May 2019 - $38.00
Campground was a little tight for our camper but we were able to get into our site without too much trouble. Site was fairly level and all utilities were good except fot the sewer hook-up. But I finally figured out that I just needed to adjust the height of the hoses and it worked fine after that. CG was conviently located for our stay at the outer banks and we enjoyed it. The free Wi-fi was not easy to connect to all of the time. But CG was very quiet and relaxing. Will probably stay here again when we are in the area. - dakota ev
Aug 2018 - $52.00
Super nice people. Tight for a 36'. Bring your tow or bikes, it is a little far to beach and town. We had our bikes so we had fun with those. Kind of far from town and it was very hot so if we had of stayed longer probably would have been a little bored. Sewer hookup is 45°, drains only fair. Would go back but only for a short period. - Jim and Tina
May 2018 - $26.00
We stayed here as a base for exploring Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The CG is off the beaten path in the Village of Avon (Kinnakeet) and is quiet. Without a pool, playground or other activities it is excellent for mature campers. The seasonal sites are scattered throughout and are well kept. Staff and service are excellent! Friendly and helpful. Shopping and services are close by. Access to the beaches and Pamlico Sound are a short bicycle ride or walk away. (5/15, respectively) We will stay here again! - Lou Casper

This is a very small campground. Most of the sites are permanent sites, there are very few nightly sites and it is very tight. The most I can say about this campground is that the owner is very nice, and the bath house was clean. It is just a parking space for your camper. There are no activities, no play ground and no pool. The price is good, at only $25 per night. - Carol & Mike Lawson

Narrow gravel roads, level grass sites with adjacent concrete patio. Utilities work fine. Bath facilities are old, but clean. Park is well maintained and quiet. Many full timers, but spaces appear well kept. Good dog walking areas. Cable good; wifi would not connect. Would stay again. - LoneWolf
Oct 2013 - $38.00
This campground was an acceptable place to stay during our stopover and visit to Ocracoke Island. Access through the gate into the park and along the internal paved roads was tight for our motorhome, as were the sites. The 50-amp service and water pressure were good. The site surface was dirt, fairly level, and it held up well as we departed after a torrential rain. The bathrooms, showers and laundry room were very old and in rough shape, although they seemed clean. Most of the sites contained seasonal trailers in various condition, mostly not so good. We would probably not stay here again. - LowesTravels

Extremely clean, very friendly helpful staff. Breakfast on Saturday morning and entertainment that night. Great place will go back again. - Tricia B

Apr 2018 - $20.00
This is a national park campground. You know what that means -- no electric, no sewer, no water connection. There is potable water widely available but the end of the spigots have been sawn off, meaning you cannot attach a hose to them. We went to the hardware store and bought supplies to rig up a system because we ran out of fresh water on day 3. Dump station on Light house road. About 100+ campsites. Fewer than a dozen campers the four nights we were here. There aren't any wonderful views in the campground, so it really doesn't matter which site you choose. We parked next to one of the toilet houses for convenience sake. Loop K backs up against some low scrubby shrubs. Everything else is wide open. Plenty of space between campsites - 25+ feet - but no screening. It rained hard one day, creating pools of standing water that took hours to dissipate. Try to pick a "high" spot. Warning: do not get off into the grass. It is soggy and you'll be spinning wheels. I would not want to stay here in July or August, with the sun beating down, no shade, and no hookups for fans or AC. - GordonsvilleGal
Jun 2017 - $10.00
As stated in other reviews this is a huge open field just in shore from the beach. Not as close to the beach as I though it would be. We camped in site K22 which is right by the beach parking and from the parking area it is still a bit of a hike (1/4 to 1/2 mile) especially if you plan to fish and carry equipment. I mistakenly believed you could have a fire on the beach (no campfires in this park) by the campground but no suck luck. The only place you can have a beach fire is on Buxton (or one of the other town's) beach right in front of the town. The parks was not crowded and very peaceful. This park has not hookups but does have bathrooms and cold showers (we didn't use either). We camped with a Yamaha 2400 generator and it was a life saver with the A/C running through the heat of the day (nice to be able to cool of after a hot day on the beach). Generator hours are 6am to 10pm. The night were mild (75-77) but very muggy and it helped that we faced the camper to the south to make use of the prevailing SSE wind blowing in through the screen door at night. Without the breeze and being in a camper with few windows I think it would have been tough sleeping. Overall it is a good campground. The roads and pads are showing their age but the pads are level. Lots of wildlife to see. I would stay here again but not June through mid-September. Just a little tough with the heat. One final note. The campground is open all night and while there are rangers making patrols there is the possibility of theft. 2 young guys in a site a few over from ours had their kayaks stolen. With such a big area and so few campers in the park it's very easy to drive through and steal someones belongings and not be noticed. - Joe J
Apr 2017 - $20.00
We arrived midweek early in the season so lots of sites to choose from. Site are in wide open field with paved roads and pads. Picnic tables and grills at every site but no fire rings (no fires permitted, just cooking fires on grills). Check in was self-service - choose a site, go back to building and fill out form and leave payment (NOTE: CASH ONLY - No checks, no one to make change in you're on Senior Pass (½ price). Sites are 90 degrees to roads so you end up driving on grass to fit on to site - if there's been rain, the grass will be rather wet. It was very windy while we were there and we had to change sites after a few days because the new wind direction kept blowing out the furnace pilot light. You are 1 ½ miles from Hatteras Light and there is a dump station w/potable water along that road. Campground is surrounded by dunes and marsh areas - no direct ocean view. Access to beaches is over ¾ miles depending on which section you head to and where in the campground you start. There are 2 types of bathhouses on the property. Larger buildings have toilets and sinks, while smaller buildings are showers (think tv show MASH type of showers). All COLD Water only. No hookups at sites but generators are allowed during the day. - yesmar

