We spent two nights at Custer State Park, one night at Game Lodge and one night at Sylvan Lake. I liked Game Lodge better. Just a personal choice, I suppose. Game Lodge was more open and airy, while Sylvan Lake was darker-pine trees were around the sites. Sylvan Lake had more spacious sites. And, I did not like the showers at Sylvan. They were a different configuration, which I did not like, and the water flow was not as good. They were also not as clean. This campground is close to the general store, which was nice. We camped at Custer State Park - Sylvan Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

The park entry fee was $20. Campground fee was $21 for sites with electricity and $19 for sites without. There is another $7 fee for campers who are not South Dakota residents. The Needles road has a passageway through rock walls that is too narrow for motorhomes, so beware of that. We came in after the park rangers had left for the day, so we paid the $20 in an envelope at the entrance. The camping fee we paid online in advance. The campsites had electricity only. We had a site near the entrance, but there was no traffic on the road, just the babbling brook that goes under the entrance, so it was quiet. This campground is at the north end of the park, convenient if you are coming in from the north. The rest rooms were fine, located in the center of the campground loop. There is a store a short distance away, near the lake. We camped at Custer State Park - Sylvan Lake Campground in a Motorhome.

We were in site #31E with nice shade, but no privacy and very close to adjacent sites. Good electricity, several water hydrants scattered around campground, but no Custer SP RV dump for 20 miles (at Game Lodge CG). We dumped at Fort WeLikIt RV Resort on Hwy 87 near Custer for $5.20. So, adding that to the CG fee makes it $22.30 for the 4 nights we were there. Then there is the $15 park entrance fee good for 1-7 days. That makes our nightly rate right at $26/night. The men's restroom has one toilet stall and two showers (free), so count on waits if using either. And the campground is about 1/2 mile from Sylvan Lake via a poorly maintained trail through the woods. My overall opinion is that too many sites have been crammed into an old campground to maximize income and the CG infrastructure (restrooms, showers, dumps, path to lake and general store, etc.) has not kept up. We camped at Custer State Park - Sylvan Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The only flaw - would loved to have water hookup. Otherwise this campground is a nice forested campground about 1/4 mile from Sylvan Lake (gorgeous lake and good for swimming). There is a campground store there with some basic goods. Lodge is also close. Our site was a backin (22E). There is a good mix of tent and RV sites in the park. Bathrooms and showers (free!) were clean. Had tables and fire ring. This campground provided a great launching off point for other Black Hills side trips! In addition, Harney peak trailhead is right here (great 7 mile hike!) and Needles are right around the corner. ONE note - Be aware of the tunnel height/width before you come - no RV can make it through the Needles highway (coming in from southeast into campground). Can be accessed from town of Custer just fine (no tunnels). We camped at Custer State Park - Sylvan Lake Campground in a Travel Trailer.
