Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed first the end of December for several weeks and then came back again the middle of January and paid for a month which lowered the nightly rate down to $14 for a 30 amp full hookup site. The park is run by GBRA (Guadalupe/Blanco River Authority) which is a non-profit government system. We made our reservation less than a week ahead of our arrival and thus did not have to place a deposit. I communicated via email with the office attendant who was prompt in replying and accurate in his information. The reservation process was pretty painless. They don't however accept credit cards at the campground office, it's cash or check only. They even insured the same site on our return visit which was very nice. The roads are gravel/dirt and the site pads are gravel and level. Most of the RV sites are along the north edge of a Pecan grove with a few along the west end and a few also up near the office when you drive in. Utilities are all in good proximity to the sites, with water and electrical at the rear along a fence row which requires a 50 foot water hose minimum. The Guadalupe Rivers runs along the south border of the campground with access for paddling sports. The lake is dry as stated due to dam failure and our understanding is that there is no plans for repair in the near future. The restroom/shower house was adequately kept, but was a dark green which made it like a dungeon. We did use it. During our stays, the park was never full, with weekends being a bit more busy. We prefer public campgrounds for the quiet and natural settings and this park is one of our favorites. We never had issues with rowdy campers during our stays. The birds and deer were abundant. We didn't really fish the river so I cant comment on that. The current was quite swift as we had plenty of rain. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Gonzales has a lot of history being the birthplace of the Texas revolution. There is a memorial museum that is free, several parks and city squares to enjoy, and numerous eateries. Baker Boys BBQ was our favorite. There is also a Walmart, H-E-B grocers, and a Tractor Supply, but they don't have propane so you need to go to Ferrelgas down the road. The office will accept packages for you.

Overall Rating:

The staff is friendly and the park is clean/quiet. The internal roads are tight and very little artificial lights in the area. So if you arrive at night keep a sharp eye out for the big trees next to the roadways. If your looking for a nice place to lay low for a few days, you might want to check this park out. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed three nights in early April with friends camping adjacent. Park was not full for a weekend, so was very quiet. This is a very nice park in the Guadalupe River bottom shaded with beautiful enormous Pecan trees. Access to the Guadalupe River for fishing. The Lake was drained for repairs to the dam to be completed later this year, but we were not planning to use the lake. Lots of birds in the trees. Very well maintained grassy areas. One spot on the loop road through the park was too narrow for our small RV, but no problem getting out the other direction. A small camp store with basic supplies and friendly staff during check-in. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Park is located just a few miles west of Gonzales. Pioneer Village, historic downtown buildings and over 100 historic homes can be seen on a walking or driving tour. Site of the Come and Take It Days. Lots of history here.

Beautiful campground! Good spacing between the campsites. Large high pecan tree canopy that provides good shade. One downside is that because these are such large/older pecan trees there is a lot of limbs breaking and falling. We were lucky and none fell on our RV. The staff at the campground was out daily cleaning and picking up broken limbs. When we were there the lake was drained since one of the dam gates had broken a few weeks earlier. They are in the process of fixing the gate. We had already been informed by the staff about the lake issue in advance. We were thankful for that information since we had planned to bring a boat. We plan on staying here again when we are in the area. We camped in a 50 amp spot in a 36 ft. motorhome. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Loved the tiny town of Gonzales! Lots of history! Every restaurant we ate at was delicious. Highly recommend the following restaurants in the town square area: La Bella Tavola, Johnny's Cajun Café and Gonzales Food Market.

Overall Rating:

A great park! Lake Wood is a hydroelectric lake owned and operated by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. The back-in RV sites were roomy with lots of trees, grass and natural beauty. We had a full hookup site. The bathrooms and showers were clean but were a little old and outdated. The park host was friendly and helpful. There was fishing for those who like that sort of thing. They have a store that my husband was impressed with because of the amount of RV hardware they had available. We will stay there again when we are in the area. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

The slots with full hook ups are in a Pecan Grove. It has a park like setting. The lake is just yards away, but a levy prevents you from having a lake view slot. The website says 50amp only available on one area near the water with no sewer hook up. However, there are more 50 amp slots with full hook ups.

Great RV park. Can't go wrong for $28 ($32 for 50 amp). Quiet and we saw no permanent residents. Mostly empty. A plus is checkout is 5 p.m. Monday thru Thursday!

Front office was fine and the people there were great. They were extremely helpful. Fishing very close.

Lots of room around the pads.

Sites are gravel but level. Electric and water hookups are in the back so you might need an extension cord/hose. We didn't. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The town of Gonzales is nearby. Plenty to do in that town. Good Texas food.

Wal-Mart and HEB (grocery store) are about 5 miles away.

Overall Rating:

A surprising little park. We chose this park because we knew the state and city parks in the area would be full due to the TX State Jr Hi Rodeo finals going on. The entrance/office is plain, but when you enter the campground you are under huge pecan trees with green lush grass growing down to the river. About half the sites were occupied by permanent residents (the new oil boom in this part of Texas). The only way to get satellite service is to run about 100 yards of cable to get out from under the tree's canopy. We camped at Lake Wood Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.
