We have camped here many times over the past several years while visiting family in the area and also shopping, touring in the Charlotte NC area. Very nice county park and campground on Lake Wylie. No cable but there is good reception with conventional antenna. Most sites have a little slope so leveling is necessary. The location of the sewer hook up in a lot of sites is near the front of the site. You may need up to four sections of sewer hose to connect depending on the location of tank connections. - subldo

We stayed here for 3 weeksWe have stayed here before previously. Our favorite place in the Charlotte area. Sites are spacious, not too close together. Had full hookups for $31/night. We stayed in the wooded side, lots of shade. Not great for satellite tv, got enough to watch from local channels. There is Wi-Fi depending on how close you are to the transmitter. Pretty busy during the summer on the weekends being close to the lake. Middle of the week we pretty much had it to ourselves. Highly recommend this park. - Vicksburg
Jul 2018 - $31.00
This is a wonderful small County run park that has it all. Lake swimming, boating, wooded campsites and some that are not. Very helpful people on site. I changed my reservation twice and they really worked to accommodate my one night stay. We had a full hookup drive through site #31 that was wonderful. Really couldn't ask for more. My fifth wheel had a water issue and the Ranger shut the water off. Hadn't been back at the site 5 minutes before someone told me about it. Really helpful. Roads and sites in that park are all first rate. - BWolfAR

Easy reservations and check in. Our site was level and clean, close to other campers but not claustrophobic. Pretty hiking trails of various lengths and difficulty. Lots of kids but quiet at night. Close to town but feels somewhat remote. Faint traffic noise. - rudyhehn

McDowell is a beautiful county park located on the Lake Wylie reservoir, very near Charlotte, NC. Electric and water are provided but no sewers. The roads in the campground are tight, but we were able to manage by going very slowly with our 40' fifth wheel. The camp ground is a pretty, wooded environment and has about 100 sites (tents & RVs). We pre-paid our reservations for 14 days while visiting relatives in the area. The first night I used a whole bottle of a bleach-based bathroom cleaner in an effort to get the shower somewhat usable. It barely treated the mold from thick black stains and webs to brown, but at least I was confident the bleach killed any possible staph or MRSA. The next day a camp worker informed us they try to clean showers and bathrooms now and then as the cleaning service is only provided once a month. I was shocked at that news because hundreds of campers were in the park, and all were using just a few of the remaining, working bathrooms/showers. Our 50 amp breaker went out the second day, on a Thursday evening. The camp manager seemed unconcerned but offered to put in a request for an electrician. She said she could not relocate us. We explained we were concerned because our batteries were depleting while running our fridge, and temps were in the 90's with no AC. She said, "It's a county park. That's what you get." The manager never bothered to tell us the county electrician would not be coming until Monday at the soonest. When we finally learned that news from another camp worker on Saturday, in order to save our batteries and freezer full of food, we had to leave the park. A week later, we are still waiting to find out if the county will approve a refund of our two week pre-payment. I would NOT recommend this park unless you can use your own bathroom/shower, and you have a backup generator. - OH2SD

Viewed from the point of a senior citizen this is not a great CG. It is very difficult to get anything level. The sites are off level every which way. It is impossible to get satellite reception due to the trees, over the air is iffy and cell phone is iffy. That being said for younger people it is a great place. The kids have playgrounds and there are many nature trails. Overall it is a nice campground, just not for us. - vmi1962

This is an attractive park on a lovely lake. However the sites were difficult to navigate, We were in a 38' fifth wheel and ended up parking in the large lakefront lot and walking around trying to find a site that we could back into. They claim to have pull throughs, but I didn't see any. If you have a smaller RV and can get here early in the afternoon ( no reservations), this would be a nice place to spend some time. - eimac

Gravel site, mostly level. The most transients we've ever experienced. Friendly people at KOA office/Valero gas station. Zero space, zero privacy with neighbor's awning an inch from our rig. Instead of parking directly behind us in the designated space, they parked their trailer to the side and encroached in our space. And a guy runs around shuttling people to their sites with each check-in, too, so we have no idea why that happened. That's too close to camp with people you don't know and who blast music with outside speakers. Easy in and out, convenient gas station with good diesel prices. Make sure you have a power conditioner since power swings were frequent. Internet was very good. Road noise. Convenient walk to Publix grocery store. We ended up leaving early. - Roaming Together
Oct 2018 - $51.00
We stayed three nights. You check into the Valero Gas Station and are escorted to the lot. We had a gravel pull-through. We had several OTA TV stations because they had no cable. Did get multiple stations. Commercial planes are constantly flying overhead. There is a Publix grocery store almost within walking distance. The traffic in and around Charlotte is horrendous. A lot to see and do around the city. WiFi was marginal. Plenty of areas to walk your dogs. Nice area to wash clothes. - HMathis58
Sep 2018 - $78.00
Very hard to register at this location. You pull into campground and stop at sign. Then you have to walk across a road to a Valero's gas station to check in. Once registered someone will lead you to your site. The roads are narrow an have several pot holes. When we were there it was a Labor Day weekend and Tennessee, West Virginia football Saturday. It was pretty well packed. Personally, I felt $78.00 for my site was on the high end, but out site was considered a prime spot because it had a concrete slab. Staff was very friendly and helpful. - archbarb

