I was leery of this place based on the previous reviews, but decided to give it a try since most reviews were older than 2 years. We were not disappointed. Our sites were level and clean and quite spacious. Even the fire pit was cleaned out. Yes there were trains, but they are not that close to the campground and not that noticeable. Maybe 3 or 4 pass per hour. If it bothers you, sleep with the fan on. Most sites are seasonal. Everyone was friendly and there were numerous golf carts, but not obnoxious. We had no problem with noisy people past quiet time. Pool looked clean, but we did not use it. If you have a slide, it may take some maneuvering to back in so that you have close access to the hookups and still be able to put the slide out. We would definitely return to this campground. - JillaRoo

The river is beautiful, They should tear the campgrounds down and build a Beautiful Park.....But , If you don't mind being woken up by trains all hours of the night, having people and children running around yelling all day and night long, fires burning to 2 am or later, people in golf carts driving past and staring at your family every few minutes, a pool that has floaters in it, always loud and sometime's drunk neighbors within spitting distance, no working WI-FI on site, then you will love this campground! On the bright side, the Bathrooms are always CLEAN! If you don't mind waiting, but make sure you have money for the PAY shower. I believe You may be better off at the Walmart parking lot down the road, where you can get free wi-fi, and rest in peace. - wasteoftimecampinghere
Oct 2013 - $38.00
Waterside the campground, very aptly named, we camped beside the river, two days pouring rain. Hook-ups not user friendly and here's the reason why. Water 30 feet away, sewer capped to high. Cable at first was fuzzy, then came in crystal clear. Cell phone signal strong, WiFii not good here. We didn't use the bath house. Room for transients yes, but definitely a "seasonal's" park. Some sites really run down, others nicely done. On the battle between nature and "chachkas", the latter clearly won. If you enjoy the sound of trains, and hearing whistles blow, be advised it is constant, know this before you go. Not a family run campground, but employees are very nice. We had a "Good Sam" discount, but still a bit high priced. The Riverwalk was scenic, the Canal was just okay. They have a pool, reasonably sized, and a place for kids to play. Also, a picnic table and fire ring. It was a fairly roomy site so to me a score of "7" for Waterside seems just right. - prose4those

Nice campground. We were there on a Monday night and the place was nearly empty. We we told it was packed during the weekend due to a Penn State game. We were preregistered and the instructions posted were to simply find your spot. We never saw anyone working there and we were fine with that. All was clean and well kept. - mojomoho

We stayed during a conference at State College. Nice quiet park with a small lake for fishing and swimming. Ranger programs on weekends. 30A electric only at the sites. Water stations spaced throughout the campground to fill your fresh water tank. Dump station at the entrance. We were in site 47 which had a nice low stone retaining wall along the back. This gave a nice background for the fire in the evening (and a place for our cat to explore). Our trailer is 25' long and we had room to park the truck. (We had previously stayed in site 48 which has a slight uphill grade at the entrance but levels out where the trailer sits.) We like the sites on the outside of the outer loop because of the privacy they give you. - Wilco
Oct 2017 - $27.00
Nice small lake for fishing great hiking/running trails. 48 has a slight grade, but nothing hit bottom backing in, stay to the right for an evener backup. - 2labsacamping

Great spot to stay if going to the speedway, or fair. Reasonable sized spots. But the spots are not very level, and you will need a water manifold and long water hoses to use the hook ups. - acadiandave

Check was quick and easy, the workers were pleasant. They say they are trying to become more "big rig" friendly but failed to trim the branches at the entrance and along some interior roads. They only have a few long sites, all sites were very close together. WIFI worked good, power was good but water pressure was very low, difficult to take a shower. - Diablo
Oct 2015 - $35.00
The campground has some nice features. The bathrooms were a little old but very clean with pleasant touches and toasty warm with the cold temps outside. I would have rated the campground much higher, but for location. Our site was about 40 feet from a highway and we were in a hybrid trailer. The truck traffic on the highway was nonstop all night and unbearable. At times the camper actually vibrated from the noise. I suspect the noise would be dampened if you were in a hard walled RV, but I would still suggest asking to stay as far from the road as possible. We left after one night. As for other aspects, the sight was wide, almost level so not much correction needed. As for the look of the campground, it looks nice, lots of tree, pine needles etc. - TBrams
Apr 2013 - $38.00
We used this CG as an overnight, and it was all we needed! It was simple, nothing fancy, but a level site, quiet and a decent shower house. Would not come here to vacation, but as a one night stop you couldn't ask for more. Even had a host take us right to our site! - Spmalloy

