Visited late October for a long weekend. Convenient to grandkids in Athens. A few transient spots appear to be set aside for large rigs, mostly in the wooded Hilltop loop. Most large sites were occupied by seasonal units. Many smaller sites were available in other loops. There are many water supply hydrants located through the camp so several sites are within a 100 foot hose reach. Nice dog walk trail along east side of lake. Sites are primarily sharp crushed stone, closely spaced, most with a slight to moderate grade. Our site was featured with hickory and oak trees with falling nuts pounding the roof. Bath house functional but poorly maintained, windows open with cranks removed during cold temps, no toilet paper, infrequent cleaning. Close to US-50 so expect highway noise. Will probably return again to visit family since we are fully contained, based only on convenience to Athens. We camped at Lake Snowden in a Fifth Wheel.

Seems like a funky park. Lots of RV's that are parked for the summer, families come out on the weekend. Site was dirt, with a little gravel. When it rained, it got muddy. No pad for picnic table, so it was not usable, because the ground was wet, easily became muddy. No water at the site, just electricity. No problem with electricity. Did go kayaking on the lake. Have a nice beach area for swimming, with an awesome looking blowup "play area" (slides, swing, climbing features). We camped at Lake Snowden in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Athens offers plenty of shopping. We drove around and looked at campus. Interesting downtown area that is worth walking around. Ate lunch at O'Betty's Red Hot. Very good hot dogs with some interesting and excellent combinations of toppings. Small hot dog "museum". We happened to be there when the owner was working. We didn't eat till 2:30 PM, so he had time to talk to us, and show us around the "museum".

Overall Rating:

Most of the campers at Lake Snowden are "extended stay" and many spend the entire summer at the lake. Sites are available on a daily, weekly, monthly, and even a seasonal basis. One big draw for campers is the Ohio Pawpaw Festival that is held every year. It is a fun, family festival with bands, kids activities, and heck they even sell Pawpaw beer for mom and dad! The people are so mellow and fun here, it is a great time. The campground always seems quiet, even during the Pawpaw festival. The campers are respectful and adhere to the rules and curfews. This is a place to go if you have a boat. The lake is very pretty for the paddler, and the fishing is fun for the angler. The grounds are kept up well, and there are stores and gas stations close by. It is very close to Athens, Ohio and the historic Ohio University campus. A short drive to Athens will give you night on the town or a day full of fun at a relaxed and quaint college town From the web site: "Campsites are divided into 4 areas. The Locust Grove is ideal for those wanting to use the horse trails. Big Oak camp has some lakefront sites and is close to the play area. Hickory Camp is close to the camp shelter house and off the beaten path. Hilltop Camp offers sites on the hilltop with hot showers and flush toilets (vault toilets are located in the other camps). Lake Snowden is a 675 acre education and recreation park, featuring the largest of four lakes which form the Margaret Creek Conservancy District. The lake covers approximately 136 acres offering camping, boating, fishing, picnicking and swimming. The serene setting reveals natural beauty while maintaining the convenience of being just 5 miles from Athens, Ohio. The shelter houses, restroom facilities, beach, shoreline fishing holes, and fish hatchery make Lake Snowden a full-featured recreation park." We camped at Lake Snowden in a Tent.
