Just a couple of miles of the interstate. When we got there they said to pick a site if we didn't like ours. We had a pull through, but opted for a back in because of better cell coverage and more privacy. Dogs had a great time running on the dunes. Since it was midweek very few people there. You can rent or buy things to slide down the dunes on. Very quite even though so close to the interstate. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Monahans Sandhills State Park is a Texas State Park campground in the sand dunes in the Permian Basin, next to Interstate 20. Camping in the middle of large sand dunes, some apparently as high as 70 feet is pretty special. On a windy day while here, we watched blown sand flowing in streams winding along the surface of the park roads. All the bird tracks on the dunes where erased, ready for fresh bird art. We kept our tires on the pavement and did not have any sand traction problems. The sunsets were beautiful. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a pull thru site with 50 amp electric and water in winter of 2018 in a 36' motorhome. We enjoyed our stay and would come again. Safe and Happy Travels. Tips for other Campers:

Groceries can be found 5 miles along I-20 in the city of Monahans. 30 miles east is Odessa. While staying here we visited the Petroleum Museum in Midland, which was very interesting.

Excellent State Park! Office is located near the entrance and very close to the railroad and I-8, while the campground is about a mile inland and very quiet. Sand dunes are impressive, just wish we had the time to hike the area. Very windy the day we were there and I understand this is common. The town of Monahan's is a small typical oil town, kind of dirty and rough around the edges. We did find an excellent restaurant the "Jazz Café", looks run down from the outside but a pleasant surprise inside. Good food and service. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Convenient off interstate location. Far enough off that there's no traffic noise. Hills of white sand, some with vegetation....looks like a seashore in the middle of Texas! Back in site pavement was just wide enough for us. I'm sure if wheels dropped into the sand, it would be a problem. Really quiet. We arrived after office hours but multiple available sites were posted for us to chose. We're just over nighting and would do so again. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice state park just off of I-20. Sites are over a mile back from interstate so there really isn't any road noise. Daily site fee ($19) includes $2 per person entry fee, if you have a Texas parks pass site fee would be $15. There are 26 sites about 1/2 are pull-thru the rest back in. The pull-thrus are nice if you have a toad but they are alongside the main loop road so you are not very far from daily traffic. Roads and sites are paved but off the pavement the sand can get deep and you will find yourself stuck. Parking for tow vehicle can be challenging depending on site, I dropped front wheels off pavement while parking and nearly was stuck. Each site has a picnic table, grill and shares a shade canopy. The park is one big sandbox, you can walk anywhere you want, there are no marked trails or restrictions where you can go. The park service rents disks (snow saucers) to slide down the dunes with. The dunes can be as high as a 100 feet nearly outside your door. 20-30-50 AMP service at each site with good pressure water as well, no sharing. Dump station near entrance to campground, connection is on wrong side of road/area so you need to enter in wrong direction of travel. When the wind blows it can really rock your rig but the sand really doesn't get airborne to damage your paint. It does however pile up everywhere. A patio mat will not help in many sites because the sand is so deep and soft. This was our first stay in a Texas State Park and we really enjoyed it. We'll come back. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The park is 6 miles East of town, there is nothing near the park, you are in the sticks. But that is what you want in a park like this.

Rate sighted represents camping only. If you do not have an annual parks pass there is an $8 entry fee too. Nice stop when going cross country on Interstate 20. Far enough back from the highway so it is quiet at night. Only 26 sites on a single loop, with 10 pull through and 16 back in. Pull through sites can be a little tight depending on your neighbor as they are joined front to back rather than independent sites. Electric, 30/50 amp and water only with a dump station. Bath house but I didn't use. Picnic table with sun shade provided at each site. No fire ring but elevated grill at each site. Might not be a good stop if it is very windy as the sand is fine and drifts easily. Several of the interior roads were partially covered with drifted sand. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Visitor center has some displays and a small souvineer type area. Sand discs/round sleds can be rented from the visitor center to use in sliding down and playing on the dunes. Looked like people were having fun. Several miles west into the town of Monahans.

