Important Note: This is an old campground dating from the CCC days in the 1930's. As a result it's very difficult for anything over 24' or so. I was able to navigate in a 25' Airstream with a Mercedes ML500 as a TV but there were some tight spots. The campground is situated in an old growth forest right on the Wild and Scenic Rogue River and Union Creek. There are about 95 campsites but it's so large that they are seldom close together. We could not see another site from ours which was right on Union Creek. Many of the sites have large stone fireplaces built by the CCC. There are many unthreaded water spigots and a limited numbers of primitive bathrooms. Sites have fire rings and fires were allowed when we were there. There is zero cell phone reception. There are two outstanding short hikes along the river: upstream to the magnificent Rogue Gorge; and downstream to the Natural Bridge. Also, there is a great little restaurant nearby called Becky's founded in the 1930's. Known for their huckleberry pie. And on the weekend there is a chuck wagon with outstanding BBQ. The south entrance of Crater Lake NP is about 25 miles. We have also camped there and we like Union Creek much better. Oh, and the fishing is great! We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Travel Trailer.

We have used Union Creek for many years. We stopped due to increased fees. The website needs updating as we couldn't find the cost until arrival. WOW $20 w/e site and half with Golden Age. Both camp hosts were #10's. There are now both reservation sites and first come first serve sites. We always use C13 or C15 as they have open sky for TV. We came to fish and caught 50-75 perch each day. Saw others with 20" trout. We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Sumpter, Granite, Bourne and several other towns have a "rich" gold and mining history. Baker City US Bank has an excellet gold display.

No OTA television. Extremely limited cell coverage unless down by the lake. Picnic table and fire ring were at the rear of the site so behind the RV. We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the dredge in Sumpter and eat at Mad Dog's Saloon. Baker City is 20 miles away with fuel and fast food restaurants. Visit the Chamber of Commerce just off the interstate for a great overview of the area. Oregon Interpretative Center is extremely well done and and an easy day trip from the campground. We also visited the museum across from the city park.

Park is set in the Pines. Quiet. Site was not level - ran uphill - although full hook-up, could not flush our tanks because sewer line ran uphill (very poor set up). 30 amp. Located too far off I84 - 20 miles - for our overnight stay. Probably would skip next time in the area. We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We planned to do some fishing and play in the water but it was too low to put the boat in at the campground. Nice facilities just low on water this year.

Nice campground. A loop is full hookup, B & C are Water and Electric only, and there are two separate tent camping areas. Camp hosts are on site and very attentive and enforce the rules (for better or worse). The trees are tall, so even spots without trees in the immediate vicinity could still get some shade. We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in Section A, which has full hook-ups (power is 30A). Originally reserved site A3 (last one available according to recreation.gov), but it was too sloped and we wouldn't fit. Checked with camp host and they told us to pick any non-reserved site so we ended up in Site A17. It is a spacious site with tons of room and a distant view of the lake. BTW the lake is down about 100ft as of our stay. Remote campground about 20 miles from Baker City. No OTA tv signal and only two bars of Verizon 3G at our site. You could go to the other end of the campground and get 3bars of 4G fairly consistently. We would stay here again. We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: September, 2014 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Golden Age Passport rate. The Forest Service maintains this CG 19 miles west of Baker City on RT 7. The CG is divided into 3 or 4 separate sections and A is the only with full hook-ups. Some sites are paved, most are not but plenty of room and privacy site to site. Restrooms are clean but no showers and no other amenities. Camp Hosts in each section are friendly, courteous, and helpful. The Phillips Lake is down to 20% of capacity for irrigation in the valley below. Boat launch is possible only at the dam, the ramp from the CG is high and dry. This CG is a pleasant surprise and is remote. Baker City is closest for services, 19 miles away. Shoreline Hiking Trail isn't any where close to the shoreline as the water is so low but it is a pleasant hike or bike ride. Lots of Pine Trees make satellite reception near impossible but cell phones are intermittent. This was a pleasant stop and we would return. We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Welcome to the Great Outdoors! This is a beautifully maintained U.S. Forest Service park located on Hwy 7, 18 miles SW of Baker City, OR. Bring everything you need because there are no conveniences nearby. The campground is at 4100' elevation nestled among Ponderosa Pines and just above Phillips Lake, which can be seen from several campsites. It is open May 1 - September 30. There is a 6.5 mile shoreline hiking / biking trail, a swim beach, a boat launch and plenty of fishing for trout, bass, and perch. There are 3 large reservable group tenting sites near the shore of the lake. There is no TV reception and satellite reception is questionable due to the trees. Our Verizon services worked well. The camp hosts are very helpful and friendly. Firewood is sold on site. We camped at Union Creek Campground - USFS in a Fifth Wheel.
