Been here many times over the years and it's a favorite. Love the easy access to the beach. Only 1/4 mile walk from Loop A. Longer further back in the campground, or you can drive to the day area. E & W only, clean restrooms. Verizon was ok. Agree with prior poster about trying not to get a spot on the main road in/out since it is a huge camp with lots of in/out traffic. Didn't use the dump, but for the 5 days we were there there was ALWAYS at least 3-4 rigs waiting. Better to dump elsewhere before or after. Great place to stay to access the central coast, but make reservations EARLY. It is almost always full in summer. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Truck Camper.

This is a nice state park right near the beach (1/4 to 1/3 mi. walk from the campground, or you can drive to an accessible beach access point). It's a very large campground with 225 sites all with electric and water. A single dump station is really not adequate for that many sites, but on a weekday we did not have to wait. The sites are very well spaced out. The best thing here is not to get a site "on the main road" since there is so much in-and-out traffic especially closer to the entrance. The inside loop sites back up towards the sidewalks to the bathrooms so go for those if you want to use the facilities. The outside loop sites are for those who use their own facilities or don't mind a short walk to the bath house. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There are some good walking trails within the park and of course along the beach too. There is a jetty you can walk out a ways on and two lighthouses in the area - the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse which is a BLM site requiring an entrance fee or a federal access pass. At the Y. Head at low tide, you can walk down to the tide pools and see some amazing sea life and seals too - whale watching in this area when in season.

This is a nice park along the Oregon Coast. You have beach access via several trails, but you must climb over a sand berm after walking on a paved trail. The park itself is paved however, all the inside sites have a 90 degree access so this makes it very difficult to back into for longer trailers as trees restrict your turning while backing. Also, trees are very close to road and larger and taller rigs must watch out for tree limbs. There is no sewer hook-ups and they have only one dump station, so be prepared to wait. There is another dump station in Newport at the Commerce Building about three miles from the campground, just for info. We encountered numerous squirrels and something to note; I discovered several of them jumping up under my tow vehicle. Upon further inspection I found they were actually eating the insulation from my engine firewall. I sprayed some WD-40 on this to stop them. A family member of mine had some squirrels at his house in Beaverton Oregon, not this campground, ate the wiring harness in his vehicle that cost him $8,000 and nearly four weeks of shop time to repair it. Just a point to make sure you watch these little critters, who might appear cute, can cause a lot of damage. Now I want to point out the only thing I saw them doing to my vehicle was the insulation, but certainly concerned about damage to other components in my vehicle. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There are plenty of places to shop and eat in Newport. The Bay Front of Newport is nice and has some eating places and small stores to look at. If you want to do some crabbing, there are piers and docks available in the bay. The Newport Jetty is also a place to go and watch boats coming into and out of the bay. Also fishing along the jetty is good.

Overall Rating:

Multiple loops in this state park, with a real mix of big rig friendly spots. We prefer the F or G loops for the larger sites, although if you don't mind the constant traffic, the sites along the main road are easier to get into with some having decent sized back yards. Outside loop sites are easier to back into with the angled drives, inside loop sites are mostly close to 90 degrees from the road. No matter which site, there are several low/close trees to watch out for, and unfortunately, we saw a couple of RVers hit trees/branches. Pruning of branches may be required to back in, or put slides out, just don't let the host see you. Still, this is a great park with easy access to the dog friendly beach, a few miles of walking/biking trails, and close to Newport with some great restaurants and good grocery stores. There was a heavy rain the night before we arrived, so our reserved site was flooded. Fortunately, we were able to move to F25 which was a lovely, large corner spot. The site we had reserved did drain by the next day, so drainage appears to be decent. We were able to get satellite reception from F25, but don't count on it due to heavy tree coverage. Verizon and AT&T were usable. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Very big, very busy campground - seems to be popular with large groups (mostly family and/or friends). Our site was right across from the hospitality center, so we especially noticed just how busy it was there! Some sites shaded, some not, none in deep shade - trees are largely shore pines, which offer little privacy. Great park for bicycles - extensive bike trails, plus all the campground roads themselves, and they rent bikes at the hospitality center (near entrance to campground). Lots of yurts, which were all full during our stay. (As was the campground itself.) Lots of park hosts in residence, who we found friendly & helpful. Because of the busy-ness and all the groups, though, we might choose a different location if we visit Newport again. Good location for visiting Newport and the stretch of the coast from Newport down to Florence or so, though. Bathrooms were kept as clean as possible, but were always busy. "Air showers" but had regular faucet handles, and there was plenty of hot water. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Our site was not really quite long enough for trailer & tow vehicle - we had to park the truck sideways (fortunately we could). Campground is under flight path to local airport (small planes & helicopters). Long waits for the one-holer dump station at check-out time.

