The staff were very helpful and courteous. The site was 50 amp newly installed. The water was innovative with a installed back flow preventer. With campers close by, it was very pleasant. - FrederickC

Chester State Park is a beautiful, small campground. The grounds and roads are very well maintained, and the sites are clean. Sadly, there are only 3 sites with an open view to the lake (which is 50+ yards or more away)... which means that if anyone wants to spend time at the lake (which is everyone), they have to cut through the areas around those 3 sites to get to it. This doesn't seem like it would be an issue, as there are several ways to get around the sites without cutting right through someone else's campsite, but it seems that cutting through an actual site is the way most people made their way down there. Basically, there's not much respect for "personal space". We didn't really have an issue with this, and still found the trip to be very relaxing (even with the distance to the lake, the view was amazing), but if you are more of a private person, this may be annoying to you. Another nice feature is that this park has a disc golf course, but you need to be a bit better than a beginner to really enjoy it (we are beginners). The course is cut out nicely, but it's still like hiking and the "rough" is really rough, so losing your disc in the woods can result in a lot of brier cuts and scrapes. - FlowerChild7275

Site was very nice for one without sewer hook-ups. Electric was stable and good. Water pressure was a little low for us to take showers. One of the toilets in the men's bathroom was broken loose from the floor and appeared to have been that way for a long time. My wife told me that there was two toilets in the women's bathroom that were broken the same way. The main problems that we had was with the enforcement of their pet policies. We kept our small dog on a 6' leash as the rules stated, but there were several other campers that just let their dogs run loose with nothing restricting their movements. One of the campers had a very large dog that was on about a 20' rope and when we went by that campsite I thought the dog was going to break the rope until the owner had to grab the dog and physically restrain him. Also there were several sites where the dogs were tied out to a tree, or the camper, and allowed to stay there. I thought that you were not supposed to do that. We tried to be very careful of the other camper's sites when we were walking but I noticed that some of the other campers did not care and would just walk through any of the sites that they wanted to. I also noticed several sites that had at least three or more vehicles parked at the site. Most of these sites are small and barely able to have one vehicle parked much less 3 or 4 vehicles. We also noticed that some of the vehicles were driving very fast through the campgrounds even though there was a 5 mph speed limit. This could be a great place to camp if the camp host or the rangers would monitor the campers and make them obey the rules. Why have rules if you are not going to enforce them? We will not be staying at Chester State Park again until they start making everyone go by the rules. - dakota ev

We stayed for 3 weeks and loved it even though we had to move sites a couple of times to work around other previous reservations. We stayed on both sides - the lake campground and the office campground. The lake side is beautiful but the sites are smaller and not as level. Site 48 was great on that side - long, level, and spacious (but not next to the water.) The roads on this side are tight and steep in spots. On the office side, the roads are easier to maneuver and the sites are all spacious and pretty level. We attended a horse show on Saturday morning which was fun. We saw lots of people renting boats and using the lake for boating and fishing. The campground is 3 miles from the front gate, and cell signal is almost non-existent in the park. We had no T-Mobile signal and only 1-2mb download signal with our Verizon booster. The park rangers and campground hosts were all very nice and helpful. We would go back here! - mmhopper

Stayed in office loop. Most sites level, in office loop, tho close. Host. Feb to November they have big horse shows the 3rd weekend of month therefore very busy. Lake is nice. Watch out for horse poop piles. Loop was tight w 35' fifth wheel but manageable. - Grady1
May 2016 - $26.00
Large state park with wooded campground, playground, horse rings and stables and many trials for biking, walking, etc. There is even a shooting range in the state park if that interests you. No sewer at the sites, but a dump station near the entrance. The campground is several miles from the main park entrance. Sites are good size with a fire pit and picnic table. The lake loop has numerous sites with views of the lake. There is no swimming in the lake, but kayaks and canoes to rent. - Kelsey Ledare

The park has easy access from the Interstate and the directions and signs to find the park were good. The staff was friendly and they escort to your site. Our site was level with what appeared to be fresh gravel and was sufficiently long for our toad. The only suggestion we could make is to improve the access roads in the park with more gravel to smooth them out a bit. We would return if our plans bring us back this way. - Don & Jean G.

First, I was misled by previous reviews stating the lack of "road noise" from I26 which is adjacent to this campground. There is significant road noise. If you are willing to deal with that fact, everything else about the campground is very satisfactory. We stayed for 2 nights and hiked in the Sumter National Forest which is very close. Sites are gravel and ours was perfectly level. Staff was very accommodating & helpful. Restrooms were very clean. - Penfield Pathfinder

My friends and I stayed here recently, while participating in a precision rifle match at the nearby Clinton Plantation (12 miles/10 mins up I-26).On-arrival, the staff was very courteous and helpful. They guided us to our assigned camp spot, and anytime we stopped into the office/store we were met warmly. - Ed Grossheim

What a wonderful, hospitable family that owns this campground! They are super friendly and go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable, which we appreciated very much. For example, even though it had recently stopped raining, they offered to turn on the inflatable jump pad for our kids. This is a tidy campground with attention to detail. The bathrooms were immaculate, as clean as any we've seen all over the country. I caught several bass on their one acre catch-and-release pond and the kids enjoyed feeding the ducks. We had full LTE cell service (AT&T) and the wi-fi was good. We stayed one night in site #31, a pull-thru with full hook ups. If you need to camp in the Spartanburg area, do yourself a favor and come stay with these kind folks. - texasAUtiger

The campground is several miles from the major highway and is quiet. It is a nice campground but a bit dated. Restrooms were spotless and beautiful. Pull through were a bit tight for the 39' 5th wheel. When we arrived the owner (wife) told us that they lived on site and could be contacted if there were any problems. My wife purchased 2 T-shirts. The following morning she discovered that the T-shirts did not fit. The office was closed so we called the campsite number (7:45 AM). No one responded and we found out that the office did not open until 10:00. We walked to the owner's home and a camp worker told us just go to the house. Owner opened the door and asked why we were on his property. Gave him the shirts and told him just to refund the money to our account. A little while later as were leaving, he drove up and was irate that we had come to his home and gave me the $20. In all the places we have visited, I have never been treated so rudely. - Bill Healy
Sep 2018 - $40.00
Very quiet campground about 4 miles from the interstate. We had a level pull-through site. Our internets, both Verizon and T-Mobile, were spotty. There is a small, maybe 50' hill with a 8-10% grade when you leave. We were able to get a signal on our Direct TV satellite dish, and there are many OTA channels available. We would stay here again. - Liz I.
