We spent four lovely nights on Hunting Island and would have happily stayed longer! We've camped all over the US and have never stayed in a quieter full CG. Most of the sites, with the exception of those closest to the beach, are extremely private with vegetation separating each site. Mosquitoes are problematic, but are a small price to pay considering the sweeping dog-friendly beach. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The beach ranges from huge and flat to wild and full of picturesque driftwood with palm forests right up to the water at high tide. It's marvelous for walking! The lighthouse is a must-see. Plenty of good seafood restaurants on the neighboring islands!

I know this had hurricane damage, but it does not look like they have done one thing to fix the campground. The beach is beautiful. The campground was awful. We have a short 5er. It was so tight we had campers all around us helping us get in and out. Not newbies (been doing this 30 yrs) Site 195. All sites were a raise area in the middle of a swamp. Our site had 2 large stumps left 7 inches high we had to avoid also.. We would not have gotten in or out if it had been for help. One place in the road had ponding water. All sites in swamp. Saw multiple tent campers ran out due to water in their tents. Almost all site had water surrounding at least 1/2 the way around the site. You think both side would be equal. A large hole was under the water on the road enough to almost flip your camper. The sand in the sites are so loose, our front levels skidded off. This was not because of us. The sand was loose and bouncy. I spoke to a local. She said they wanted to keep it natural. A load of rock seems pretty natural. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK! The price for a day pass was crazy. Only the rich could afford that. My daughter and family had to forgo a hamburger meal b/c cost to visit us. We will never be back. It is the worst campground we have ever tried to back in 30 yrs. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We have not camped here in over ten years and I could not get over the devastation that two hurricanes have done here. Two loops all right on the beach with over 100 sites are no longer. 5000 trees were carted out of this campground and tree trunks are covered over with sand. It was a stunning campground and now it is still beautiful but different. We still loved camping here and there are still over 100 sites that are in three loops. One is more open and in the distance can see the ocean the other two have more tree cover. There is a store, lighthouse, biking around the park and on the beach, fishing, hookups, showers etc. This is a big birding area and we were lucky to see tons of birds in the trees around the ponds. Route 21 has a lot of traffic and a few bridges to cross to get to the island but is worth it. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Motorhome.

This campground was a nice surprise! We had a spot close to the beach path. There used to be a lot of sites on the beach but as other reviewers have mentioned, those were washed away with the hurricane. The bathrooms were clean and the showers were nice. The beach felt private because it was really only other campers on this section of the beach. The campground store was really big and it had a lot of stuff. The town of Beaufort was so charming. There was a Publix in town and a nice Walmart. We had no cell service with Tmobile but the ranger station had wifi if we needed to make a phone call. Sometimes you could pick up a bar or two of the wifi on the beach but not at our site. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is such a beautiful state park. We loved the way the maritime forest extends all the way out on the beach. The salt marsh surrounding the island is breathtaking. The effects from Hurricanes Matthew and Irma are still very real on the beach and throughout the park. For clarity, we are rating the cleanliness a 3-star because of the devastation on the beach and other walking areas. There is exposed piping, cabling, broken roads, downed trees, etc. which creates hazards that you should be on the look out for. I am not sure anything can be done about it without major renovations and cleanup efforts though. Do not let that deter you from this park. It is no less beautiful or enjoyable. The park roads are fairly tight on the back loop, especially for rigs over 30'+. You can see where many campers left their mark on trees where drivers miscalculated the turns. All facilities were fantastic and there are a lot of learning opportunities about the area, nature & wildlife, and history of the island. Pedestals were in good working condition and power was very clean. The lighthouse is one of the main attractions at the park and deservedly so. It is a 167 step hike to the top, but don't be intimidated. There are plenty of landings along the way, so it's very manageable. The view is well worth the ascent. We will definitely be coming back again! We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There are several great restaurants in the Beaufort area. Try Lady Island's Dockside Restaurant. It overlooks the salt marsh. The food is fantastic! Also, I needed propane while there and went to Grayco Hardware. They were SUPER $ on refills. They charge you for the weight of the tank too. I was charged $42 to fill up a 30lb cylinder. I'll make sure I am topped off before departure from now on.

Stayed one week, loved this place! Spot #104 was not level and had no sewer hookup, but was a short walk to beach. Visible signs of hurricane Matthew damage on the beach and in the campground, but that just added to the awe this place inspired. Hiked the lagoon and climbed the lighthouse; pier is still closed halfway out, so no fishing now. Nature Center, trails and boardwalks were very nice and walking the dogs was great; they're allowed on most of the beach, and both the front and back loops of the campground were wooded, shady and winding. Spot 104 was stone with a picnic table and fire ring but was low at the road and there was a massive lake after a night of rain. We were able to navigate around it. Wifi was not good, but Verizon signal was great, so we relied on the JetPack. Even got a large handful of OTA television channels. We could hear the ocean day and night. Saw alligators in nearby Hilton Head, visited the antebellum homes of Beaufort, walked the beach endlessly, took about a million pictures. Saw deer twice right near our spot and on the beach. I would definitely visit again, but I think I would get a spot on the back loop, they seem a little more private and sheltered from the winds. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Motorhome.

We ate at Johnson Creek Tavern near the state park (everything is deep fried, but oh so deliciously fresh). Their batter was delicious, but the draft beer was horrifically expensive ($7 for a pint of IPA).

