This was a lovely campground. There is no office. You make reservations online. Lake Sakakawea is the 3rd largest reservoir in the U.S. The Garrison Dam is a 2-1/2 mile long earthen dam. The sites are roomy. We had a site right on the lake shore with a full unobstructed view of the water outside our window. There are two loops. One has electric with water fill points and a dump station. The other has no facilities. There is no bathroom. Just two pit toilets. The town of Garrison is cute. There is not much to see in the area but the beauty of nature is everywhere. We camped at East Totten Trail Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This appears to be primarily a fishing destination. We were there before the high season, and it was mostly empty & quiet. We never saw an attendant, but because you book online, that wasn't an issue. The attendant was in a trailer on the Pike Loop, but we had no need. It might get busy and noisy at the height of the fishing season, but it was very tranquil during our stay. We were just passing through, so the location was perfect. There's some scattered trees, but in hot weather it would probably get toasty. And there's little privacy to speak of. But it's roomy, and I doubt even when full it would feel cramped. Our site was 50 amp, there's no water or sewer. It's very convenient to Highway 83, and the traffic noise was not an issue. There's not much nearby in the way amenities. there's a gas station at the entrance, but no nearby towns or restaurants. Overall, this is a nice way-point destination, and you might be able to squeeze in an evening of fishing . . . We camped at East Totten Trail Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $8.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here two nights in site 26 while passing through with a 27 foot motorhome and a tow car. Price reflects Senior Pass discount. Another well laid out COE campground. I was there in the middle of the week and had a site that backed up to Lake Audubon. Hardly anyone else there. Sites are gravel and level and easy to access. No shade at the sites on the lake and only a little in other places. There are two loops -- one with electric and one for tent campers. The tent sites were really nice -- some back in the woods and some right on the lake. There is a small but nice sand/gravel beach at the end of the primitive loop along with a small playground and there is also a completely separate day use area with a boat ramp. Sitting out in the lake breeze watching the white pelicans and other birds was absolutely lovely. That night the storm hit --25 MPH winds for 5 hours straight and the wind was aimed right at the campground. Between the howling wind, the shaking RV, and the crashing of waves it was rather a restless night. Suddenly the major rock bulkhead on the lake shore made sense. The family a few sites down in a trailer picked up and left early. Warning: if you need to fill up with water you need to take an immediate right after you turn off the main road into the campground to access the dump/fill station. There is a sign that tells you the location on the way out but not on the way in. I completely missed it. This is also the location of the fish cleaning bench. We camped at East Totten Trail Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is an easy access gas station with cheap gas at the entrance to the recreation area. The Audubon National Wildlife Refuge and its visitor center is just the other side of the bridge. The 8-9 mile scenic auto trail was beautiful at dusk.

Overall Rating:

This is a small COE campground on the shores of Lake Audubon. There are 10 primitive sites. The rest have either 30 or 50 amp electricity. Sites are adequate-sized. We fit boat, camper and truck on ours and still had plenty of room. Shade is hard to find here although they have planted trees, so that will change in the future. About 5 sites are paved while the rest are gravel. The campground fills up on the weekends, so if you want to camp here on the weekend, reservations are a must. There is plenty of availability during the week. There is easy access to fishing on both Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon from this location. Never saw the campground host, but the park rangers drove through frequently and were always friendly. We camped at East Totten Trail Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
