Grass needed to be cut. Sites were not level, had about a 1 foot drop from our bottom step and continued downward. Water pressure was non-existent with their regulator on faucet. We were told we would be charged another $20 if we took the regulator off. The only nice thing I can say is it is a very nice setting. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Stayed for 5 days. Staff was very nice. Roads around the park are rough so be careful. Our site was mostly level but we needed a couple of blocks since parts were washed out. Site had a lot of sun in the afternoon on the passenger side, main camper area. Wifi did not work at our site due to lightning damage. Cable TV was great. Verizon tower just down the road. Sites were spaced fine for a tourist area during high traffic time I thought. Two laundry facilities were good. Firewood was $5 for 7 sticks. Very convenient to Custer and all the attractions. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Motorhome.

Team Car Rentals will drop a car off here if you need one and don't have a toad. Downtown Custer is a great little place. So much to do in this area you won't be bored!

Nicest park I have ever stayed in. Very clean, full hookups, many pine trees, and room between spaces. Price very reasonable this close to Mt. Rushmore. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Uneven sites, kids running all around, weekend campers. No one knowing rules. It was not a good weekend. Sites right on top of each other. I wish we went somwhere else. The people working there are nice but it seems a lot of trailer trash. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Motorhome.

FWL Manager, owner at Fort Welikit Family Campground responded to this review

John,

We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay. I noted you were here over the Fourth of July weekend and that is the busiest time of the season and we often have family groups spending the holiday together. Any park in the Black Hills would have been at capacity during this time as well and equally as busy. While 99 percent of campers follow the rules there is always a small percentage who do not and we do our best to remind them to supervise their children, most the time this addresses the issue. We have 45 foot luxury coaches down to the smallest pop-up campers but have never had guests viewed as "trailer trash" in our park and we are sorry you felt that way about the wonderful campers we see every year. I did notice you chose to extend your stay after arrival so hopefully your time was not all bad.

We stayed 7 nights in order to get the free night. Hookups were convenient. Free WiFi and cable. WiFi was spotty at times; okay for surfing, slow for streaming, we used our Verizon hotspot for streaming. Cable is very good. Sites are gravel and mostly level. There is a bit of road noise at times from Highway 89. Campgrounds are well-kept, laundry room is clean. Nice but small dog area. We would stay here again. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This campground has excellent access to Custer State Park, especially the Sylvan Lake area. Its also well situated for Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Wind Cave NP. The campground is on the side of a hill so most sites were tiered. The ones at the bottom, like us, get flooded out with heavy rains. Most sites were back-in with just enough room for the MH and tow. Sites were generally level dirt/gravel or silty at the bottom. There are about 6 restrooms that have both showers and toilets. Sometimes there was a wait. Bathroom floors were dirty and wet, which didn't work well after showering. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Motorhome.

Must download directions from their web site. Don't trust your GPS. Their directions could have been better. Our site was away from the road and very quiet. Campground is centrally located near Custer and convenient to most Black Hill attractions. Office staff was pleasant. Maintenance staff, not so much. Lots of trees require big rigs to be very careful. Our pull through site was very long. Utilities are well placed and worked well. Wifi worked well except in the evening. Cable is digital and excellent except that it doesn't have NBC, CBS or ABC. I would stay again. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Motorhome.

Excellent location for Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park. Feels like a National Park settings with full hookups. Very friendly staff. Saw deer walking through the campground everyday. Lots of trees for the big rigs to keep and eye on. Some back in spots required the staff to help some folks back in. Easy pull thrus. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Camped with 2 other campers with our family. They were able to get us close together. The park is very nice and the kids really enjoyed the playground. The park is convenient to local attractions. All connections worked well. Trees prevented any satellite reception, but we were here to visit and sight see anyway. Would definitely return! Having propane in the park is a bonus. Fort Welikit was a great place to stay visiting Mt Rushmore. Our 38' Class A did have to take specific route in the park to get lined up to park in our pull through space. The maneuvering can be tight but the staff knew the best ways to go. Our site had trees close by and we couldn't open our awning. A picnic table and fire ring was included. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Motorhome.

We stayed at this campground and really enjoyed it. We were here in May and the campground was nearly empty. We had space 7, which was a large pull-through spot. We have a 40ft 5th wheel and had no issues getting into the spot. Lots of trees and shade at the park. We saw deer and turkey going through the camp. The campground has wired cable at the spots and it was nice not having to setup the satellite dish. We saw lots of other camps while driving around and most of them looked like parking lots - spaces with not much shade or trees. Plus, this place is very central to the attactions - 6 miles up the road is Sylvan lake and the Needles Hwy. Drive it and be amazed. Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse are all very close. I'd recommend this park. Be very careful when driving to this place. Our GPS told us to turn off Hwy 16 and onto Hwy 89. DO NOT DO THIS. Hwy 89 is the Needles Hwy and has a 10ft high x 9ft wide tunnel on it. It's the closest route, that's why the nav points this way. Instead of taking this Hwy, stay on Hwy 16 truck route all the way into Custer and then turn onto Hwy 89. Campground is 1mile up Hwy 89. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We are newbies with a new travel trailer and the hosts were EXTREMELY helpful. The campsite was easy to pull into and level. It included cable and the hosts even helped us with our tv hookup! All the facilities were clean and the laundry area had great machines. Great experience and we are looking forward to coming back. Thanks for making our first trip awesome! Nice park located in Custer which is fairly central to many of the activities in the area. Park was nearly empty when we were there however if it full, there are some sites I wouldn't like to have as it is bit of an odd layout and lots and lots of trees that could prevent you from fully extending your awning or slides (those same trees provide lots of beauty and shade however!). Some sites are also aligned so that you could really get to know your neighbors since you share a yard area with them; firepits nearly side by side. With a nearly empty park we had our pick of sites. Strong cable signal, didn't use the Wi-Fi so I can't comment on it. Nice playground for kids; saw lots of deer and turkeys almost daily. Nice folks at check-in and they were always ready to help when needed. We would stay here again in the fall. We camped at Fort Welikit Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.