We really enjoyed this campground. The facilities were clean and well-appointed. The systems (electrical/water) seemed brand new. There is a very nice playground available for kids, as well as one of the most well-stocked campground stores we have seen in a State Park. As others have mentioned, the sites right near the ocean were it pretty hard by the hurricane and are obviously in a state of repair. It is a barrier island, so nature will do as it will. We loved our site (#200) which was tucked behind a sand hummock so we were shielded from the beach breeze (we visited in November) yet near to the playground and bathhouses. Our site was very level, but the roots from the pine trees do make the roads a bit bumpy. The beach is magical, and the light house is fun and informational. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I love this park. The beach is wonderful, the area nice, the lighthouse fantastic, the staff very friendly and helpful, etc. We last stayed here about four years ago and it was one of the best parks we had been to. However, the hurricanes have taken a toll. The staff is working hard at repairing things, but it is a huge task. It appears they have replaced the electrical system as it looks and acts brand new. However, much more to do. Many of the sites are now so unlevel, that we saw RVers who had great difficulty getting their rigs level - bring extra leveling aids. The roads through the park are VERY rough. The water-side sites are gone and likely won't be replaced. Many sites are now a loose sand base, which gets interesting when it rains. We had to relevel after a rainstorm as it had washed away the sand underneath the tires. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying to avoid this campground. In fact, it helps to repair things by paying to stay here. Just letting you know it isn't as it once was and is a work in progress. After the initial shock, we set out to have a good time, which we did. Plenty to do and see to have a great time! Just be prepared for things to be different. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The pluses for this park: beautiful, clean beach. Nice facilities. The rest rooms and showers are clean, good park store, very quiet, dark sky at night, good wifi. The minuses: interior roads are a little rough, some sites very difficult to back into, no sewer, no cable (but OTA was pretty good). Neutral: employees. If you get site 121, it can only be accessed by going the wrong way around the park road loop. The office probably will not tell you that. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

I stayed at this park on a pretty busy weekend, but it was very peaceful and quiet. The park is right on the beach. The hurricanes wiped out the sites right by the water and won't replace them, but many sites have a clear view of the ocean. The only negative thing about this park is that the stuff that is no longer functional don't have any signs to tell you what's up. For instance there is a sewage dump station I was within 2 minutes of using that is no longer hooked up to the sewage system. Luckily, another camper told me. I asked about it at registration and the guy said, "I keep telling my boss they need to mark it because people keep using it." My daughter went into a bathroom full of raw sewage that was supposed to be locked up because it was out of order. The bathrooms that have been repaired are very clean and nice. I think they'll eventually get rid of the post-hurricane buildings and sewer stuff. Before that signs should be put up. I will definitely camp at this park again. It would be great for beach loving little kids and families. My site was 127 and it had a view of the ocean and was in a nice little private nook. The back of the site was completely private and there are no sites behind it. I was able to park parallel to the street blocking the view of passer-by people. You can drive golf carts around the park and they even have special golf cart parking beach side. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Motorhome.

There is a lot of damage from the hurricane. Many trees down. Several sites were damaged beyond repair and will not be fixed. But the sites further away from the water were nice. The grounds certainly took a beating from the hurricane last year. Many trees gone, underbrush gone, no more waterfront sites. Most of the sites lost the greenery which provided more privacy between sites. The park personnel was a mixed bag of competence and professionalism. The beach is still wonderful - 4 miles of sand and surf that is only accessible to the campground and day use visitors. Wifi is excellent. This is the first time I've visited in the summer, I usually visit in November and February, so typically no bugs. The mosquitos were very bad this time, so I don't know if this is the norm for the summer months. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There's a new Walmart about 15 miles back toward town, many small seafood stands/markets between the campground and town. A couple of restaurants within 3-4 miles that have pretty good food and atmosphere. Nearby is Camelot Farms where you take a horseback trail ride or board your own horse.

What an amazing campground and stunning views. When we camped, the park was booked full, even during the week. We had a second row to beach site. It was a smaller site and our 17 foot PUP fit just right. The water hook ups seem to have been run over a time or two, however were in working order. We did not use our fire pit as it was averaging in high 90's and low 80's at night - plus the site was not configured well for PUP bunk ends. Our bunk end was positioned over the ring. Not much privacy here at the park, but who cares, you're right on the beach. I know that Hurricane Matthew has now taken away the vast majority of the beach sites, but I will absolutely return to the park regardless. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Absolutely loved this park! It sits right on the ocean and the beach is never crowded because it is just for the campground only! The staff was super nice, check in was a breeze. This park is beautiful with huge trees and palms everywhere. The only caution I would give is that the roads through the park are narrow and curvy so take your time to maneuver through it. I will say that we have visited Hunting Island every year for nine consecutive years. I have always rated the park highly, but not this time. This park's location is incredible, but without serious investment by the state if South Carolina, this park will continue to degrade. The bathhouses are 10 years overdue for refurbishment. Due to ongoing beach erosion, when there are heavy rains (common in the coast) water will collect and flood many campsites. For two years now we have witnessed many tent campers have there entire site end up under 4-6 inches of water. The state knows these sites are flood prone yet they continue to rent them out to unsuspecting families who end up having to pack up and leave after a heavy rain. The roads need work and I would estimate 90% of the campsites need releveling to eliminate the low areas that hold standing water. The campground hosts as well as the Rangers and staff are top notch. They deal with so many guests dealing with poor conditions and should be commended. Hunting Island generates more revenue for SC than any other park, yet every year funds are withheld to bring the facilities up to date and renourish the beach. My family and I love this place, my kids have grown up here, but this may have been our last trip here until something is done to fix the problems. I really feel like South Carolina is simply stealing tourists dollars at this point and if they don't address the problems immediately, Mother Nature is going to reclaim this incredible campground. I hope the state will act soon. We camped at Hunting Island State Park in a Motorhome.
