Nov 2019 - $28.00
A very clean tidy well maintained campground. Parked amongst the sand dunes but even on the very windy day we were there the grasses etc. growing on the dunes prevents any sand blowing around. Only half full at this time so easy to navigate. We had no trouble finding a site that fitted our 28 ft trailer and Dodge Ram. We chose no services but there were sites with electric for $35. All sites were level and paved with well mowed grass between. Well priced campground for the area. - Kiwijo

Let's start with the good. Location, location, location. Situated right on the Atlantic Ocean it is a prime spot for beach lovers and surf fisherman. The rangers were very pleasant and helpful. Access to the beach is either walk over the dunes on trails provided or drive on with a 4 wheel drive truck. Once again, great spot for beach access and it's close to all the conveniences of Nags Head. Now for the bad. Power and water have just been added to some sites so that is great but the sites are pretty close, the roads are narrow, the sites are very narrow (like just wide enough) and they are way too short to accommodate most trailers and RVs. The rules state all equip must fit on the pad but almost no one does. Most of the site lengths are in the low 40' range. My trailer is (model 24') 28 and my truck is 20. No way am I fitting in a 43' driveway. To the rangers credit nothing was said about parking on the grass sideways in front of your trailer but lets change the rule or lengthen the driveways. 43' was great when there was no power or water and you were catering to mostly cars with tents and small pop-ups. You put in water and power and the big rigs show up and they don't fit. One other note, I received the discount for the power site through recreation.gov and paid 17.50 but the ranger told that is not correct and the discount is only for the non-power sites. She said they are working to correct it with the webpage vendor so don't count on the pass discount next year. One last note, the overflow parking and dump station are both across and down the highway a bit at the marina. Dumps station is not all that big a deal but if you have guest or a second car it's a little ways away. Bottom line is "will I go back", yes the value is just too good to pass up but it would be nice if they would just make the sites a little longer. - Joe J

A nice place - they are bringing electricity (20-30-50 amp) & water to the sites. We had one of them & it was nice to run the AC. A bit of a walk to the ocean but not too bad. It was a nice beach! The showers were acceptable but no heating past solar. Back in site. We fit with a big overhang in the back. With our dolly pushed up under the front of the 30' Class C we had room to park the Toyota Camry in front. There were no fires allowed. We'd stay there again. - becida

We thoroughly enjoyed our 1.5 week stay here. Because it was off-season, the congestion was minimal. The sites are relatively close, but not as bad as I had expected based on other reviews. Other than occasional road traffic noise, it was a quiet and peaceful stay. The boardwalk and views are fantastic, the bathhouse and laundry are perfect, and everyone we spoke to very friendly - especially the manager. No problems at all with utilities, and located ideally away from heavily-congested tourist sites. I recommend the dunes in Nags Head. They were perfect for flying kites and the views were great! I recommend this CG and wouldn't hesitate to return at all! - TennisDan

This is a small RV park, but very nice! We were there in May 2018 and paid winter rates. Close enough to Nags Head but far enough away to be out of the congregation. I. Would definitely go back. The only bad thing is if you have to cancel your reservations there is no refund but you can reschedule your days there if you choose to. - WHBarnwell

For us, The Refuge on Roanoke Island, served as a good spot to camp for 2 nights while we toured the area: e.g., Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Wright Brothers National Memorial, and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Lighthouse. We didn't spend much time in our campsite. It was a full-service, level, gravel/sand, back-in site, that was set along a paved path that looked out onto a very large pond/inlet. All overnighter sites were somewhat closely spaced, but all have a water/pond view. The bulk of the CG's sites seemed reserved for long-term or permanent guests. There was a boardwalk that ran the full lenght of the pond and led to a covered pavilion with a nice seating area. Note: Sites near the entrance will have to deal with some highway noise. No tree cover meant we easily logged into our DISH satellite service. We didn't log into the park's internet. Our Verizon hotspot had 3 bars. Price may seem high, but about average for the area. - Kona Boy

Staff/owners EXCELLENT. They helped us with ideas of things to do in the area. Clearly cares about the guests. Showers and toilets spotless and spacious. Sites are very nice for a destination that can be very crowded. Nice, well constructed pedestal. However, water is tie wrapped to pedestal. Convenient location cannot be beat. Quiet campground with clean grounds. - mlv

First Impression: Entrance at end of Marshy Ridge Road off Colington Road through a residential area is in very bad condition with serious potholes, humps and ridges. Sign on main road just after a curve - almost drove past. Safety: No concerns, quiet. Access: Off US-158, turn west on Colington Road at the traffic light (past the Wright Brothers memorial). If you roll past the DQ, you missed the turn. Colington is quite narrow but is asphalt in good condition. Not in Garmin database - use physical address. Office: One attendant. No store. Credit cards accepted. Online reservations not available. No discounts. Facilities: No pool, spa, fitness room or rec center. Small, clean laundry alcove. Restrooms/showers very clean, no mold, roomy, privacy curtains. No propane sales. No playground. No off-leash dog run. Campground: Not in a flood plain. No storm shelter available. Trees around perimeter. Interior roads are wide, gravel in good condition with gentle turns and no overhead obstacles. Big rig friendly. Long coaches will not have maneuvering problems. No tent area, yurts, or cabins. Sites are all very spacious, level, gravel, all back-in, nice grass everywhere. Pedestals at rear of site with electric 20/30/50; no meters. Adequate water pressure with good taste. Sewer pipe is 4" threaded, about 2-4" above ground level. No patios; usable picnic tables. No fire rings. Good satellite views. No cable TV. Free Wi-Fi but poor coverage. Verizon phone at 4 bars; 4G at 2 bars. No recycle bins. Noise: No railroad, aircraft, traffic, or interstate noise. Bug Report (early October): no insects noted. Runners: CG roads marginal for running (loose gravel). Yoga: use the grass for your mat. My Opinion: Score 5-Acceptable. Seriously overpriced. - StephenK
Nov 2019 - $50.00
Lovely small campground near OBX attractions and dining options. The sites are all back-ins and are big. One could have set up a badminton court between our trailer and the camper next to us. There are some on the water and all are arranged around a rocky outcrop atop of which is an old cemetery. The bathrooms are new and immaculate. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful. - uglifish

Mainly full timers in this park. It is located across a small road from the Atlantic Ocean so that part is great. The campground is all sand and can be soft, so you may have difficulty leveling your rig. Sites are super tight. No cable even though they claim the have it. Some good restaurants near by, also Wright Bros Museum. - Titansection104
Mar 2018 - $50.00
The man that checked us in was very helpful and friendly. The sites are extremely close together. There is hardly any room to sit outside of your site without sitting under your neighbor's slide. At least it was cold when we were there and didn't spend a lot of time outside anyway. The majority of the park looks like fulltime residents, with only a few campsites available for others. The location is great for visiting the Kitty Hawk area, I just wish they would give you some more room at the campsites. Verizon and AT&T worked well. - Love2Camp777

Staff really was over the top helpful with getting me set up an making sure we were taken care of. We actually extended our stay at a whim and he ensured we were good to go. We will be back. - Keith Goins
