We got there in August and the weather was extremely hot this year. We could only go out at night for fear that the power would go down and our dog would suffer in the coach. Not to imply that the power is sketchy, it hasn't been but we won't take the chance. We had been here twice before in March and the weather was perfect. The base is a bit difficult to locate destinations because google maps isn't up to date as far as the buildings go. The base isn't large so asking a few folks will get you to MWR / PX / Commissary, etc. The train is annoying but nothing to keep folks away, especially with the very good rate you pay. If you call ahead, the staff will guide you through the proper gate and roadways. By call ahead I mean a day or so, so that you can google earth it and plan your route. Making a reservation is sort of tricky. They take your name only and no payment. Then they seemed not to know that you were coming. We arrived here both on our way to Louisiana and back from Louisiana and both times they didn't know we were coming even though we had made a reservation. The situation was remedied though and we had a site to stay in both times. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

This is a wonderful place. All the sites are concrete pads with patios. Nice fenced in dog run. As can be expected on a military facility the park is clean and well cared for. The sites are all pull through, nicely spaced and long. Great place for exploring San Antonio, just 10 minutes from the river walk. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

The RV park itself is nice with long, level pull-through sites with decent grass space between sites and full hookups. Sites themselves are concrete with patio and picnic table. Grounds were well-maintained and grass was cut while I was there. Restrooms/showers were clean. As others have stated, the roads on the post are confusing and in poor condition with limited (and often missing) signage. I suggest studying Google maps or a similar site to plan your arrival. As recommended on the website, I called in advance and the person in the office was helpful in verifying my planned route. It is also a good idea to confirm ahead of time that that you have a reservation. When you make a reservation, they do not send a confirmation, do not give you a reservation number and do not take a deposit. I had no problem, but when a friend arrived a day later, the office had no record of his reservation. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Aloha Kitchen, just north of the post on Harry Wurzbach, is a little hole-in-the-wall place with great Hawaiian-style food. Very popular with troops from the base for lunch. Only open 11-2. For a nice upscale Mexican restaurant, try Paloma Blanca, 5800 Broadway.

Nice park, near the heart of San Antonio. Access is limited to military ID card holders and a bit out of the beaten path, so call for directions. Power pole worked, but needed repair as the door hinge was broken. Bath House was clean, but needed some TLC. One of the men's showers was missing a control handle and the rooms were dingy. The park overall was clean, with generally level concrete sites, and all are pull through. Great playground for the kiddos and visiting grandkids. Easy access to highways. Call for directions, as going through the main Walters Street Gate is out of the way. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Travel Trailer.

We arrived in San Antonio from the south east via I-10 and with help over the telephone with the co-pilot. We eventually maneuvered our way onto post via the Walters Street gate. Once on post, there is absolutely no signage for the campground. Much of this is due to major road construction both on and off post. Consequentially, many of the temporary roads are in bad shape, and it is a busy post. We eventually found our way to the campground and we checked into our site. A good map emailed ahead of time with the available entrances and recommended approach would be a great help. We visited the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) and the Ft Sam Museum, both on post, both free and well worth a visit. Although we do not utilize them, we visited the restroom/shower/laundry facilities (2ea), they are in need of a good deep cleaning. Cobwebs abound, evidence of the lack of cleaning. And in the two weeks we were there, the grass was never mowed. The grass was about a foot high when we pulled out. The trains are about one or two an hour, and love to use their horn... otherwise the area is quiet. We enjoyed our stay in San Antonio, we'd return to this campground, however, the management needs to give up on the apparent hands-off, sit in the office, approach and perform daily inspections of the facilities and campsites. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Large sites with very level concrete sites. Plenty of grass between each site and clear view for satellite. Dog park area is enclosed but would be nicer if larger to allow pets to play but there is plenty of other areas to walk and exercise. Spacious level sites, conveniently located right in San Antonio. Laundry was clean and new (1.50 each to wash and dry). Office has some supplies for sale, as well as a big book exchange library. The price and safety of staying on base makes this a great campground. Friendly staff and camp host. Lots of base construction and road pattern changes/gate closures, so its best to call ahead to find out the best way on to base. Overall Rating:

Fort Sam Houston RV Park is a nice RV Park. The sites are about 100' long, and on a wide concrete pad. All sites are satellite friendly. There are two bathhouses with 3 front loader washer/dryer in each one costing $1.50. There is a small off-leash dog park. The sites have a large metal picnic table and pedestal grill. The spacing between the sites is huge. The park is very clean and manicured. You can purchase LP gas for your tanks here. There is a nice playground for the children next to a large field for sports. The downside to the park is the road noise from the highway, and you are just a couple hundred feet from railroad tracks, and the trains run day and night. The engines to the trains are loud and you would think the whistles are in your RV when they sound them off. The roads are pavement, and the sites are wide with a concrete base. We came up from Florida in December for Christmas. You must see the River Walk this time of year!! We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Fifth Wheel.

