Overall Rating:

Our site was spacious, paved and mostly level, with ample crushed stone for the picnic table / patio area and a large space for a tent. Large trees provided good shade in the early morning and late afternoon. Water and electric supply was good, but there is no cable, WI-Fi or TV reception and the Verizon cell service was almost non-existent. We were able to bike over to the beach area and use our phones there to check e-mail so we were not completely isolated. Actually, it was relaxing to not have gadget distraction during our stay. We spent our three days reading and just enjoying sitting at the lakeside and winding down. This is a very pretty / scenic area so the drive in and out was enjoyable. Lots of fish jumping in the lake, so it looked to be a good fishing spot. Boat docks and launch ramp looked to be in good shape, so it's a good spot for a boat, canoe or other watercraft. The beach is small and basic, and life jackets are loaned for free. We did not have a sewer hookup at our site but the dump station was convenient and clean. It was very quiet at night, just the place for a nice, relaxing get-away. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Price reflects Senior pass. We were in Site #69, which was right next to the bathroom/shower/laundry building. Very convenient. The site was paved and long enough for our 45' 5th wheel and Freightliner, but the roads were narrow and recent rains had left the ground soft and muddy. It was difficult to back in without going off the pavement, not only for us but for others with smaller rigs. We heard from neighbors that the rangers had gotten the mowing machine stuck behind our site the day before, and you could see the ruts. I'm sure that's not an issue when it's dry, but be aware in the springtime that the ground can be VERY soft. The park is nice, lots of trees and spacious enough that your neighbors aren't right on top of you. No Verizon, AT&T barely. No OTA TV even though the stations are less than 20 miles away - we were in a bit of a dip, so that might be why. We would stay here again, would love to get into the water when it's a bit warmer. As others have noted, sites are unlevel - the longer your rig, the worse it will be. We had several of our 6 tires off the ground, but were able to level. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Very nice campground. We loved having access to the lake for kayaking, and the small pond was a wonderful spot to bird watch. The paved parking area for the car/RV were good. (Some sites not so level to begin, but we were able to get the RV level once in the site.) Some loops have WES, some only WE. We were in the WE section in Cove. We were on the right side of cove road, away from the lake, and the sites on that side were a bit harder to level. The sites on the left (lake) side of cove looked to be more level to begin with, so will probably select a site on that side next time. Nicely sized sites, you didn't feel crammed in with your neighbor. Enjoyed the graveled picnic table area, that helped keep down dirt in the camper and protected our screen room.

The water and electric hookups worked well. The bathrooms were pretty nice: new fixtures and looked like new paint on the walls. Plenty of hot water. At start of season, the bathrooms were nice and clean. Laundry facilities were great, only 2 washers/dryers, but they were pretty large capacity and only $2.00 a load. Very convenient and easy to do a load or so when the mood hit you. Overall, loved it here, will be back! We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Go to Corning for the Glass Museum and the Rockwell Museum. Kayak the lake. In the spring, go sit at the pond for birdwatching (and fox watching). The bike trail by Wellsboro. For birdwatchers, search out "the muck". PA state preserve, I think, on Rt 287 heading toward the bike trail. Hidden gem.

We were on site 86; the power was 30amp and the site did not have any afternoon shade but it was a wonderful site. Level, spacious, private, and clean. We were surrounded by very nice campers and during the afternoon we could sit behind our RV (in the shade of the RV) on the grass and look out at the lake and hills!!! it was beautiful. Many of the sites are short and some were un-level but a great place to relax! We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

Easy on-off from xpressway. Beautiful setting. Taking the long way around the reservoir, make a RH turn at bottom of xpressway exit, gives you a spectacular view and the road is freshly paved, wide and easy to navigate. Staff very friendly and helpful. When arrived the office was empty. Spoke to ranger on phone who informed us to go directly to site and volunteers would catch up and register later. The roads and sites are paved and easy to navigate our 43' motorhome. The volunteers helped us move from one site to another because we could not level. The site we ended up on, #25 FHU back-in, was beautiful with partial shade but our rear tires still came off the ground about 8". We leveled manually and were able to keep all tires on the ground but were not level front-to-back. Obviously when building the sites a lot of effort was put into each site except leveling the sites. We didn't find one site that was level in the park. The distance between sites is spacious and grassy. All utilities worked well. Plenty of room to walk your dog. The location of the park is great to visit Corning, NY. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

Stayed in Knoll loop # 4. Site had no patio and website did give notice. Best sites #1, 3, 5, #8 is best and #26. After #8 the loop goes uphill and no shade. Wifi is available at Kwik Mart gas station and Subway. If coming North on Rte 15, make right and then left at Lawrenceville and then next left when crossing into New York. CG is close to Corning and Wegmans. Biking is good along the Cathrine Valley Trail up to Watkins Glen. Fire tower access is great at Sugar Hill access. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Travel Trailer.