Sep 2017 - $28.00
Stayed here in our 21' travel trailer and enjoyed our time. We showed up after the check-in station had closed but instructions to select an open site and come back to mark it down were clear and easy to follow. Staff at the park was very friendly the next morning. We had a reservation(non-site specific reservations only) but there were tons of sites to choose from had we just showed up. The roads and some of the sites were a little tight for bigger rigs, but we did see some 30+ foot RV's and 5th wheels. Dump station is down the highway about 15 mins at the other NPS campground. Only a few small downsides to this campground. One, I feel like $28/night is a little expensive for dry camping. Two, if you are planning on going to do things in Kitty Hawk it is about 1hr 20mins drive from the campground. Lastly, the biting bugs here are relentless. Despite this we really enjoyed our time in this quiet, out of the way campground. - sjeuck
May 2017 - $7.00
Most National Park campgrounds have potable water fills and dump stations at their entrance, or inside the campground. The three Cape Hatteras campgrounds we visited decided to break with this pattern and place theirs at undisclosed locations, and not necessarily near the campgrounds. (Potable water is available from spigots throughout each campground, but I have been told those are not to be used for filling fresh water tanks.) Frisco Campground was less than 1/3 full when we visited in early May. The volunteer host thought the sites were too small, and the turns too tight, for our 35 ft 5th wheel and tow vehicle. We managed with little difficulty, but another foot of length might have been too much. To fill our tank, we had to go approximately 6 miles north of the campground to a location near the Cape Hatteras lighthouse where there was a potable water spigot and dump station. While the station's features were labelled, there were no directional signs to guide you to it, nor was it noted on the literature provided upon check-in. The volunteer who checked us in provided very vague instructions for finding it. Even a Park Ranger near the lighthouse did not know its location. - JackSchmotzer

We stayed 3 nights in site B18 which is not officially "Sound Front" but may as well be. The sunset was incredible. The night sky on Hatteras Island was amazing. The staff was friendly and helpful. Upgrades were ongoing to some facilities which shows that the owners care. The gaps to excellence were that one trip to the restroom late at night ended with no toilet paper and, Monday morning, the dumpsters were overflowing. I would definitely recommend this campground and will plan a future visit. - Andrew-Debra-1991
Apr 2018 - $60.00
We were in site C21, a beautiful site that puts you literally just feet away from the water. With a 15' 50 amp extension cord and two water hoses, we were able to pull in forward facing so we had a view of the sound out the front window. Without those accessories, you will have to back in. This CG is easy to get into and out of, and has good interior roads. No problems getting level. The major plus is the view. The major disadvantage is it was an hour or more away from most of the Outer Bank attractions we wanted to visit (e.g., 100 miles from the wild horses beach, and at least an hour from Kitty Hawk). - Thor MC
Nov 2017 - $40.00
expedient check in, choose our site on walking about the camp. for our 3 week stay. You can have anything from on the sound waterfront sites, to canal boating, to secluded. Camp is like my own, with several small sections that each have their own flavor. Away from but within minutes to marinas, ferries and beaches. Simple grocery and fishing tackle shop 1/2 mile south. many cable tv channels. little ota tv. - SDCampowneroperator

Jun 2018 - $55.00
This was our first time staying at this campground. The spaces are close, with a small "yard" adequate for a canopy and picnic table. We had a waterfront back in site, which is a canal, with FHU. Our TT is small so space was not an issue. The pool was clean and in good order, not too harsh on the chemicals. The bath houses were cleaned daily, and had ample supplies. There are three showers available and a large bath counter for getting ready or bed time. Very convenient to town and the ferry. Shopping and dining are close by. We love coming to Hatteras and we will definitely return to Hatteras Sands. - CLewis
Jun 2018 - $50.00
Stayed here in prep for taking the Ferry. Can you say "tight"? Our 40ft motorhome bareley fit on the site. Had to move heavy picnic table to get on site. All sites had table on the pad, protecting sites from something. Tent campers and motorhomes mixed together. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Probably would stay here again as most of the campgrounds on Cape Hatteras seem to be tight. - parduelay