This is a great park! Pros: The pads are asphalt, and the sites large and grassy. It is a short walk on paved or sandy trails to reach the beautiful long sandy beach or you can drive to beach at the day-use area. At the center of each loop is a large grassy area that kids love to play in with the friends they make at the park. There are miles of paved trails including one that takes you into the south end of Newport - great for walking or biking. At the Hospitality Center, you can rent bikes for $10.00 a day. Morning coffee (and sometimes donuts) is provided at no charge. There is a disc golf course and loaner frisbees are available at not charge from the Hospitality Center as well. While there is no wi-fi at campsites, there is a good signal and comfortable chairs for web-surfing at the The park is well maintained. The park is clean and well maintained. Cons: The only con I can think of is that there is no wi-fi at campsites but there is a good signal and comfortable chairs for web-surfing at the Hospitality Center as well. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

Huge Oregon State Park and campground located about a mile south of Newport, OR. CG has 225 E/W sites. Pros: Older, but well-maintained Oregon state park campground. Campsites an easy 5-minute walk to beautiful beach. Several miles of walking/biking paths. Less than a mile to Newport's many tourist attractions. Cons: CG that will likely require a reservation from mid-May through mid-September. Many campsites are deep enough to accommodate larger RVs and trailers, but not wide enough to offer a sense of privacy - especially on busy summer weekends. No sites with sewer service. No pull-through sites. Expect long waits at the single bay dump station - even on weekdays. Tall shade trees limit satellite TV access. Recommendation: Excellent CG for a short visit while exploring the Central Oregon coast. Heavily treed CG shelters most sites from steady coastal winds. Remember: even in the summer, the Oregon Coast has far more cool and rainy days than warm and sunny days. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I agree with the previous review. Some sites were angled and big rig deep. Ours was 90 deg with tree and post at entrance. Had a tough time backing my 29 foot tt in. Nice paved walking and bike trails through the dunes. Would probably stay here again. It was full some days so reservations recommended. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This place has no sewer connections and only 30 amp power. We were limited on options, so we chose this place based on reviews. It's an ok park, but it's not particularly pretty or otherwise appealing. The other patrons of the park were an interesting lot, to say the least. This park is huge, and it's close to Newport (a town by which we were not impressed, by the way). They have fire pits at each site and asphalt/grass, which was nice. We've driven past much nicer places in the area to stay, so if we had to come back this way, we'd probably only select this option again as a last resort. The bathrooms are nice, and the shower facilities are big and clean. There was also plenty of room between sites. There's also a nice shop in the park that's open until 8pm. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is hard to get a reservation at in the Summer, so was welcome to have chance at staying here. Part of park was closing, but found a site that worked for us. Level, an few low branches, hook up in right places. Campground has a lot of helpful hosts, and gazebo to rent bikes, info, and brochures. I believe Yurt rental is here too. Large park, disc golf course, lots of trail, and easy access to beach. Campground is behind the dune, so hidden from elements. Good size kids playground, good cell coverage. This would be a place to take family for week in the Summer. Close to the town of Newport, good bike riding, and a chartered fishing trips. I am for sure coming back. Staying here in October, we had our choice of many sites and the park was not crowded. We liked the fact that the sky wasn't crowded out by forest, and the open areas have playgrounds and room for kids. All the usual Oregon state park features, with friendly hosts and staff. Good Verizon cell/data and clear views of TV satellites with a portable dish. With only 30A power and water, the $31 rate (plus reservation fee) is on the high end for an Oregon park, and the November increase to $33 makes it questionable for a stay in the area. A "typical" Oregon State Park. Heavily treed, too much so, grass, paved roads and parking sites. Convenient access from major highway. Roads are wide and sites are east to access. Has 30 Amp power, water, but no sewer. There are "kitchen sink" water tubes located conveniently thru out the park. Free water fill and sewer dump is available. Has picnic table and fire pit. Staff is efficient, friendly and helpful. Bathrooms and showers are located throughout the park. They are well maintained and clean. No WIFI, no cable, ATT and Verizon good signal. Personal WIFI good signal with booster. Short walk to the beach with several access points. Would stay again. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Motorhome.

This wasn't one of our favorite state parks. It's in a great location and that was the part we did like, but what we didn't like is how crowded and noisy it is and how close the sites are together. We are used to having some sort of privacy at state parks, with trees and space, but this park was not like that. The sites are really close together and there was constant noise and activity all day long. Our site (B13) was right on the main road which may have contributed to the noise level, there were vehicles, bikes, and people constantly going by the campsite. I imagine it may not be like that during the off season, but summer was not the best time to be there for us since we prefer a lot more space and privacy. The paved trails that lead to the beach are very nice, and the paved South Jetty trail was also great for biking. We rode our bikes down to the Rogue Brewery for a tour and dinner one evening which was really fun. This park really is in a great location if you can overlook the constant noise and activity around the campground. Also, Verizon worked very well there. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This isn't our top Oregon coast state park, but it's fairly high on our list. It's a big park set a quarter mile or so back from the beach. It's in a setting of shore pines. They are attractive trees but don't offer visual privacy at ground level. If you enjoy privacy G15 where we stayed was nice. G14, A37, C11, E22, and G12 are some other nice ones. In summer every day felt like a weekend. It's crowded with people walking and biking through the loop roads. The trails felt much less crowded. There are 3 main trails to the beach. They start out paved. You will have to walk through some dry sand and over dunes to reach the beach. A walk to the south jetty and to the bridge/marina area is all paved which took us about 45 minutes. From this park you will hear a foghorn (we like). Garbage/recycling is all the way toward the front of the loops. Pet waste drop offs are throughout the loops at at trail entrances. We camped at South Beach State Park in a Motorhome.