We stayed at Carowinds Camp Wilderness so we could visit SCarowinds (Halloween-themed setup). The campground is easy to get to off of I-77 but you will have to contend with some traffic during their busy times. The campground is clean and laid out well. It has easy access to the amusement park. The facilities looked great but we didn't have a need to use them. As nice as this campground is, the best part was the staff. They were extremely helpful with everything. They even allowed for an extended checkout on Sunday as we had to go to a wedding in Lenior. We'll definitely be back for a long weekend when we can enjoy the park more. - sc_shrpshtr
Aug 2018 - $40.00
Stopped here to visit family in Charlotte as it was the only campground available. Would rate it higher if our destination was the theme park but it was pricey for our use. Treed campground was partially shaded and grass had little chance to survive with cars and trucks driving and parking on it. We enjoyed a visit to the camp store and a nice clean pool that had few others since it is next door to a water park. Directly under the airport flight path for fairly continuous jet noise. Big amusement and water park next door draws most visitors. - Appleknocker
Aug 2018 - $69.00
We stayed here to visit Carowinds Amusement Park so definitely worth the proximity as the campground is right next door. The showers, store/game room, pool, utilities were all top notch. We had a pull through site that was mostly dirt which was terrible when it rained. Otherwise, we loved the park, the employees and our stay. - IBpraisingGod

Park was hilly and not very accessible. Mostly a trailer park. Overnighters get put next to the road with no shade or grass. - Geno1986
May 2018 - $45.00
The check-in time of 2pm is very late - esp. since the check-out time is 11am. We arrived a little early to discover that they were closed, but had the site number and knew where it was from previous research. The pull-thru site is on the roadway directly adjacent to a major construction area (red dirt and huge sewer pipes), which was not very nice. However, the view from the passenger side (exit/entry) was fine, so we did not mind the spot. Unlike other reviews, we did not have a problem with the water. We do not use wi-fi or the restrooms, but the restrooms looked very nice. We felt the price was high for what was offered (and the site). We met the office lady when we went to pay the next morning and she was awesome (the lady waiting on the other customer seemed very nice as well). Both seemed well educated on area attractions and were eager to offer advise. - Deb and Chris
Mar 2018 - $42.00
Relatively easy to reach from inter-state and close enough to Charlotte to make it attractive. "Big Rig" sites are facing sideways onto what at this time was under construction for what looked like apts. Noisy in the morning with big equipment. With South Carolina red clay and quite a bit of rain in the prior days, left a lot of mud with some effort to find a place where our levelers didn't sink. Rest was gravel. Was adequate space for in and out with dolly but tow-car detached. Very quiet, appeared mostly long-term users. Guide to site was helpful in parking. If you're going for a camping experience, this probably isn't the place for you. There was a community fire pit we saw with wood provided but ambience non-existent. If you are there to see Charlotte and aren't going to experience "woodsy" it's fine. - docsheila

Fee is for E/W and includes $2.00 transaction fee. Gravel road through park and gravel/dirt sites might make this park a bit dicey in periods of heavy rain. Many sites require a fair amount of leveling, so try to pick your site before paying. Lots of good shade. Good over-the-air TV signals. Verizon OK but on the slow side. Restroom dated but clean. This is a nice park if you are looking for rustic, secluded, and reasonably priced. - aowcarol
Jun 2017 - $17.00
Roads into campground is in desperate need of repaving. Broken up pavement, dips and holes into the campground. Campground itself needs repair. Roads inside the campground needs to be paved. Too many rocks, high dust, tree roots, holes are in the road leading to your campsite. Most campsites are very clean, but many are not level. Only two out of 100+ sites have been updated in the past 8 years that we have been going. Quiet times are respected by most campers, but many are drinking alcohol and are loud after 11pm. There is a Ranger present during the night and patrols the campground, but some of these campers that are drunk are very disrespectful. The bathhouses are ok, and is maintained by campground hosts. Some bathhouses do not have any soap for your hands. Showers need a good cleaning. Stalls for bathrooms are clean and maintained well. Very nice looking playground, but never used it. Several covered picnic areas that are really nice. Overall it is a good place to go for a quick getaway, but we have never stayed there for more then 3 days. - Prowler on the loose

