Right on the corner of where the Colorado River meets the Gulf of Mexico. Huge pull thru and back in sites. NO TREES or shade. Strong water pressure, solid electricity, sites have 30/50A. Nearest town is Matagorda which is 15 minutes up the road. Not much there but Stanleys General Store. Between there and here is NOTHING. First real town is Bay City which is 35 minutes away. Bay City has everything you ever need. They also have the largest ACE Hardware store in the world (there is nothing there you can't find) .. right down the street from ACE is HEB and Walmart. BOTH supercenters. Check in is easy. WIFI works strongest closet to Ranger station. I was in site 07 and was streaming NETFLIX no problem. My friend was in the northern loop and couldn't even see the signal. Clean showers, clean bathrooms. Extremely well kept landscape. Tons to do if you like fishing and crabbing and kayaking, other than that bring a good book. Picked up 63 channels on my RV antenna, mostly Houston area channels. Sites are all level and concrete. Crabbing and fishing were both good off the pier and we got allot of crab just throwing the strings with chicken necks off the ledge close to our trailer. Part of the FREE beach is easy to get to and any vehicle can get you to the water, BUT other places you need a 4x4 with large tires and a pass for $10 a year. They have VERY few lights out here at night, and it gets DARK. You can see BILLIONs of stars. We had very little mosquitoes. The park hosts do a great job keeping this place spotless. Also the female Park Ranger with the short hair will take time and tell you everything you need to know about anything you want to know. NO POOL, NO PLAYGROUND, just nature. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We have camped at the park for the last couple of years. We prefer the pull through sites because we also have a boat and the sites are long enough to accommodate both along with 2 vehicles. Although we prefer to take the boat out to fish, the park has a couple of docks to fish from or you can fish along the shore of the Colorado River which flows into the gulf. The park is quiet and an easy walk to the beach. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

This is a place to go to fish and relax. Not a lot of people like Corpus or Galveston. A good place to eat is Snappers. In Matagorda at the base of the bridge is a store that has just about everything you need but is pricey.

End of the road. While this is not a "destination park", you certainly have to be going here to get here. Nice park with surprisingly good wifi. Sites nicely spaced, concrete pads and patios. Enjoyed our time here along the gulf. Not sure we will return but that is not because of the park. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

Concrete pads, patio and picnic tables. Park is located where the Texas Colorado River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. RV park has a north and south loop with back-ins on the perimeter, and looong pull thrus in the center. Camp sites 4 thru 12 in the south loop have more yard area that other sites. Lots of campers come here to fish. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

WiFi didn't reach to our campsite, which isn't horrible, but it was inconvenient at this particular part of our journey. The sites were big and level and a short walk to the beach. It's a bit far from town which is good in one sense, but we didn't have a tow-car so we had to break camp to go anywhere- nothing within walking distance. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

Great park adjacent to Colorado River and Gulf. Would definitely stay again. About 6 miles from the town of Matagorda which is very small. Great if you like remoteness. Beach is open to driving (approx. 20 miles of beach with $10 annual permit). We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

This is a great Park within walking distance of the beach. There is also a Nature Center adjacent to the Park. There was also a $4.00 per day entrance fee per person. Site was a nice concrete slab with full hook ups. The mosquitoes were swarming at dusk. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed at Matagorda Bay for two weeks and enjoyed this campground for the remoteness and the quiet. It was nice being able to walk on the beach and to watch all the seabirds. We felt lucky to see roseate spoonbills while we were there. Staff was always helpful and the park was very clean. Not sure if it was just while we were there but the water was brown, coated our filters, and left sediment in the "house" filter base. We had to change all three (house, in-line, and Brita) filters when we left. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Because of the brown water we bought bottle water after the first day. Shopping (Bay City) was quite a distance but HEB and Walmart were well stocked. The campground is very open and and wind can be difficult at times. The rate I quote includes a per person day use fee that is charged at check-in. For full-timers, mail is only through general delivery at the Matagorda post office just before the bridge.

Overall Rating:

The park was extremely well laid out and easy to navigate. The sites were easy to back or pull into. All the connections were functional and well within reach of the coach. The space provided was large and roomy. The road around was very easy to navigate and find my spot. It is not lit well in the evenings, so bring a flashlight if you are a late check in as I was.

The local area is nice and easy get around. The drive to the beach and onto it was a unique experience. Be sure to get a beach tag for your vehicle, they are cheap.

I was there just after Hurricane Harvey and they had cleaned up pretty well in this area. The waters were still dirty looking and I suspect will be for some time as the Colorado River dumps into the Gulf at the park. It was dumping muddy water and the trash from the flood was washing right back up on the beach. No ones fault, it just was.

I don't know if the recent hurricane had an effect or not, but the water coming into my coach had a brownish color to it. Tasted fine, but after I figured it out I switched to drinking bottled water.

Side note: Bring bug spray. While there I don't know if something was different or what, but the mosquito's were ferocious. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.

Bring groceries. I like to buy where I am staying to boost the local economy, but the drive to town is long and there is not much of a town to speak of.

Tips for other Campers:

LCRA Kayak trip up the river if you get the chance. Beach is crowded and no security but it is not part of the park or LCRA. There is a day use fee for park, it is mentioned on a couple of sign up pages. People complained they were not expecting the extra cost. Somehow I understood the fee from the start. I do not like online booking but its always good to call and confirm with a real person that you have completed their process.

I would give it a 10 but most of the spaces were back-in spaces. We prefer drive thru! Otherwise this was a really nice place and very close to the beach. Got mixed up with office location, restroom and showers and never used them. The Museum staff was very helpful with most of the check-in and answering questions. We will come back and use again. They were dog friendly which helped b/c we took our dogs for the first time. It was a great time and beautiful area. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Bring groceries otherwise you will have to drive into Bay City for the nearest grocery/Walmart store. The RV park also had their own piers to fish which was great. Plentiful restroom all over, RV parks, museum and 3rd one by the larger parking lot and pier area.

Rate is for a site directly on a river flowing into the Gulf. But I don't know if that's any big deal here. All have pretty good views & for $10 less. This is an excellent well maintained campground of the first order. Don't hesitate to come here. The concrete pads are 60 to 70 foot long & seem to be absolutely level. And all sit in lush grass. Each pad has a really nice large radius extension to it 10 feet in the direction from which you back in. The pads are spaced 30 feet from each other. Each site also has a 20 x 20 concrete pad with a large concrete picnic table on it. They have some pull thru sites, too. Bring your fishing pole. It's the big thing here and easy to do right in the river while sitting in a comfortable chair. We camped at Matagorda Bay Nature Park in a Motorhome.
