During the summer season, all spots are by online reservation only and appear to fill up VERY fast once the schedule opens in March. Our early-May arrival meant that we could drop-in, provided we didn't park in a "seasonal" space. Can confirm earlier reports that sites are WAY off level. Our sewer connection was significantly higher than rest of site. Water turned off for a leak mid-stay. Park has an interesting process where seasonal campsites are set aside as being different from the 'vacationer / daily' sites on the map. Locals can place their RVs on these sites (determined by a lottery system) for the whole season at a reasonable $ rate, provided they visit at least once a week (ie, not just "storing" it there). But out-of-towner seasonals (ie oil/gas or seasonal park rangers) are specifically prohibited. Therefore, during the week the park "looks" full of RVs but there's few people physically there. Makes for a weird ghost town vibe. There is a convenience store, bathrooms, and an office... but all were still closed for the season as of mid May. There's a wifi router broadcasting its SSID but the park employee we interacted with said it rarely actually has internet service. ATT data service was very spotty at our site, so we were effectively internetless during our stay. There are two main areas for non-seasonals: up on a ridge with wonderous views of the lake -- but epic winds... or down into a more sheltered lower area with no views but more trees and nice playgrounds for the kids. If you're an out-of-towner needing to stay seasonally in the area, you're better off at City of Hazen's other two campgrounds. We camped at Hazen Bay Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Lake Sakakawea well known for great fishing. Knife River National Historic Site in Stanton (25 mins southeast of the campground) is a great small (free) National Park Service site that you probably won't ever get to otherwise.

Overall Rating:

Our site was on the end & quite large. We were in the new section overlooking the bay & our view was beautiful, especially the sunsets. This is all grass & not at all level, so if you go, make sure you've got plenty of things to level your camper. There are no trees, and it was very windy while we were here.

We were here mostly during the week & there was no one around, so it was very quiet. We don't have a boat or anything, so we just enjoyed the view. They could use a trash can here. We did not have any problem with our sewer hookup.

We would go back again if in the area. You can't beat the price for full hookups. I am rating our site a 5 for the view, but again it was very unlevel! We camped at Hazen Bay Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Not much around, but we did go to the Knife River Indian village which was extremely interesting & free. We also went to the Lewis & Clark interpretive center & Ft. Mandan. They were also interesting & we learned a lot. It was $7.50 a person.

Overall Rating:

Large, grass sites with plenty of room for boat, camper, and vehicle. Water and electricity were good, but most campers in our area had issues with the sewer in that our hoses wouldn't connect securely. Some sites had large ruts from tires, which caused a minor inconvenience for those campers. Access to the boat ramp was good, but parking for boat trailers was at a premium on the weekend. Verizon MiFi worked well as did our AT&T phone and Dish satellite. We camped at Hazen Bay Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a beautiful park next to Lake Sakakawea. Rate is the PA rate. Our coach has air leveling only and is automatic, so when leveling in the back in site assigned, the levelers lowered the rear of the coach so much that it severely bent our mud flap. We were essentially parked in a grass field. We had to be careful backing in as there were deep ruts from previous occupants, probably due to heavy rains. It rained while we were there, but we had no trouble driving out of our space. The "sites" were spacious enough, and there are no trees blocking satellite reception. The staff was friendly and courteous. We might stay here again, but it would depend on the time of year. We camped at Hazen Bay Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

We arrived at this campground on a Sunday as the weekend boating campers were departing. We had our choice of sites and there were fewer than five other campers during our stay. This is a public campground operated by the city of Hazen and by far the best place for an RV on the south side of Lake Sakakawea. It is about 14 miles north of Hazen and is situated in a scenic location above an inlet of Lake Sakakawea. The Campground Host told us the campground is full each weekend during the summer months. The spacious sites have mowed grass. A few can accommodate big rigs and most sites are not level. The site pad is composed of crushed asphalt and so are the access lanes. There is an attractive lay-out for the loops and a few sites come equipped with shade. There are about 25 full hook-up sites and they are with 50 amp. We had one of the few E & W with 50 amp. There is a bounty of recreational opportunity here including boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and birding. The night skies are dark here and we had absolute quiet here except during the thunderstorms. The campground accepts Passport America for discounts. The first night was nine dollars and 15 dollars for each additional night. We really enjoyed our weekday stay here. Enough so to extend by two nights. We camped at Hazen Bay Recreation Area in a Motorhome.