Roomy, well designed utilities hookup placement. The maze to get to the park (road construction run amock) was the worst I've encountered anywhere. We called the campground and a wonderful gentleman walked us in turn by turn. Wonderful support. 1st gate we went to turned us around due to road repair, had to go to main gate. We do love the park and facilities. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Easy to maneuver 44ft class a. Sites are pull thrus with enough room for towed vehicle to park on pad. Full hook ups. Great shaded playground for kids with mulch, no swings but there was a climbing wall and a few slides. WiFi only worked at check in building. Would stay again! Base is...interesting to navigate, as long as you come in back gate with motorhome it is not to bad. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

We have stayed here many times. It is an excellent location for downtown San Antonio. The staff are very nice an attentive to your needs. The facilities are clean and neat. We have never had any problems with the hookups. All concrete slab and pull through. Best to call ahead for a reservation as the park stays relatively full. You can just about forget it in the winter. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

I stayed here nine nights while in San Antonio. I called for a reservation, and I'm glad I did: The park was half-empty when I arrived, but filled up quickly.
Sites are level, all are pull-through and concrete. There are trees between sites, but no shade. There is enough space between sites to be neighborly, but I never felt encroached. The nature of the clientele -- active duty or retired military -- also contributed to an enjoyable, quiet atmosphere. No loud partying at all. On the other hand, freight trains come through regularly -- sometimes at late hours -- and announce their arrivals/departures with their whistles, but I'm a sound sleeper, so it didn't really bother me.
Another drawback is the remote location of the park on Fort Sam. Combined with the 20-30 mph speed limit on post, it can make getting around a leisurely experience.
Finally, Fort Sam has a number of gates that used to be open, but are now permanently closed -- something my Garmin GPS didn't know. You'll have to be aware of that during your maneuvers.
One of the cool things about staying here was the Army's tradition of bugle calls. You'll hear Reveille at 6, To The Colors at the end of the duty day, Taps at 11 and several others throughout the day. Suffice to say, you won't be getting *that* experience at just any RV park.
Staff in the office is friendly and quite attentive to whatever needs you might have. I asked to stay an extra couple of days, and was initially told no, but she called me back and said she could make it happen!
I highly recommend Fort Sam's RV park. I'd give it a 10 if it weren't for those trains at 11 at night. Still, I would definitely return on any return trip to San Antonio. We camped at JBSA Fort Sam Houston RV Park (Military FamCamp) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Convenient to San Antonio's many attractions. Call early to reserve for the busy times of the year: Stock Show & Rodeo (Feb. 2017) and Fiesta (April). The gas station by the main gate accommodates RVs, but doesn't offer diesel. It pumps slow, though, so be prepared for awkward Will-You-Be-Much-Longer? looks from the other patrons. The other gas station on post sells diesel (I was told), but I drove by it a few times and it didn't look like big rigs would be able to fit underneath.

We enjoyed a full hook up site on a level concrete pad with patio area. Two clean shower/bath house rooms with attached laundry facilities. There is a nice covered patio on the back of the office with tables and outdoor furniture. Camp WiFi is slow and only available in the office. We picked up 30 over the air TV stations but 30% were Spanish language stations. Excellent reception for cell phone, Jet Pack cellular and satellite (DirecTV). The park roads are well paved for walking and bike riding. The park is near the hospital at Fort Sam Houston so there was a lot of helicopter traffic over the campground. Don't miss the Equestrian Center where you can ride horses and army mules on the weekends. The Quadrangle is the historic part of Fort Sam Houston. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has a museum dedicated to preserving the history of Fort Sam Houston. There is also an Army Medical Museum on base. Full service base with large commissary, extensive BX, package store and fast food type restaurants.
