Overall Rating:

This is a primitive forest service campground with good drinking water hot showers and flush toilets. There is a free dump station with your stay overnight and freshwater available in front of the pavilion The summer of 2019 they had excellent hosts everything was clean they had been trimming trees and bushes we had no problem getting our 40 foot fifth wheel and medium duty truck into the space we wanted. We saw several full-size semi's with 40 foot and 45 foot campers also in spaces if you know how to back in you will have no problem staying here there is also a pavilion and hiking trail. This forest service campground is not to be confused with the Buffalo gap Guest Ranch and Campground which is gravel in full sun. We camped at Buffalo Gap Campground USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $6.00
Overall Rating:

For a forest service campground, they take lousy care of their trees. They are overgrown into the road and hang way too low to clear our motorhome or probably any fifth wheeler. We were able to back up the one way road into the end site and that worked. Otherwise we would not have stayed. The park is convenient and at $6 is not bad, considering there are zero services except water is available. The sites are generally small but some are large enough for our 40ft motorhome or a large RV. They are not at all level, however, and some have pretty bad slopes unless you are tent camping or in a very small rig. The pad surface is very poorly done and won't take any weight beyond stabilizers without some large boards or other devices to really spread the weight. I've boondocked for free with better campsites. We camped at Buffalo Gap Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

See Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We found a lot better scenery and more wildlife in the north section than the south section near this campground. Find a place to camp closer to the north end. It's a 76 mile trip one way to the north unit.

Overall Rating:

This campground was a pleasant surprise. We were on our way home from Montana and didn't want to pay a lot to stay overnight. With our Senior Pass we paid half off or $3 for a spacious campsite in a very well-kept campground. There were probably 5 others in the campground, making for a quiet, restful stop. The bathrooms and showers were closed for the season, but it wasn't a big deal for us since we're self-contained. Would definitely stop again on our way through. We camped at Buffalo Gap Campground USFS in a Travel Trailer.

The second loop is closer to the interstate so you may experience some road noise.

Overall Rating:

This is a boondocking campground that is convenient for visiting Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit. With the senior pass National Park discount, the rate is $3/night instead of $6/night. We were a little concerned about finding a site that could accommodate our 43' motorhome and have decent Verizon service. We found that site 13, a double wide site, on the upper loop, accomplished both of these tasks for us. I think it could have been a challenge getting into and leveled in many of the sites - while they appear to be reasonably level side-to-side, they are very sloping front to back, hard for a long motorhome to level. There were some comments about no water here, but there is water in the bathhouses, and there are spigots around the campground (though they do not appear to have fittings for attaching a hose even for filling a tank). There is no dump station and no dumpster for trash. There is no reservation system, so you are limited to what is available when you get here - I think as long as you are not coming in Friday afternoon or Saturday that it is likely that you may find a site that meets your needs. We camped at Buffalo Gap Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park - South Unit. Take the ranger-led tour of Maltese Cross cabin. Drive the south unit loop and see animals and geological features. Get groceries before you come and arrive with your fresh tank full and grey and black tanks empty.

A great no hookups park that has easy access to Interstate and big rig friendly. Paved roads and paved site driveways. Sites have table, firepit, grass and some shade. No water or dump available, but an excellent park for location and price! We camped at Buffalo Gap Campground USFS in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: September, 2015 - $6.00
Overall Rating:

This quiet little campground is located near the Theodore Roosevelt National Park about a mile north of I-94 in North Dakota. There are about 37 sites total, each with tightly packs gravel pads. Most sites are level, but there are a few that could be a challenge. Every site has a relatively large grassy lawn, picnic table, and fire ring.

This is completely dry campground. There are no hookups (electric, water, or sewer) at the individual sites. There are pit toilets, water spigots, and pay-per-use showers, but water was not available at the time this review was written. According to the camp host, lightning struck the water pump in 2011 and it has not been repaired since. There is no dump station either, so dump your tanks and fill up on fresh water before you arrive. If you are solar powered, you are in luck because at least half of the sites are sunny.

Internet was a bit of a challenge. We were able to get 4 bars of AT&T voice, but no data. On Verizon, our standard reception was ranging between 1 bar of 1x to 2 bars of 3G, also with no data. Once we hooked up our range extender though, we were able to get a solid 2 bars of Verizon LTE and data that was fast enough to stream movies with little to no lag.

This was a great place to stay and we will stay here again the next time we are passing through on I-94. We camped at Buffalo Gap Campground USFS in a Motorhome.
