Each site has electric (20/30/50) and water. Mesquite is the only loop with cell access (2 bars ATT, 0 bars Verizon). Plenty of space between campers. Sites have a log covered pavilion with picnic table and fire ring. Amazing views of the canyon from just about any site. LOVED THIS PARK!!! In addition to the camping fee there is a $8.00/pp park access fee. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in Juniper 105. If it's going to rain, get a site up near the road - the sites furtherest from the road are also lower. It had been raining hard the day we arrived, and our site was flooded mud. No access to the table or fire pit, unless you wanted to ruin your shoes and then track it into the trailer. Juniper was still a nice site - clean restroom, nice pull through sites. It is further back in the park - it's a good 20-30 minute drive from the park entrance at the top of the canyon. Despite the rain, we had a great trip. The sun came out on Friday, and we hiked the Lighthouse trail. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

5 campgrounds spread along an 8 mile road in the park with various types of hook-ups. The facilities are well maintained. Roads are excellent, site spacing and lengths are very good. Beautiful canyon with lots of hiking, biking and horse trails, all well marked. The bath houses are fairly clean, but in the summer time are hot because there is no air conditioning. There is a trading post near the center of all the campgrounds with a small restaurant (sandwiches, breakfast, etc.), ice, camping supplies, ice cream, candy, gift shop. They have gasoline and diesel fuel at the trading post. In the Mesquite campground, most sites have a wooden shade shelter with a table and fire pit. Sites are gravel/dirt and all are back-in. The sites are generally level, but muddy when it rains. Great hiking and lots to see in a beautiful landscape. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

A great place for R/V camping. Temperature 100 degrees but still enjoyed the stay. No camp fires cause of a burn ban in affect, even though its green. Makes no sense. lots of wildlife. Turkey and Deer mostly. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Very nice sites, spacious, picnic table had a cover over them. Highly recommend this Park. If you have a big RV, it can be challenging getting down the 10% grade into the Park. Be CERTAIN your brakes are in order! Staff friendly and helpful. Be sure to make reservations well in advance. Texas State Parks are tops. Usually, restrooms are clean but this time was an exception. I think it was due to it being Sunday night and the Park was busy. An amazing geological formation on the high plains. Good trails for hiking, biking. Quiet! We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a beautiful park - extremely well maintained with beautiful scenery, trails and camping facilities. The 10% grade is for almost 2 miles but take it slow and it's very manageable. We had no problems in taking our 40' Motorhome down to the canyon floor. We stayed in the Juniper loop. Sites are a combination of pull thru and back in and there is extensive space and privacy between sites. Our site had a large covered picnic area where we were able to set up our BBQ and stage our e-bikes. There was also a fire ring and picnic table. 2 dump stations in park with easy access for big rigs. The store in the canyon is stocked with the every day things you might run out of but best to stock up before entering the canyon. Everyone on staff that we encountered were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely visit again. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a perfect example of what a state park should be. Texas does a fantastic job with theirs, based on the ones we've visited so far. Our campsite was spacious, long enough for our 45' fifth wheel and our Freightliner truck. And a motorcycle. The site was asphalt to park on, and fine gravel around the picnic/tent area. Very clean. We stayed in the Juniper loop, which looks like the newest loop. The picnic tables were aluminum and all had a sturdy shelter over them on a concrete pad. Even though it was still winter and the bushes and trees hadn't leafed out yet, we felt like our site was private. The bathrooms in our loop were spotless. We stayed five nights - would have stayed seven but got caught in the new reservation system change and they couldn't find a spot big enough for us so I caved and reduced our stay there. We had perfect weather and got to see all the Points of Interest, and hiked several of the trails. Each trail had its own personality, and all were beautiful and worth the effort. Our price reflects the campsite only, we get the annual pass which covers park admission for all days PLUS you get 1/2 off the second night. Wound up averaging $23.40, and saved us $93.00! Totally worth it. One negative, the dump stations are small with a tight curve. Too small for us. We've encountered that situation before and were able to back in far enough, but we would have stuck out into the road doing that here. We just headed out and dumped at the next place we went. We got data on our AT&T device, no Verizon on our phones. Got several channels OTA from Amarillo. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Old West Stables inside the park does an hour ride for $45. The town of Canyon is big enough to have everything you need but is a half-hour drive if you're at the end of the park like we were - takes 15 minutes just to get up to the top and another 15 to get to town. Do the hikes - they're all magnificent!

Hiking sight seeing photography. Road in is steep (10%), narrow with hair pin turns. No problem unless you are squeamish. Camp sites are not typical commercial as it should be.

We really enjoyed this state park! We stayed at the Mesquite campground. Definitely need to hike around this park. The only causes of potential concern... 1. Some sites aren't level (we had to put our front wheels on blocks so that they wouldn't be dangling). 2. No sewer at the sites. 3. No Verizon service down in the canyon. We'll stop here again though, those were minor inconveniences compared to the rest of the campground! Don't let the 2 mile 10% grade going down into the canyon scare you - it was pretty easy (even with a couple of hairpin turns). We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Motorhome.

Palo Duro Canyon is supposed to be the second largest canyon in the United States. The park and campgrounds are on the floor of the canyon, so it's quite a different experience from visiting the Grand Canyon. We enjoyed our stay very much. Our campground (Hackberry) was very nice, with level gravel sites in the woods, pretty well separated from others. Most sites are back in, but there are some pull through. We saw some big rigs. There's lots to do in the park, from hiking to horseback riding. Bathrooms and showers were okay, typical for a state park. Definitely worth a visit. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Truck Camper.

We stayed in the Juniper loop, which has pull-throughs (#111 by the showers). Unhooked the Jeep and drove all around the park. Beautiful! What an amazingly beautiful place to wake up in the morning! Plus an amazing sunset and a nighttime thundershower to boot. We had unusually cool August weather (only about 90°) so we were able to do plenty of hiking around the park. Hopefully the next time we stay here the showers won't be under reconstruction. Electricity was steady. No cell connectivity in the campground, which is on the canyon floor. No big deal. We camped at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in a Travel Trailer.