We stayed at this park for 6 nights in Aug 2019. Our friends had booked two sites side by side. However, when we arrived, they had moved us to a site across and over one from our friends. (We were not happy about this). But after 2 nights, the site next to our friends became empty so they allowed us to move. I would recommend that they do not move campers who have reservations for 2 sites side by side just to accommodate someone who wants to stay an extra night. They were very nice in the office and helpful with any questions. The park is clean. There are some sites with shade but otherwise you are out in the sun. Our site was 2 away from the beach so we were happy - Joan Weesies
Aug 2019 - $55.00
We arrived in a monsoon and we had ten inches of rain on friday night thru sunday morning. Some of the sites in the middle of the campground were underwater but the long row towards the beach was fine. It is the beach and flat and the roads were flooded as well so the waster was coming in from the road too. It was down to travel in the middle of the road in some places. The campground it great and they moved a couple people to dryer sites. This is a great place and has good power water and cable as well. - John S.

Nice RV park with grass between sites but sites are very close to each other. Easy access to beach and is a family RV park with lots a kids and pets. - Bert338

First, I'd like to make it clear that the customer service here is outstanding! Every person on staff we interacted with was courteous and accommodating. This was our second stay at KOA Cape Hatteras. Last year I gave them a strong review but noted issues of neglect towards the sites. Unfortunately, this trend has continued. Many of the buildings needed fresh paint. The asphalt roads are severely degraded as are the camp sites. In fact, it's difficult to determine if the sites are gravel, or just decrepit asphalt. We had a pretty good rain one night. We woke up to find large portions of the grounds flooded (see photos). Mostly the roads, but also several campgrounds were covered for several days. There are playground features on the premises, but many are very run down. As is the dog park. First, it's small and narrow with no grass. It's mostly sand and weeds. Plus, they've jammed it so full of agility obstacles that it's impossible to play a simple game of catch with a big dog This could be a flagship resort. They have the right location and a great staff. And they certainly charge a premium rate. It's too bad they are letting the place run down. We will be returning to OBX, but not the this KOA . - Cyclist922

Excellent location away from the crowds around the Nagshead area. Expensive but appropriate for the area. On the beach which is great for beautiful morning and evening walks. Would stay there again. - JoeFred
Jun 2019 - $125.00
We stayed almost a week at this KOA. Had a great time and the weather was fantastic. It did get windy the last few days there. We had briars or something in the grass at our site and could not go bare foot in the grass at our site. It was weird because up near the pool they were not there. The Cafe there was fantastic. Great service and great food. Highly recommend eating there. Staff was great all week, and very helpful and friendly. Ice was only $2 a bag and the bags were pretty good size. Restrooms were great, plenty of hot water and clean. Air conditioning worked great in the shower and restroom areas. Pool was incredible. Very large and you could hang out and watch the kids swim comfortably. The only thing I would change is I was very disappointed with the office store. The selection of groceries was bad. I wanted a big bag of chips and they just had single individual size. I would make more of the office groceries and less trinkets. Especially since there is not a grocery store nearby. They did have beer and wine, but of course no beer I liked to drink. But very disappointed with the store groceries there. They had no cases of water, or even 12 packs of water. They only sold liters of water. I thought that was crazy you couldn't go there and by a case of water, or at least a 12 pack of water. I was expecting better. But a great place to camp. Can't get any better when you can walk to the beach from your campsite. We will be back, and of course we'll bring more water! :) - Jeff Hedges

A true destination campground. Got here 3 weeks after Hurricane Dorian and everything is up to par. Many of the local shops are shut down as the season is over, and it is early October. The site is right on Pamlico Sound with beautiful sunsets and fabulous views. All the amenities that one could ask for. An oddity here is that they charge extra for dogs and cable. If you get Ocean front, don't expect to see the Ocean. Dune are between the campground and Atlantic. - BWolfAR
Aug 2019 - $117.00
We stayed in site 335, a sound front site with full hookups. Being the last site on the loop, it was a little tougher to get in to than others, but no real issue.
The sound front sites have unbelievable sunset views. The campground offers wi-fi but they will tell you that the bandwidth is limited. It is, but I cannot ding them for that, they were up front with the limitation.
The sites are all fairly level with concrete pads and patios. Our site took all of the sewer hose we had to reach the connection. Power is good and water pressure is solid. Overall I would recommend this park. - General Houston
Aug 2019 - $90.00
Park is showing it's age from the wear and tear of being a coastal park. Roads though paved, need work. Sites tight between RVs. Power good, water pressure fine. Don't know if we will return. - Field Trip
