So—only a 4-star rating but that is about the actual site, not the park. The park is great and we plan to return a there is so much to do and see in the park, and even more in the area around the park—Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Mount Rushmore, and more. We had only two full days, and spent one at Wind Cave and the other driving Iron Mountain Road and Needles Highway—experiences not to be missed. In the park we did the Wildlife Loop Road and went to Coolidge Lookout. This is a HUGE and excellent park with lots of services, stores, restaurants in the park. The park is a mix of forested hills, rocky hills and prairie—all of it beautiful. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful park. The one way road goes around a loop. The spaces are very spacious with a lot of room in between the RVs on the loop. (Kids were playing football behind us and didn't get close to the RV. There was a lot of trees and lots of wildlife. One afternoon there was about 20 turkeys across the road and a nice lake close by. Had to pay a state park fee of $20 but it was good all over SD. Did a lot of driving. Rushmore, crazy horse, Needles hwy, into Custer, Badlands, Wall drug, Deadwood. (Not all on the same day). We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Motorhome.

This state park is huge with many campgrounds. We ended up in Stockade North which was a little farther to drive, but we thought the sties were better than many. There was lots grass and trees and they were much more private than many. Close to the town of Custer and the Needles highway, convenient to the attractions we were interested in seeing. There were water spigots around the park, but no water hook-up at each site. The sanitary dump station is close to the visitor center, but it was on our way out of the park. Make sure to take the wildlife loop. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed at Custer State Park Legion Lake campground with 43ft. Motorhome towing toad. Big rig friendly. 50 amp electric. No water or sewer. Very beautiful setting. Buffalo came up to our motorhome! Lake across street amazing peaceful. Close to Mt. Rushmore! Roads to campground are easy to navigate, but do not go onto Iron Mountain Road, super dangerous and impossible for motorhome, thankfully there are warning signs for that road! They really take care of this park. The sites were nice and had plenty of trees with shade. The restrooms were very clean and the staff was always helpful. There was a trail to the lake you could walk down but would have to drive mostly to the other things you would like to see. Great Park to stay in. Close to Custer, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. We were here before the Rally and it was still pretty busy. Campsite was busy and most sites are back in. They have few pull throughs, but they are tight for space for a tow vehicle.
This is our third stay here and we will stay again. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This is the best campground in Custer State Park. The only hook-up is electric but if you choose your site carefully, water can be very accessible. There is no dumping or dump station at Stockade. You have to go out of the park or head further into the park to Game Warden area. There are two sites there with water to flush and potable water to fill your fresh water tank. The volunteers at the park are very helpful and friendly and don't interfere. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There are ton of things to do in The Black Hills area. There are several driving loops in the Park which are really nice. Of course, there's Mt Rushmore.

Shady, beautiful park with very spacious sites tucked in unique ways. The camp hosts were nice. There was a trail to Stockade Lake for fishing, but not much more in the way of hiking directly from the campground. There is a play structure in the middle of the park, which was great for the kids. It is at the western edge of the park, so easy access to the town of Custer for food and drinks. I would stay here again, but first I would want to try out some of the other campgrounds for better hiking/biking access. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Motorhome.

Beautiful, clean, quiet, green, lot's of space between sites. We were in site #28. Very good Verizon signal. We had no problem maneuvering our 40' 5er. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Super quiet campground with lots of space between sites. The camper host was wonderful too, coming around nightly to tell us about activities in the amphitheater there. We found it very easy to travel all around the Black Hills from here. It's important to know your site number when you arrive, we did not and had to call the SD state parks number to get it from them (phone and number at restroom) because you don't check in with someone you just go to the site. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Tent Trailer.

Nice wooded site, we camped near the top, 2 slots down from the host. Nice and quiet. The toilet/shower house was very nice. You have to make reservations by calling a toll free number. If you wait until you get to the park you probably won't have cell phone service, but each campground has a phone that you can use to call and make reservations. The setting was very nice, campsites separated nicely as in most state parks. It was an excellent site to tour the park and surrounding areas from. One drawback is the fact that sites do not have individual sewer, not even a dump station in the park. I would have had to travel to the east side of the park or go into Custer to dump. The reservation system for Wyoming State Parks was not very good, I was assigned a site that barely fit my trailer and I had to block one side up 6" to get the trailer level. There is no reason for a site being out of level by 6" over an 8' span. Next time, if there is a next time, I would check out the sites before phoning for a reservation, and then I would have been able to tell which site I wanted. The only reason I stayed at Stockade North was when I searched the sites on the internet, it appeared to be the only one that could handle trailers the size of mine. After driving through the park, most of the other campsites in the park would have had more suitable spots for my trailer. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

A beautiful state park campground. Excellent restrooms and showers. Very friendly camphost. Well separated sites with a table and fire ring. All of the scenic beauty, wildlife, and attractions nearby make this a great choice to use to see Mt. Rushmore and the area. If it had water and sewer hookups, it would be perfect. Almost is now. We would definitely stay again. We camped at Custer State Park - Stockade Lake North Campground in a Motorhome.

This is the best public park I have ever stayed in. It has electricity, a dump and access to water for your holding tank. There is unlimited stuff to do in the park. Game watching is wonderful--buffalo, deer, elk, donkeys. Mt Rushmore, the Badlands and Deadwood are easy day trips. The little town of Custer is delightful. Don't miss this place.
