The road in was very narrow. Our site was on a hill but we were able to get our motorhome level without getting the front wheels off the ground. There are a lot of trees to avoid. Otherwise we liked this park. It was quiet and had a couple of restaurants to choose from about a 1/2 mile away. - Bat Rider
Oct 2019 - $45.00
Our first time at this KOA and we were pleasantly surprised as it is older but well kept facility. For a big rig like ours (45 ft., 13'4"), I'm always concerned with tree branches and this park is well treed. They keep the limbs cut back and we had no problem maneuvering to our spot. The electric is good at 122 on each leg with our 50 amp connection, the electric post, water and sewer outlet was perfectly located for our coach. The staff was very nice and we were escorted to our site. The cable TV worked well offering about 23 stations. The sites are close but accommodating for our 4 slide-outs, putting out our awnings would have been limiting. Would definitely stay here again. - MarkG.

We had a nice stay. We stayed at Stagecoach Hill site 13. We picked our site. It was fairly level (more level than most) The sites are close together. We stayed during fall break. The camp store is only open Thur-Sun during offseason but there is a store close by that was open every day. The ladies shower took forever to heat up. I stood watch while my wife and daughter showered in the mens area. The gameroom was being remodeled and was closed. The staff are friendly and helpful. We rented a golf cart and drove it to downtown for site seeing. Stagecoach Hill only has 50A service. Bring an adapter if you don’t use 50A service. Overall we had a great time. - Mountain Man
Oct 2019 - $40.00
The sites were very close. The sites were not on level ground. Some sites didn't have tables or fires rings. The didn't assign lots, you drove till you found one you liked. No cell phone or TV. - Penny Holman
Oct 2019 - $23.00
If you enjoy no television (satellite, cable, ota) no cell service, poor wi-fi, acorns bombing your roof, asphalt pad just wide enough for your unit and no patio. When exiting your RV be careful to not fall off the edge of the asphalt slab. If this is your idea of a campground in the woods, on a mountain slope, with narrow roads, this place just might suit your fancy. The girl in the office is not a people person. Now for the rest of the story...the LL Tour was fantastic! Don't miss her plantation home and museum. Worth the $30 ( $27 with military discount) Southern Living did a photo shoot of her home for the November magazine. Had we known, we would have camped somewhere else near and come back for the tour. - saintjamescity

This is a small private park close to I-40 exit 137 and the Tennessee River. The pull-through sites have full hookups. All sites have 30/50 amp power. Several of the full hookup sites are occupied by seasonal campers. There are cabins and a house for rent. A pavilion is at the top of the hill and a pond with fountain at the bottom of the hill. We did not use the restrooms. The manager is very talkative and helpful. We arrived at dusk and there were a lot of mosquitoes. We stayed here because the nearby park had dog breed restrictions. The manager here was very dog friendly. This campground is in a rural area and not near restaurants or gas stations. It is an OK place for one night since it is near the interstate. The manager prefers if you arrive by 7 p.m. unless you call and make special arrangements. - Lini

Overall a nice place to stop for the night. Nothing fancy but everything worked and the Verizon signal was 5 bars! - naknak

I have stayed here a couple of times, the folks are nice and you can't beat the price! Restrooms are outdated, but decent enough.. good stopping place for the night! - NFRS
May 2019 - $22.00
As said in previous reviews, this is a bare bones campground convenient for an overnight along I-40. The owner is pleasant, the hook ups are fine and the pull through sites accommodated our 32ft MH and tow without unhooking. However, I would not recommend this campground if you need to use their bathrooms. They have no windows, ventilation and evidence of mold. There was a fan hooked up that only moved the bad air around... - Fwdaj

