Well maintained park, lots of lawn & trees. Paved roads & sites, W/E & water at sites with dump station at front of park. Site #27 had clear sky for satellite reception. Camp host on site. Water pressure in the showers is a little low, & hot water is better described as warm water. Sites have good spacing and hedges for privacy. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

Paved roads and sites easy to get around in. Plenty of sites for large rigs, 1st come so some of the large sites may have been taken. Power 20, 30, 50 amp with water at site. Dump station on the way out. The showers were clean by the pressure was so-so and hot water falls into the almost warm but not cold category. Some nice trails that wander around the park. Your about 7 miles from John Day with has a nice little micro brewery with some pretty good food. We'd stay here again if we're in the area. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful state park on the John Day River. Grounds are well maintained with sprinklers running all day. Paved back-up sites are up 86 ft. deep with lots of room between sites and buffer of Oregon Grape in front of many. Paved roads provide plenty of room for easy maneuvering. Nearby John Day River provides splashing opportunity for kids and dogs. Nice trail that leads to a nature pond. Hwy 26 is close by so there is road related noise. No reservations so get here early. Check out is 1:00 and most sites are full by 3:00 even though check-in isn't until 4:00. No wifi, but had 4G with solid 4 bars on my Verizon service. One of our favorite state parks in Oregon. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Fifth Wheel.

We pulled in on a Saturday at 1 PM and got one of the last available RV sites as they are first-come, first-served. If you come in during the middle of the week you would have more to choose from. Site was spacious, with plenty of trees and hedges between sites. A really nice settings. Mosquitoes were a little onerous, but manageable. The wind was blowing and the cottonwood trees were dumping there seeds everywhere. Even though the park is right off US 26, it is quiet during the day to to relatively little traffic and silent at night. There is a river that runs along the park that is nice for a short hike. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is about a 30 min drive back on Hwy 26 and 19. There are some outdoor hikes nearby and the Thomas Condon Paleontology center is pretty cool. Drive the other direction on Hwy 26 through John Day then turn South on to county road 60 / Strawberry road to get to the entrance of Strawberry mountain wilderness area. Is a dirt road for about 8 miles but worth the drive to hike around Strawberry Lake.

Very nice. This is a small, well-maintained campground with an adjacent rest area. The 31 sites are very well spaced with some privacy in the form of Oregon Grape hedges and lots of mature trees and kept green by constant irrigation. There is also a river trail that runs the length of the park. While we stayed 4 nights, the majority of campers appear to use the park for just an overnight stay. Other than the river trail, all other activities (in the form of the John Day Fossil Beds, hiking trails, museums, etc) are some distance away. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Fifth Wheel.

One of our favorite campgrounds, especially in the fall. Best if you can get a site next to the river. US 26 runs past one side of the campground but it is not a busy highway. John Day is a few miles away and a pleasant, friendly town. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a small campground with water, power and a dump station. Sites are level with some being a little tight with trees and boulders. The hook-ups worked well and are placed in the proper area. This fills up early and has a constant stream of campers trying to get a site till around 7. They do have an overflow area for $10 a night. We camped here in a 40' motorhome. Outstanding. Smaller park with 50A and water. Lots of space between sites, almost park-like. Traffic noise on US26 dies almost completely by 10pm but can be intrusive during the day.

Great walking areas. Good showers, firewood is a bargain. One pull thru. Several sites are very long.

First come/first served, so arrive early or plan on dry camping in the parking lot. The park was full by 4pm on Wednesday night in late September.

Good ATT, two PBS OTA TV stations. Heavily treed, so folks were having sat issues in some sites. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

31 sites with one one pull-through; it is located just outside the gate, so if you want a pull-through and this one is empty- grab it.
There are 3 individual shower rooms(very secure)- at opposite end of the rest rooms- all very clean. Bagged ice machine at entrance- $2.00; firewood bundles at $4. Park is right along #26 highway, but it gets very quiet at night. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The road between Vale and John Day is a pretty drive, and this campground was a pretty place to stop for the night. There are not a lot of spaces to rent, but dry camping was allowed in the parking space of the"rest area" to the east of the park for a nominal fee, which also allowed those travelers to use the shower facilities, etc. Sites felt spacious due to creative landscaping between them.

A beautiful State Park, right on the John Day River. Several hiking trails available with easy access to the park. Water and electricity at each site and our site was perfectly level.

May well be the best park on our trip. Very well maintained, beautiful park. We only stayed one night but plan to make another trip here and stay a while to explore the area. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

WOW, WOW, WOW. One of the most beautiful places we have been in over 40 years of camping. Beautiful grassy sites well spaced. Long, level parking pads. Beautiful fall colors and a full river make this a top 1% park. Staff was friendly and helpful, firewood and ice are on the honor system. Park borders the hiway, but was quiet after dark. Verizon voice and data were very strong. We camped at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site in a Motorhome.

We love this park, it is so relaxing. It is certainly good for overnight, but is a great hangout for numerous days. John Day, OR is just a couple of miles away and has a decent sized supermarket. Showers are individual rooms. The lady responsible for this park takes extreme pride in its condition and cleanliness, grass was in excellent shape. No sewer, but dump station. They do have designated gray water disposal stations. We just can't say enough good about the park. I'm sure it is family friendly, the spots are very wide and generous. You have excellent separation from the neighbors. The river is on the back side of the park. Things might be a little tight for really big rigs. This is everything you could wish for in a state campground: big, spacious sites with lots of privacy, esp. on the perimeter, lots of trees for shade, clean restrooms with lots of hot water. It doesn't get much better than this. We intended to stay one night and stayed for four - wish we had stayed longer & we will definitely return. Tips for other Campers:

Definitely visit John Day Fossil Beds NM, about 39 miles west, and tour the Visitor's Center. We did not make it to the Painted Hills because of the heat, but plan to do it next time as we heard it was great. Nice scenic drives in the area in the rolling ranch land & forested hills. Not much in town, but there are a couple of gas stations in John Day & in Mt. Vernon next to the park.
