Weird set-up. Checked in on one side of a 4 lane highway and site was on the other side. Camp staff was not overly welcoming and they didn't even offer us a park map. They showed me how to get to my site on a park map and sent on my way. That was a first for us. Site was fairly level asphalt and E/W connections well place. Site itself was rather small (neighbors pretty close). No trees just grass & weeds. All in all, not a place I would return to, especially because the price, for what you get + for out of state campers is a 'bit' high, IMO. For one thing, paying for your site does not include the $5.00 per day, per person, "day use pass" which is needed to access the beach area. Camped here for 2 days in 41ft Motorhome w/toad & won't return. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Sites are level back-ins. Roads need some attention and overall park needs some TLC. Nature Center closed until March; ranger-led walks listed on the website but not taking place. Overall, a lovely small park overlooking the bay. Staff at registration helpful and pleasant. Fishing, kayaking, boating, hiking trails available. We camped on the bayside which has communal picnic pavilion and firepits in the center of the loop. Dump station nearby as well as on the beachside. Beachside sites are narrow but have a permanent structure over a picnic table at each site and individual fire rings. Texas State Park Pass useful otherwise you are charged pp/per day in addition to the camping fees. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Galveston is 12 miles away. Krogers and Walmart (small lots not suitable for RVs to move easily). Laundry in nearby Jamaica Beach. We were here during the first Mardi Gras weekend, enjoyed the free parade on Seawall Blvd. Festivities in The Strand required tickets. Many RVs boondock Thurs-Sun along the seawall (inexpensive). The historic district, The Strand and Oil Rig Museum interesting; parking fees. Beaches are lovely and 'beach access' means drive your car out there; RVs on the beach.

Access to the park and signage are good. There is pavement all the way but there are a few potholes that need to be attended to. Check in was not as good as it could have been. I requested 6 nights and was told that I could only have 1. Then the clerk said no, I can give you 4 and if you come back early tomorrow morning we may get you the last 2. I go back the next AM and a different clerk said it would have been no problem at the beginning to get all 6. Neither side of the park was ever full while we were there. We stayed on the Bay side as we wanted the view. We visited the Ocean side to walk the beach and are glad we did not stay there. We drove the 2 minutes to the beach instead. Our site, 59, was a paved back in (but we nosed in). It came with 30/50 power, water and a tired table. Fire pits were available in the center of the park along with shelters. There are no washrooms in the RV section. Dump station available near exit. Tenting next door had them. We used this park as a base to visit Galveston. There are no restaurants or services within walking distance. Galveston, a few miles down the road had all services. We paid $20.00 night and feel we received fair value for our dollar. We would return if in the area. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Level asphalt roads and sites in fair condition. Covered picnic table and fire ring. Gulf beach 200 yards or so away over a dune line, with convenient path from campsites. Several hiking trails across the highway in the bay side part of the park. Sites are all back in, and not overly large or widely spaced; but, adequate for most big rigs. Really large rigs and/or toads might have to use overflow parking area. Staff was efficient. Specific campsite is assigned upon check in. Great place to set up base for touring the island. Will stay again. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Electric and water hookups worked fine. Dump station had easy access. There is a beach side and a bayside campground the bayside is so much nicer. You can back right up to the water where the dunes block you view of the water on the beach side. No WiFi but tv signals were adequate. Nearby beach town of Galveston was fun. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed a week at Galveston Island RV Park and then stored our RV there for another week while we went on a cruise. The staff were very helpful and facilities excellent. They are really working on providing activities for visitors and even have a shuttle to take groups of people into activities in town or to the cruise ship port. The park is 18 miles West of the town of Galveston, which is great for peace and quiet if you're not looking for city activities. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Galveston is a great town with an historic downtown, an amusement park, historic mansion, railroad museum, Sea Wolf park with a battleship and a submarine and fishing, a great opera house, and a free ferry to take you East to Port Bolivar. I enjoyed the Mardi Gras with music and parades. The island also has a state park and lots of beaches to walk.

Bay side trailer sites have no bathrooms nearby. Not sure why they can't have a port-a-potty. If you have a short trailer and book onine, lie and say you have a tent. You can park two vehicles side by side in the tent section. But no hookups there, if you're dependent on that. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Great stay... Gulf of Mexico is only a short walk from sites... Our site was very close to a brand-new shower facility; one of the nicest & cleanest we have ever visited! Tested power prior to hooking-up; power clean and stable. Ran all air conditioners and electrical systems with no problems. There is a dump station as you exit the park on the north side of the road. Only drawback is the way sites are aligned with your neighbor's fire pit/grill area; the driver's side rear of our rig was about 5 feet from their fire pit. Park was very clean. Great walking/hiking paths on bay side of park. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Galveston is a great place to visit; most notably is the newly re-constructed Pleasure Pier. We had ample activities at the park to keep us occupied; we did not go into town.

Nice park with 3 sections (12 sites each). Each site has a covered picnic table. There are no trees at the sites. Reservations are highly suggested as the campground is full most nights in the summer. Beach access for each camping section is nearby and an easy walk - and there wasn't any sort of crowd on the beach no matter what time of day you went. There is a new bath/shower house (we did not use). Pads are cement and level - easy to back in and setup. Pads do flood easily after rain and there were park employees who came by to drain the water from the pads. There is also a section on the bay side with a loop for campers and a loop for tents (shower house is located on the tent loop). We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

There are two parts to the park. One is on the land side, the other down near the ocean. Not much of a view of the ocean from the sites because of the barrier dune. There was a walkway to the beach. I was only there one night as there was a storm out in the Gulf and it was so windy I could not get out much. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

We recently stayed a week at a water/electric site on the beachside. We were in the first loop, which has a brand new bathhouse/toilet facility. (Of the three loops here, campers in the middle loop have to use the facilities in the first or third loop.) Our site was just off the path to the beach, which was nice. The sites here may be prone to flooding/standing water if the ground is already saturated from heavy rains. This happened to us one day, but the park crew were quick to come around with portable sump pumps to divert the water, so it wasn't a big problem. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Motorhome.

Galveston has plenty to offer visitors. We enjoyed the Tree Sculpture Tour in town (did it ourselves using a brochure we picked up from the Visitor Center). Tall Ship Elissa was fun to tour.

We only stayed here one night in passing and the prior reviewers have done a good job of describing it so I only have a few things to add. We stayed in the furthest bay side loop. The view of the bay is wonderful and it's probably a great place for birding, but there is NO RESTROOM there. The only one is in the other loop closer to the road and a long walk, so be prepared to use your own facilities or drive/ride to them. I hatehatehate that Texas state parks charges the extra per/day fee. Just seems like such a rip off! Just charge what you need to charge already! I sprang for the $70 "discount" card. We plan on staying in quite a few Texas SP's and it'll pay off in the end, but it still sticks in my craw. TX has a lot to learn from FL on how to run a state park! It is a really nice setting though. The other thing is that you need to check in at the office on the south side of the main road up by the beach camping spots. There is no sign to show where the bay campground is. It was kind of confusing, but just look for the state park sign on the south side of the road and go in there first. We camped at Galveston Island State Park in a Truck Camper.