The park is on narrow back roads. We made it with our Class C and Honda CR-V in tow. The lanes are Barrie with no shoulders. Happy Hollow loop has paved sites with W+E There is a large grass area to play or relax and catch some sun. Be careful if going in here with an RV over 35'. - Todd Fogelberg
Oct 2017 - $14.00
If you're a van or tent camper and don't need utilities, go for the rustic (primitive) campground. Sites are huge gravel pads with great river views and easy access to the rocky shoreline. Wood railings were recently updated, though the picnic table was showing its age. Restroom was decently clean but didn't have showers or hot water. It was very peaceful to camp at night with lots of wildlife noises. Super friendly staff when we checked in, and they even welcome dogs in the visitor center and park museum. Beware of "20 Mile" hiking trail that connects to primitive campground -- it's infrequently marked and poorly maintained. Shorter loops inside the park were in better shape. Weak but usable Verizon service. - RVNed
Jul 2017 - $20.00
On Friday, July 7,2017 I arrived at Nathan Bedford Forest State Park and departed on Monday, July 10, 2017. I had campsite 31. In my 25 years of camping I have never experienced the lack of enforcing the 10 PM quit time. At 11:30PM seven or eight bike riders were passing through my campsite. Earlier a dodge ball game was going on using the side of the bathhouse wall as a back stop and bounced back into our campsite. I could also mention seven or eight; seven to ten year olds with disrespectful attitudes. I know the Rangers can't control other people's children or the parents who play corn hole til midnight but they can make them comply to park rules. It is their responsibility. The museum , on an upbeat, was beautiful, displays were well organized and the view of the river was awesome. The plaques around the museum were explained well. The museum on a scale of 1-10 would rate a 10. - Buggs Guidry

Spent one night. Pulled in after hours. Were told they had pull-throughs but ended up having to use two sites that were back to back. Friendly staff when we checked out, but sites are not large, a lot of folks there full time it appears. Overpriced. A long distance off the interstate for just an overnight stay. - Len Fletcher
Aug 2017 - $40.00
One of the worst experiences ever. We needed a pull through site, but it turns out there are only three, referred to as transient sites. Don't be fooled by 'choosing' your site, it probably won't be available when you arrive as the owner doesn't pay attention to any of that, according to others in the park. If you have a big rig and need, want, think you're paying for 50 amp, you won't, so don't plan on it. Turns out our electric had to be run under the coach, with hookups on the passenger side, plugged into the site next to us, hornets nest and all. The sewer was all the way at the back of the coach and the water all the way in the front on the driver side. We lost power no less than 4 times, the last of which fried a breaker in the coach which we are now having repaired at our next stop. Their internet stinks so don't pay for it if you don't have to. You will pay in full at the time of reservation, so be sure this meets your needs. The concrete pad for our site was very narrow as are the roads in and out of the park. We couldn't get out of there fast enough and will never come back nor recommend to anyone. It's a beautiful location but a terrible park for big rigs. Don't believe the website or the comments on Facebook like we did. If you have a 40ft motor home, look elsewhere. - AnnNet56
Mar 2014 - $200.00
Park is beautiful, rental cabin #8 had ants, tub wouldn't drain, rotten floor and I was bitten by some bug while sleeping! For over $1200 for the week I guess I expected more especially since the unit has probably paid for itself 40 times over. Birdsong needs to upgrade or cut their prices in half! - otispodis

Let's be very clear. Piney River Escape is NOT Big Rig Friendly. Can you shoe-horn a 42' Class A motorhome that is not towing in? Yes because we did it - so that makes it accessible but not friendly. If arriving from the west on I40 the directions take you down Hwy 48 which is nicely paved but narrow, winding and has a steep drop off instead of a shoulder most of the way. After that Piney River Road to the campground is about 12'-14' wide, bumpy, twisting, has some steep hills and has blind curves. Arriving at the campground you have to pass the exit (which would be the easiest way in) and then can either turn right into the upper campground where the host/checkin is or left into the lower campground. The turn into the upper where you need to go to check-in is guarded by a stout wooden fence on either side and you must turn in at exactly the right angle or risk taking the fence on the right with you or grazing the front left of your coach on the opposite fence. In addition although that entrance has a good amount of gravel it is much narrower than a big coach's turning footprint and the sides are dirt - in our case deep mud as it had been raining. Once in the upper campground the interior roads are gravel but narrow making maneuvering a challenge. We ended up in a back-in site about 3 rows up as that was the easiest to get into but the front of the site was about a 8"-10" lower than the rear. Getting out next morning was as challenging as getting in and we ended up backing all the way out and crossing the road into the entrance of the lower campground so we would be able to easily make the turn onto the road. I will add that if you are towing which we weren't there is no safe place to unhook before attempting to turn into the upper campground unless you go into the lower section and unhook there - otherwise it is unhook on the one lane road. The people seem nice and perhaps in better weather the rural character of the place would be welcoming but just be aware. - kdlee747

