reachable with our onboard hoses for tank refilling. The second site had a water spigot a few sites away in front of the bathrooms/showers. Since were here over the Labor Day weekend, the park RV sites were fully booked with just a few tent sites empty. Despite that, the park was very quiet at night, with just an occasional ships horn as they left the lock to be heard. The park has an very nice free nature center that's manned by a very dedicated volunteer staff, and is highly recommended. The center also has several classes, etc. for children that looked to be very educational. The Eisenhower Lock has a free Visitors Center with a three level viewing platform that overlooks the lock. It's amazing to watch 740 foot long ships squeeze in and out as they go up and down (literally!) the Seaway. The nearby village of Massena has a number of good restaurants, as well as grocery stores, a Super Walmart, and others. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are a number of restaurants and stores, including a Super Walmart, in nearby Massena. The park has a free nature center that shouldn't be missed, and the Eisenhower Lock on the access road to the park has a free Visitors Center and a three level viewing platform overlooking the lock. Ships are often locking through every couple of hours. The approximate schedules can be found online and at the Center.

Nicely wooded, park like setting, directly on the St. Lawrence Seaway. For registration follow the signs to the "beach" not "campground" road. Our site was private, wooded, and directly on the river. It was electric only, 30 amp, with a water spigot nearby. Dump station was available at exit. No WiFi and some over the air TV stations. It was quite enjoyable to sit down by the river and watch the big ships entering the locks. Would definitely stay here again to watch the ships going through the locks. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a Hannaford Grocery store right outside the road to the park. Downtown Massena has been hit by an economic downturn, but, on the major roads surrounding town you will find all the big box stores and fast food places.

Visit the locks, the Dam, and the Nature Center. The locks are an engineering marvel, the Dam visitor center has some of the best interactive educational energy exhibits, and the Nature Center will get both young and old back in touch with nature - literally! Fast Food: JRec Subs/downtown Massena had good cheesesteaks. Very tasty but a little skimpy on the portions for the price.

The other reviews have good descriptions of getting to the registration office, so check them out before getting there. Our site (187) had a great view of the Seaway and the entrance to the Eisenhower Lock. The view was so good that we pulled in with our motorhome, instead of backing in, to take advantage of the view through our front window. We saw several large ships pass by each day we were there. Our site was very long and quite wide, with plenty of vegetation to provide privacy. The restrooms were reasonably clean, although both the men's and women's showers had some mold on the grout that was unsightly. My wife and I chose instead to use the family bathroom facility that was mold free for showering to save on water and grey tank capacity in our motorhome. The bath facility was only about 150 feet across the street from our site, as was a water spigot for those needing a refill. The Verizon cell reception was excellent, with very good speeds from our Jetpack hotspot. There are a few local OTA TV stations available, with most broadcasting from nearby Canada, plus two from Watertown on the US side of the Seaway. Satellite reception from our site was excellent using our portable dish. There are numerous restaurants in nearby Massena, along with the usual big box stores, Walmart, etc. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you need gas and are heading east from the park, stay on Rt 37 to the nearby Akwesasne (Mohawk) Indian Reservation. The gas prices are always lower than the non-reservation stations in the area, and the day we passed through, the price for regular was 20 cents/gal lower. There's also a very nice casino on the reservation with a really nice restaurant.

Plenty of water taps on rings roads through the park, sites are clean mostly grass. This is a state run park. Main areas are large. Dump Station is far in another section of the park. Large beach. There are a small number of sites that have an excellent view of the entrance to one of the Seaway locks. These sites are electric only and are on grass - all of them are large and most fairly level. Water taps with hose connections and garbage bins are relatively close. Out of state campers pay an additional $5 per night. Signage in the park is very poor - to get to the office bypass the Campground road, cross the bridge and turn left. The visitor parking area at the lock is very large and you can "camp" there for a few hours if you want a close look at the ships. I stayed in one of the premium sites with a view of the entry to the locks. I was a little disappointed at how far away it was, but the view was good--just had to use binoculars to see the name of the ships. My premium site was enormous! Not only was it very wide, but I pulled off the road about 50 feet and still had 150+ feet to the water's edge, which was very nice. Also, good Verizon voice and data service. The only complaint I had was that a little gravel would have been nice on sites, and a water fill station with an attached hose would have been nice. Good bike riding to lock and around park. Be sure to follow the signs to go straight to Campground Check-In before you turn down Campground Road or you will travel miles out of your way on a bad road. Very few river view sites are available. Most sites are on grass and maybe over a curb to get in. The restrooms/showers need a serious upgrade & cleaning. Our site was $25 plus a $5 out of state fee and $9 Reserve America fee, so $39 which is high for an electric only site. The roads inside the campground were paved and very good. The location to the Eisenhower Lock is excellent and the lock visitor center will give you a number to call to find out when a big ship will come in to watch. The dam project has a lovely visitor center also with a great view. No TV reception but our Verizon Wifi worked. It was OK here, but we would check around for next time. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in the Barnhart Loop on a premium waterfront site and it was perfect. Lovely view of the river plus a tree lined sandy beach. If you kayak or canoe, they can be launched directly from the site. The campground marina can accommodate small john boats up to 35 foot or larger vessels. We enjoyed bike riding on the miles of paved roads. Definitely stop at the Eisenhower lock near the campground entrance and watch one of the ships go through. For a waterfront lunch spot, go to the Massena Country club by car or boat. The park employess were great: helpful and friendly. The grounds crew were constantly mowing or weed wacking keeping the park grounds well maintained. Some of the roads within the park were in need of repaving. A very quiet state park campground in the evening most campers were tucked in by 9pm. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

Robert Moses State Park is one of NY's best in my opinion. If select you select one of the sites with frontage on the St. Lawrence Seaway, you can watch the ships entering and exiting the Eisenhower Lock right from your campsite. Visiting the nearby lock in person (free) is even better though. The gravel sites are fairly level and spacious, and many are separated from the next site by trees and bushes, offering some privacy. The RV sites are electric only, but water spigots are plentiful and not far from any site. There is a two lane dump station that serves the entire park on the entry road, and that can get pretty busy on the popular departure days, such as a Sunday morning. The bathrooms/showers are clean and well maintained, and at least some include a separate family facility. Garbage is collected from multiple drop sites at least a couple of times each day. This park is very popular with families, and there are usually a fair number of kids and adults riding bicycles, or walking on the roads, so drive carefully. The over the air TV stations are few, and the heavily treed sites may be difficult for satellite service, but the more open sites should be OK. Our Verizon voice and data signals were about as strong as it gets, with a tower located within sight of our campsite. We have stayed here multiple times over the years, and we will definitely be back again. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.

Beautiful campground. Road in through tunnel a bit rough-go slowly. Everything was nice, but checking in was quite the process. 1st a long walk to where you register; then NY tends to charge for almost everything. Folks from out of state pay an extra $5, Saturday or Sunday add $4. Reserve on-line-$9. Just show up- $2.75; view water- $6; 50 amp= $2. Showers are free, but NY regulates the temperature. If you can put up with that stuff, the place is really terrific with mostly very nice level sites in both areas. We would return. We camped at Robert Moses State Park (Thousand Island region) in a Motorhome.
