This camp ground is very close to my home, but we make it a point to camp there at least once a year sometimes more. It was one of our favorite campgrounds years ago when our kids were small. They enjoyed wading in the river, roller skating, and looking for rubies in the stream, and riding bikes. Our oldest first rode his bike there for the first time. My wife and I love to go back now to relive fond old memories. The store is staffed regularly and offers basic supplies you may have forgotten at home. Restrooms are always clean as are the showers. I've never seen them in need of attention. It can get cool up there even in the summer following a rain shower, especially at night. Generators are handy, no hook ups. Water is available on each loop from spigots, but is not available at the site. Great value, great scenery, and the people are usually very friendly. Can't recommend it enough. We camped at Standing Indian Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Drop dead gorgeous park! Right on the Appalachian Trail. Waterfalls, rivers, great fall color. No electric at sites; No water at sites. In the cool fall weather (dipping into the upper 20's) a generator is a must (which we didn't have). So, we had to pack it up and go to a lower elevation. Would be a wonderful 14 day stay with a generator. Seems like many sites would handle a large motor coach. Sites are level and have gravel and black top. Water can be obtained easily from the many spigots that are threaded. We camped at Standing Indian Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Wow, what a surprise! Very nice, quiet campground in the Nantahala National Forest. No frills, just quiet and peaceful. Five loops, each has a campground host. Beware of the recreation.gov website, however. I originally booked a site in loop 5 which obviously couldn't accommodate a 29' travel trailer. Reservationist told me it should accommodate a rig up to 55'. No way, the site may have handled a small pop up. Had to cancel and lost a $20.00 cancellation fee (that fight isn't over yet). Anyway, very nice campground. Will be back. We camped at Standing Indian Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The campground has 5 loops each with its own very clean bathhouse. Loop 1 is like camping in an evergreen forest with not a lot of underbrush. Loops 2-4 are located in a flat open area with more hardwood trees. Some of these sites have no shade. Loop 5 is on the hillside and the campsites are shady and surrounded by rhododendron. This loop has a gravel road and is suited for tent camping. There is also a group camping area located off loop 3 with pit toilets and a large open spaces for tents. Each loop has a host and they were always friendly and busy making sure the campground is well maintained. There are no hook ups for electricity or water but there are ample spigots located through out the campground in each loop. There is a small store in the campground which kept regular hours during my stay and sold drinks, snacks, ice, firewood and other items. There are many trails accessible from the campground for you to enjoy and kids enjoy playing in the Nantahala River and Kimsey Creek. Many kids also had fun riding their bikes through the campground loops. The campground has a dump station located just outside the entrance near the back country information board. This was a very friendly campground and I can't wait to return. We camped at Standing Indian Campground in a Travel Trailer.

My wife & I have camped here since the 80's. Then it was all first come first served. Now since it got on the internet everybody and their brother knows about it so it's hard to get the site we always like or other sites. So we still just go up there and hope to get in. It used to be the greatest park in NC. We think the old bathrooms were better. I wish they would give pictures of the camp sites on their website like some other parks. Also if you have more than a popup don't get campsite #40. It's got a big tree in the center and trees in front so you can't back up. We have to say campsite #13 loop 1 is the best site in the whole park. It is real hard to get so if you ever see it on the net you better book it. We camped at Standing Indian Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This campground is family friendly, very clean, and management is very helpful and friendly. I have camped here many times and there are a lot of locals who camp here on a regular basis. Site 13 is right on the river. There are other sites that are very near the river or creek in Loop #4. The campground is loaded with Rhododendrons. Store sometimes is open, but has no regular hours, however, if you need something, the management is always around and are glad to open up to let you get what you may need. The campground has many hiking trails, and leave right from the campground and provide the option to do some loop hikes. The area is considered to be one of the best hiking destinations in the southwest mtns. The Appalachian Trail is nearby. The showers are kept very clean as well as bathrooms. No hookups, but this campground makes up for that in it's beauty. The creek and river are good for trout fishing. We camped at Standing Indian Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The best campground in the entire Southeast in my opinion. Th elevation is high so it's never hot in the Summer. Beautiful camp type setting among large white oak trees. A stream runs thru the place and the campers there always seem extremely friendly. Can be hard to get a site sometimes due to popularity. A great place to get back to nature. Very peaceful, quiet and clean. Additionally, paved roads means no dust. Would highly recommend. We camped at Standing Indian Campground in a Motorhome.