This campground is very clean and well maintained. the staff is super helpful and friendly. There are many nice waterfront sites along the Juniata River. Easy access to the river for tubing, kayaking, canoeing etc. There is a nice dog run area with two sections for small & large dogs. We took advantage of the on-site winery. There is lots of activities for kids and a free shuttle to Port Royal Speedway (which we've used a couple of times). Planning to go back next summer. - PJS63
Jul 2019 - $80.00
We stayed at Buttonwood campground over the 4th of July weekend. The campground was full, but that was as expected due to it being the holiday. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I can't enough about them. When we arrived, we were directed to our site and the guide helped me to back in. The store was nicely stocked with most things that you would need. There were many activities to keep you occupied. We rented a golf cart to ride around the campground. Water pressure was excellent. The electricity did not appear to have any sags, which is saying something as everyone had their air conditioning running as it was hot and humid all weekend long. Our site was nice and level, we had a premium back in site along the river. My only complaint, and it's a small one, was that the fishing was not very good. All in all though an excellent weekend, We've already booked that same site for next year. - Tim W
Jun 2019 - $60.00
Campground was very clean and well maintained. We had a pretty large site but the fire ring was almost against the back of our travel trailer. First campground we’ve stayed at that you have to pay extra to use the amenities. Maybe charging a little more per night and losing the wristbands would make it more appealing. Both nights we were there someone was shooting off fireworks and had music very loud from 11pm-1am and again around 3am. Loved the wine slushies and proximity to the river. Not sure if we will stay again though. - WhitebreadA

Power was good, water pressure strong and constant. Buildings were very clean and large. We attended the COA Penn State Rally at this campground. Television is limited but Penn State University is close (ice cream factory). - tomas_grupos

The staff is extremely pleasant. The sites were a little muddy since it been raining so much. The transportation to and from downtown State College and the Penn State football game was awesome. the units are very close together. They do not have many 50 amp sites. - Psushu

Very well maintained campground. Nice gravel throughout. Landscapes nicely. Sites are level and roomy. Pool is very nice. No AT&T cell coverage or Verizon. Campground has WiFi by it is very slow and weak. In the middle of Perry county PA. Not much to do close by. You have to drive a distance to get to anything regionally. - Lspajm
Jun 2018 - $57.00
This campground is family oriented. Our grandkids enjoyed fishing in the huge lake. Lots of trails to explore if you have your own golf cart. Out site was shaded and it felt like we were in the woods. Beautiful and very clean. Friendly staff and fun activities for all. Highly recommend this campground. We will be back! - Kheath322

Our spot was not big rig friendly, even though a pull thru 50ft . In order to have more space between the road and your door, you need to be up close to the trees, however, makes it difficult to level with the drop off. Need 6"-8" blocks for front stabilizers. Watch being to close to the trees if you have driver side bump outs, be aware there are trees and foliage on that side. W/E in the middle of the site, double check you have enough line to hook up. #1 Host site, #3 difficult for long rigs to back in due to hill on other side of the road 5 & 6 are right on top of each other if your with friends perfect. #6 best to go in opposite direction to park, #22 very close to the road. 7-13,34, 36 going down/up a steep hill, hence leveling blocks needed. 40 floods. 8, 22,24,38 all pull thru and all face the road. 24/38 at least have some foliage between your door and the road. 42/43 FULL SUN, paved FHU spots, near bathhouse. - BRS-PA
Aug 2017 - $35.00
This is probably Pennsylvania's best-kept secret campgrounds. I understand it used to be privately-owned but was taken over by the state. The campground is on the side of a mountain but the sites are dead-on level. A new--when were there--bath house is immaculate. We've stayed there twice in a truck camper and now--having moved into a Class A Motorhome--will be back again. - Racer and Friend
Apr 2017 - $37.00
This time of year, the campground is self service. You must make advance reservations. We travel in a 40' motorhome towing a car, so we had picked a pull thru site. These sites are not really big rig friendly. They are not level. The best big rig sites are 1,2,34, 36 and 38. These sites are back in but they are large and level with water and electric hookups. There are also 2 paved handicapped sites near the bathhouse which are meant for folks with handicapped permits. The campground is up a steep hill from the main part of the park which offers fishing, boating, a water park, playground etc. As others have noted, these amenities are not walkable from the campground. A new and very nice bathhouse was built last year. - Pktva

This is a very old (think CCC and FDR) state park. There is no shower facilities nor flush toilets. Sites are various sizes. I stayed in the pets section and the sites seemed tiny. I had to park the trailer off to the side in order for it to fit and then couldn't use my awning. Site was also about 4 inches off level which used up all my blocks to level the trailer. Picnic table and fire ring ended up on the "wrong" side of the trailer so the table was rarely used. Site had electric and that was good and reliable. The park itself has a lot to offer. There's a lake and stream for fishing. The lake also has a beach for swimming. The hiking trails are great and plentiful. They range from easy level paths to a difficult, rugged, uphill trek to a fantastic overlook. The park rangers were very friendly and accommodating. Overall, not a bad place but don't expect any frills. Nearest town is about 20 minutes away and it has just about everything you may need. - Mike Opteris
Feb 2015 - $17.00
Hiking trails are very enjoyable. Turns are a little tight for big rigs. They had just finished doing some renovation near the lake. Fantastic people in the area! - SilverBreeze