After the wild fires in North Carolina forced our plans for Thanksgiving to be cancelled, we decided to visit Kings Mountain State Park for the holiday weekend. We were pleased with both the park and the campground. We had a pull through site at the north end of the campground. When checking in, the attendant said they were nearly full with reservations. However, the weather and fire ban must have kept many of the camper away. We gratefully accepted the smaller crowds. The site was what one would expect from a state park. There was a fire pit and picnic table. The site faced the woods and had water and electric at the site. The bathhouse was a short walk from our site. It was older, but generally clean throughout the weekend. There was no heat in the bathhouse, which made for cool evenings, but there was hot water for showers. The campground was older but in good shape. The trails and activities in the park were wonderful. We enjoyed the playgrounds, lakes, and hiking trails. The camp store had essentials and was convenient. The proximity to Kings Mountain National Battlefield was truly a plus and made our stay educational, as well as enjoyable. I would like to return in the late spring of summer. - dmaerz

This is a jewel of a RV park for an extended stay or a few nights. Does not have a lot of amenities, but is a clean, safe, easy access, place to RV when in the Charlotte area. Very convenient to major roads. Just a few minutes to anything. Owners are wonderful people who care about providing a good park. Family run and operated. The price is the best in the area and includes electricity on extended stays. Charlotte International Airport is nearby and park is near landing path, but seeing the planes come in is neat. - Cme4RV
Mar 2015 - $30.00
The price here is very low, which might be a plus. The bathroom, which is basically inaccessible to most of the RV spots, is also the worst we've seen on our entire trip around the country. It looked like a bombed-out tool shed and wasn't stocked with any TP, soap, etc.
As reported in several other reviews, the husband is a very difficult and unhappy person. Unfortunately, his wife runs everything and is often gone, so you very likely will have to deal with him. Everything we communicated with the office was lost, confused, or not passed on to the appropriate person.
Others report an OK, stay, and I can see that happening if you can avoid dealing with the office and don't mind using your own RV's bathroom/shower. If so, might be worth a look. Otherwise, no way. We certainly won't be back. - 5thWheelAroundTheCountry

They take cash only, hmmm that was very interesting. Also, good luck trying to level. I have a 40 ft motorhome and I got nowhere near level after 30 minutes of trying. Watch out for the speed bumps on the east side of the property. They are impossible to hit straight so everything in your refrigerator and cabinets will be thrown around big time. No use in returning to this one. - Johnnyboy21

Lovely place to spend a fall week-end. Not a lot of "attractions." There is a nice museum and some well kept trails but I think the main draw is the peace and quiet.
Our 23' TT and extended cab fullsize truck fit fine, but I wouldn't want to pull much longer in there. But there was a 40' class A in the pull through site next to us, so it can be done.
Mostly shady sites. Clean restrooms. Site surface is a concrete pad featuring a fire ring and picnic table. - richamor
Jul 2017 - $20.00
Campsites are extremely tight. This park could be much better, but too many trees and sites are too close together. I almost gave up but we finally we able to get our camper in after neighbors moved their cars. The trees right on the road make navigating through the park hazardous. We stayed in one of the only two full hookup sites. The back-in site stated it was for a 40 ft camper but was really for a pop up. Site was very unlevel. There is a nice lake for fishing so its not all bad, but campground needs to cut some trees before I will go back.
You get what you pay for. Don't expect a lot of room. - Pete Trurnero
Dec 2016 - $20.00
Visited in Cold Weather ( nights below freezing ). The campground has freeze proof water connections at site and we just disconnected hose at night and reconnected during the day. Very nice small pack, a little tight for larger rigs. We stayed in site 11 which is a bit of a trick to back in between trees and drop off along side of site. We will choose another site ( lots of good other choices ), on a second visit. Suggested to park management that they may want to consider removing the problematic tree. :-) Good location, trails to hike and good historical visit. Close to Landsford Canal SP as well if you are interested in Upstate SC history. 8 miles from shopping, gas and dining if needed. - Dale-from-NC

I required a refund and left after had to have law enforcement deal with owner who cursed my 74 year old mother and threatened her because she asked about wi fi (which they don't offer). Rate is not as advertised, and park is trashy; I've seen more gravel on a dirt track. All back in sites if you can find your place. They gave me directions 4 times and I drove for three hours to go 1 mile from where I started. Been camping and RVing for 50 years and worst place I have ever seen and worst people (owner) I ever dealt with. Stay away. - Jvf

We stayed here for one night in 40' motor home. Person at the desk had no people skills at all. No one helps you find your spot or helps you back in (all lots are back in ) and you need help as spots are small. At $40.00 a night this place is terrible. It is not worth $15.00 a night. - RV Frank

Sites are small-no fire rings-website says $25/night,but when you get there the sign says 25/night mon-thur-its 40 on weekends-the only thing going for them is the drive in theater. - Reteze
