We stay her frequently because of appointments at MUSC. If you have children, this park will have great appeal to you. Pro's; the park is clean and quiet, the sites are well spaced, great activities including walking and bike trails, fishing, water park and splash pad, just to list a few. Con's; The people working the desk at the store are some of the most rude I have ever encountered at a campground! When it rains, as it frequently does in Charleston, many of the sites are under water. There is a real drainage problem that has been this way for years and they never make attempts to correct the problem. Overall, this is a great park in a great location. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pull through spaces are huge. Navigation in the park is easy. There is a great dog park with a lake. Lots to do in the park and convenient to Charleston. Only downside is it is gravel and sand and pretty sloppy in the rain (and it rained for 4 days during our August stay). We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

167 Raw in Charleston is unbelievably good. Fig, Trattoria Luca, the Ordinary all great. If you can't find great food in Charleston, you're not trying very hard. Vicious Biscuit in Mount Pleasant a great breakfast or lunch. While there, stop at House of Brews for a good selection of local craft beer.

The park is quiet and very family friendly. Bring a bicycle to get around to the playground, picnic areas and splash pad. No cable hook up and slow WiFi, so bring old fashioned fun. We enjoyed disconnecting for a couple days. The water park is awesome for kids. Spacious sites with nice concrete patio, new picnic table and fire ring at each site. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a very nice campground with a ton of walking, and biking trails. Most campsites are full Hook Ups except for the row we were on, so check that if you need FHU. There is a splash park with slides and lazy river and they also rent bikes, pedal boats, Kayaks, and Stand Up Paddle boards. The dog park is nice with access to the lake for dogs. Sites are level with a good mix of Back in and Pull Through. Water and Electric was conveniently placed. Be sure to check on shuttle times early if you want to go to Charleston or Folly Beach. Uber to Charleston was about 13.00. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Charleston is only 15 minutes away and has great tours and lots to see and do downtown. Folly Beach is also close and is a great beach area as well as a fun town to spend some time in. The Charleston Tea Plantation is well worth the visit and the tour is very informative.

Park is officially one of my favorites now. We camped in spot number 9 and everything was great. It was close to the bath house and spot was very spacious. Only downside was because of the tree cover no satellite reception. Dog park was the biggest most amazing dog park i've ever seen, our 1 year old lab had a blast!! Right up until he saw the gator in the water!!!! Quiet at night, roads easy to find your way around. Close to Folly Beach and Downtown. Everything at this park was really good we really enjoyed our stay and will be back for sure. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Most of the sites are very long and spacious, with vegetation between sites. Most sites are treed, so satellite TV is no go. Good hookups. One caution if you have a motorhome that is over 12'10" tall. The trees are not well trimmed on the road going to the park. We had to stay toward the middle of the road and still the trees brushed the top of our motorhome, everything is fine once you are in the park. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Nicest government run park I’ve ever seen plus largest dog park ever. Close to Charleston but no town for an RV of any size. Very congested and very narrow streets. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed during Festival of Lights. Beautiful lights display drive thru beautiful county park. Be sure to return before 5pm if you leave park. This is a very well attended event that draws huge crowds. $10 shuttle to Charleston Visitors Center where you can easily walk or catch free buses to almost anywhere you'd want to visit. Decent wifi, little chance of satellite reception. Nice clean park, great staff. We camped at James Island County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Exceedingly clean bathrooms area for this park, and in general the facilities were top notch. Wifi was available throughout the park, but very inconsistent in the actual bandwidth--it seemed to fluctuate wildly, and not just in the evening. We were there during the Holiday light display which runs from November through early January. Really impressive display. Of course, we missed the waterpark since we were there in November. Short drive into downtown Charleston. Plenty of bike paths around park, and a nice playground. We camp with small children, and there were very few other families at the park (at least when we visited.) We camped at James Island County Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a great park. Huge, with big water park, biking, fishing... And it has one of the very best dog parks ever. Huge with a big pond. Short, 15 minute drive to downtown Charleston. Only downside is that drainage is not great so when it rains, there are puddles everywhere. Sites are gravel back in. Lots of shade trees. Good for shade, bad for satellite reception. Wifi very slow. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a fantastic campground that sits within a park run by Charleston County. The park has many amenities: swimming, a splash park for kids, walking and biking trails, and more. The sites are shaded with well-placed hook-ups. Access roads are a bit tight for a big rig but manageable. We had a pull-thru site (#97) on a corner - easy in and out. Trash receptacles and recycling bins are conveniently placed throughout the campground. Access to the park is off Central Park Road and Riverland Drive. Both roads are narrow with low, overhanging trees. Our Class A is 12'10" high and we scraped several trees going in and out of the park. When leaving the park there is a tight right turn from Riverland onto Central Park which we made fine with our big rig but only because there was no oncoming traffic on either road. We spent a week here and were able to see a lot of the Charleston sights. Overall, this is a great park and we will definitely return. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Downtown Charleston is an easy 15-20 minute drive from the campground. There is also a shuttle bus that will take you downtown in the morning and bring you back in the afternoon. It's $10/person round trip. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants close to the campground including a Publix.

Overall a great park. Arrived in a pouring rain so the parks hard packed sand/dirt sites were muddy with lots of low spots and standing water. The water park when finished should be great for kids.Very large county park with lots of outdoor activities and no money spared. The water laden oak tree limbs were scary low for our 45 foot motor home on the way to the park but no damage done. Would definitely stay here again. We shouldn't have been surprised from all the other reviews, but this county park is a real gem. Some of the sites get a bit close without too much tree/shrub between but overall nice campground with full hookups. Recently renovated bathrooms and showers were excellent. A few washers/dryers around ($2/load). The water park across the street looks like it should be a lot of fun but was under construction during our visit. Overall the park facilities are great with a huge dog park on the pond where dogs have lots of space to run and swim. Good paved trails for walking/running. And of course the location is great too as you are ~10 minutes from Charleston and also 10 minutes to Folly beach, so there is plenty around to do. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.