Great park for an overnight, 50 amp, many pull thrus. Quiet, some sites not level enough for a MH but OK for a trailer or 5th. Windy the entire time we were there, sand blowing all the time. Sand is very soft so hard to walk on sand dunes. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Eat at Pappy's, brisket was very good so was the spicy sausage. There is a train graveyard in town. Not open to the public but enough is visible to make the graveyard interesting.

Texas has great state parks, and we make a point to stay here when we are passing through on I-20, and it's so restful we often stay an extra day just to enjoy the quiet. The park is unique, and worth a look online to get all the details. Kids would love it. Park rangers and/or hosts are very knowledgeable and helpful. Just a nice, low stress place to stay. Far enough from the interstate to be quiet! We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

I would have rated excellent, but there had been heavy rain overnight and the site was partially under water. The site had been closed and the park was full, but we were kindly offered the "waterfront" site if we wanted it. Just got our toad tires wet. Grateful to have a site after a long day of driving. All things considered, it was excellent after all...:)

The dunes are an amazing display of nature. Unique experience to climb and explore the dunes. One night we had an absolutely fantastic sunset!!! Visitor center is an ample space but the displays are dated and lack energy. You do not come away with much enthusiasm for the park. But, once you stay there and hike the dunes it is a great experience! Restrooms in the visitor center were out of order. One shower in the men's restroom had only cold water. Site 14 is located as you enter the camping area loop. It is on the corner of the road, very small and faces all the oncoming traffic of the camping loop. took a stroll on sand dunes. can rent "saucers" to slide down dunes, would be fun for kids. Happened to be there night of a nasty wind storm. Sand/wind not a good combo. Power went on the blink because of storm but was restored.

Price is $15 for E/W plus $4 per night if you do not have the TX state park pass. Very small park (only 24 sites) in gorgeous setting--sand dunes and desert type surroundings. Very convenient to I-20 (exit 86) but encourage you to take a good morning walk even if you are only using this as a one-night stopover. Campground is far enough from the interstate that highway noise is negligible. Park road and site spots paved (but be careful not to accidentally go off into the sand on the side as it is very soft). Mostly level. About 10 sites are pull-through and no trees to worry about overhead clearance, so probably suitable for many larger rigs. Most sites have covered shelters over the picnic tables. Grills. No fire rings. Verizon signal good. Some over-the-air TV available. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Motorhome.

For a nominal fee you can rent a sand sled from the park office and spend time flying down the dunes. Even if you don't choose to go sand-sleighing, this is a beautiful park in a magical setting, especially in the early morning hours.

Unique landscape: I had no idea there were sand dunes in West Texas and that alone made this park worth the stop. Although there was no shade and no privacy between sites, we really enjoyed this two night stop on our way to Arizona. The bathrooms were not terribly clean, but there are free showers available. Site 2 was level and we liked having a pull through. Distant highway sounds and distant train sounds were comforting and not disturbing at all. I'll make a note that it would be a great lunch stop off of Highway 20, even if we can't camp here. We purchased a Texas State Park Pass due to the number of times we pass through, but for those who don't have one, you can still use the Visitor Center and the Nature Walk free of charge if you're just passing through. We will definitely camp here again. We camped at Monahans Sandhills State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Arrived after office was closed (4:30 pm) so selected a site and self checked in. Sites are narrow but can accommodate big rigs with slides if you park so that hookups are between your slides. Park host on site was helpful in getting settled. Daily fee of $4 per person in addition to the very reasonable camping fee so total was $23. Neat dunes. No wind on our overnight stay but would question camping here if it was windy due to blowing sand. Hookups of electricity and water on same pedestal and worked well. Sites are reasonably level. Dump station fee is $2 but don't know if that applies if you pay for camping. Very quiet at night. Park was about 80% full over night. Good stop for overnight.