The pictures & reviews online are nothing like what we saw! First off we drove almost 3 hrs to get there & was told the site we reserved was still occupied with previous camper, we were shown a different site on the water, too close for my liking, the other section was like a trailer park with long timers. I could go on but hopefully this is enough to make people aware & beware! - Carol662

What a wonderful park. We had a river (big fast moving creek)front site, got lucky, they stay full. The roads getting there are bad... just slow down, you will be okay. The only drawback to the creek side was flash floods... kinda scary watching it rise. They were still recovering from a nasty flood in Nov 2017. The regular sites are way up the hill and high and dry. They are more park like, still very nice. People in this park, a lot of monthly.. a few even visited, were super friendly. The hookup connections were a little rough all though, they were working on it, just trying to be honest, only thing that kept it from a 10... The camphost... cant say enough good things, what a privilege to meet you sir. We are trying to pick a time for a longer stay in the Fall. We had good internet on our Sprint on our hot spot. Follow their directions, NOT GOOGLE!!!! We will definately, absolutely return. FREE LAUNDRY!! - Texanmark

site 15 I stayed in the Spring Creek Primitive Campground. There were no facilities, but there were several porta-potties and each site had its own trash can that was picked up each morning. The sites are right on the water of Spring Creek. The end of the campground over looked the TN river. Sites were small and tight except for a few, and all seemed pretty level. I was in a 25 ft TT. The trailer fit in the site, parked the truck next to it. - OldDude

Nice very will maintained older park. Note that there is a VERY steep hill once you are in the park leading up to the campground. The hill is not long, only about 0.25 miles, but the average grade is about 15% and the steepest part of the hill is about 25%. - ShadyCamper

This is one of the nicest parks we've been to. Very clean and well kept. The rangers and care takers are dedicated to their service. We stayed two nights on our way to the Grand Canyon and would go again if it weren't so far from anywhere. That and no wi-fi is the reason for the 9 rating. - ursula white

Dec 2019 - $33.00
This campground was probably the worst We have ever experienced. The woman who took my reservation was not friendly or very helpful. Since we would arrive after 6 Pm we were to pay in a lock box so of course we had to have cash. The campground had a lot of permanent residents in dilapidated trailers with lots of junk strewn about. Many had unfriendly signs like “go away” “no trespassing” “keep out - vicious dog”. It was very dark when we arrived and the campsite numbers are not easily seen. The utility boxes are dilapidated and we found that our electric box did not work. There is no after hours number and the main number mailbox was full so we couldn’t even leave a message. The campsite was not at all level. We were hoping to get at least a partial refund but the proprietress treated us like we were lying when we reported the problem with the electric the following morning. - Bygrace
Jun 2017 - $32.00
Mostly permanent sites and all of them are incredibly run down. We didn't feel safe at all. Check in was rude. About the only positive thing I can say is the pool looked clean. Internet did not work and water pressure was so low that we just used the holding tank and pump. This park would be a rip off at half the price. - Razin Kane
Jul 2015 - $11.00
We stayed on a monthly rate for 2 months. Pool was clean, staff friendly, park was quiet. Close to shopping, restaurants and gas. Sites are a bit narrow for units with slide outs but was workable. Would stay here again and probably will next year. - lnpdavis