Senior 50% discount rate with Interagency Pass for an eight night stay. Site was paved, back in, FHU, 50 amp with vegetation between adjacent sites. Most of the sites are on a slope and require blocking. The trees blocked satellite TV reception. Verizon cell and internet reception was very weak at the campsite, but was improved with a weBoost signal booster. The park was quiet at night. During our stay the park was quite busy with many family groups. We would stay here again. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

Sites are very shady with most being located in the trees. Our site had the electric/water hookups on the top of a mound while the sewer was located close to the site. The patio/picnic table/fire ring was located up the side of a hill behind the site. There is a small swimming area in the park on the lake. Roads in the park are tight but manageable. At&T service was OK but we were unable to use our rooftop satellite dish because of the trees. One long hiking trails runs along the lake although its not very well maintained in parts of it. Not close to any grocery stores. We did not get on the lake but it looked very nice. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

The price listed includes a 50% Senior Pass discount. Tompkins is a beautiful campground located along Cowanesque Lake with fairly large sites that are nicely separated from the neighboring sites. Some areas have trees and bushes separating the sites for privacy, while others are in more open areas. The water, 20/30/50 amp electric, and sewer connections were well located on our back-in site (site #3) requiring a minimum of hoses and cord. Water pressure and voltage were both well within acceptable ranges. The sites have a paved RV driveway and a packed gravel area for the picnic table and fire pit. The boat launch and swimming areas are well laid out, and easily accessible. There's a 4 mile long maintained hiking trail with some good views of the lake and benches for resting along the way. The only downside we found that keeps this location from getting a 10 rating is the poor to non-existent cell signal for all carriers. That's not the campground's fault of course, but something to be aware of. We would definitely camp here again. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Corning Glass Museum and Rockwell Museum are both a 20 minute drive north to Corning, NY, and well worth a visit. Farther south is the "PA Grand Canyon" with great overlooks for viewing. Major stores and restaurants are fairly close by in Corning and Horseheads, NY.

This is a great campground! Sites are very well laid out, with only a couple of exceptions in the Knoll loop. I had a site overlooking the lake this trip and it was really nice. Quiet campers all around, although as it was early June and the park was not full. The only thing detracting from the campground is the road noise from the road on the other side of the lake. It's not a problem at night though. That's the only reason I don't give it a 10. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Travel Trailer.

Rate is for U.S. Senior Pass. Paved roads and each site has paved parking with a graveled area for picnic tables, tents and fire rings. Quiet area on COE lake. Lots of fishing and kayaking. Swimming beach is shallow with sand beach good for kids. Rest rooms and showers were well built but not too well maintained recently. Men's shower had no curtains so everything in vicinity got wet. Local roads poor for cycling with no shoulders, broken pavement and 55 MPH speed limit. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Rate reflects senior discount. Tompkins Campground is on the PA side of the NY/PA state line just south of Corning. Arriving at the campground from Corning is rather interesting. There is road construction, county roads, and more county roads. Once you follow the sign to the campground you wonder if you’ve accidentally turned onto the wrong road as you are on a narrow patched bit of barely-over-one-lane blacktop. After a short distance you cross into PA and the road improves considerably as you pass under Hwy 15. Then it deteriorates a bit as you travel the final miles to the campground. You might say that there are three different campgrounds. The best area is along the lake. These are full hookup/50 amp sites with a beautiful view of the lake. The next best area is on the hill away from the lake. Even though Cowanesque Lake is near by, you can’t see it for the trees. The sites, though, are big and mostly level with full hookups and 50 amps. The third area generally lacks sewer hookups and some sites have only 30 amps. It’s nice enough though, especially for weekend campers. Also, the pricing structure reflects the different levels of campsites. There are playgrounds, horseshoe pits, a laundry, and for the boaters a nice dock. The Corning Museum of Glass, Watkins Glen State Park (with wonderful waterfalls), and the scenic “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania” are all reasonably close by. There’s no park Wi-Fi and my Verizon cell hot spot barely worked (and that’s with a signal booster). If you are looking for a nice, quiet camp spot look no farther, this is it! We camped at Tompkins COE in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a very nice COE campground. Sites are paved and the lake is wonderful. The beach sites are coveted because they are on the water. The marina this year was leased out to a private company who not only operate it but have a lunch wagon and deliver ice and wood to campsites daily. Nice folks. Unfortunately the beach area is closed so swimming for young children is at your own risk. Seaweed has become a problem as well. Campers who have boats can moor them for $3 a night. Good bird watching - eagles and osprey especially. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground is excellent. We were camping in a grove of Hickory trees that provided lots of shade. The park attendants are very friendly and the grounds are well maintained. The only downside is the beach is closed because of zebra mussels. Boat mooring is only $3 a night for campers. A great lake to kayak on and lots of eagles and osprey to watch. Nice COE Park. The real nice sites were along the water loop with plenty of space and level. We stayed in the upper loop not quite as level and short sites for a 40' MH. Difficult runs to the utilities (long) needed 60 feet of electric cable to make the box. We camped at Tompkins COE in a Motorhome.
